As Bonnie listened to Sanqi recount the ghost stories he had heard about, as well as the incidents that had occurred in other families, Bonnie's premonition grew stronger. Perhaps this really was the work of the man who had lost his wife and child.
After Liu Jiu and the others returned, San Qi stopped talking about these things; he felt they were a bit unlucky. His sister and brother had only six months left until their college entrance exams, so he figured it was better to believe it than not.
That night, Bonnie lay in bed and talked to Gu Ye about it.
"Gu Ye, do you think it's possible that this man did these things?"
Bonnie still felt that her idea was correct, but she had no evidence.
"What does it matter whether it is true or not? They love to gossip so much, yet they don't think they've done anything wrong. Now, the same rumors are falling on them; they must be feeling terrible."
Gu Ye has an extreme gene for revenge, a desire for an eye for an eye and a blood for a blood. It was only after years of being educated by the military, guided by his older brother, and later meeting Bao Ni, that he was able to control the beast within him.
"That's true. People never learn until they experience the pain themselves. But why do you think that man did that? Was it because he loved his wife very much or because he felt guilty?"
Bonnie didn't understand. She had heard some of the details, but the young woman named Qu Jing had gone dancing with her husband, Lin Qiang. However, after the incident, her in-laws, neighbors, and colleagues all blamed her and gossiped about her.
"You must feel guilty. Didn't you say it was a man taking his wife dancing? As a man and a woman's husband, he didn't fulfill his responsibilities as a husband and didn't protect his wife. He must feel guilty."
Gu Ye analyzed the matter from a man's perspective: if it were because of love, he wouldn't have done these little things. It was clearly out of guilt that he would occasionally make a fuss to make others uncomfortable in order to make himself feel better.
Bonnie and Gu Ye were bystanders in this matter and didn't pay much attention to it. After hearing about it, they stopped following it.
After school let out for break, Sanqi and the others were busy learning foreign languages and reviewing their lessons, so they didn't go to that residential compound anymore. Baoni didn't know how the ghost story was resolved.
When the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve 1981, Bonnie did a quick mental calculation and realized she had been in this world for sixteen or seventeen years.
When she first woke up, she was only nineteen years old; now she's thirty-five or thirty-six, practically thirty-nine. Sometimes she has a lingering feeling that she is Lin Baoni, because her memories of Jiang Jiaojiao are becoming increasingly hazy.
It's often said that the human brain is like a memory card; if it stores too much information, it will automatically delete some. For the past ten years or so, she has been living her life earnestly, creating countless memories.
“Peng Peng…”
The sound of fireworks and firecrackers outside the window pulled Bonnie back to reality; she had been lost in thought.
"Mom, let's go watch the fireworks. There are people setting off fireworks at the training ground. It seems like someone's son made a lot of money and bought them to show everyone."
Sanqi came in and called his parents, a rare opportunity.
"Okay, your dad and I will be there right away, you go ahead."
Bonnie went to the study to call Gu Ye. After dinner, with nothing else to do, he was reading a novel. It was a martial arts novel by Mr. Jin Yong, which someone had brought from Hong Kong. He was completely engrossed in it.
"Brother Ye, our son is calling us to go see the fireworks. Please come back from the world of Linghu Chong."
"They're back, they're back."
Gu Ye put down the book. Although he loved the world of martial arts, the real world with Bao Ni and his children was the most authentic.
Under the cover of night, Gu Ye held Bao Ni's hand, feeling that Linghu Chong's life lacked his own happiness.
"Who bought the fireworks? They must have been expensive!"
"I don't know. Sanqi said it was bought by some rich kid to show everyone."
It wasn't specified whose it was.
"After the reform and opening up, a group of people got rich first."
Gu Ye often communicated with his older brother and knew that the economy in the south was developing rapidly and that the gap between the rich and poor would widen in the future.
Like fireworks bursting overhead, behind their dazzling beauty, there are also some different things.
After watching the fireworks and visiting relatives, the New Year celebrations are over, and Sister Xiang is coming back soon.
"Bonnie, Bonnie, something's happened again."
Sister Xiang came in looking flustered, her legs almost trembling.
"Sister Xiang, have some water, tell me slowly, what's wrong?"
"When I came over just now, a lot of people were running towards the staff quarters of the food factory not far away, saying that someone had died. How could something like this happen during the Chinese New Year?"
Sister Xiang recalled that on this same day last year, a young woman slit her own throat, resulting in the deaths of herself and her unborn child.
"Oh, Sister Xiang, you rest for a bit, I'll go check. Sanqi went to the food factory's residential compound to visit her classmate."
Bonnie changed her clothes and went outside. He was afraid of scaring Sanqi, who was only thirteen years old, no matter how clever she was usually.
Following the flow of people, Bonnie arrived at the food factory's residential compound once again, and this time the situation was even worse than before.
Four or five men, some old and some young, lay sprawled in the courtyard, their throats slit. Lin Qiang was gone; he had reportedly been taken away by the police.
A group of relatives, men, women, and children, threw themselves on the body or surrounded it, wailing and cursing Lin Qiang and the Lin family.
"You know what? Lin Qiang said that all of the dead men had harassed his wife back then. Everyone said that Qu Jing was immoral and promiscuous, which attracted some bachelors and shady men in the factory to harass her."
"Yes, because we always see these people entangled with Qu Jing, some people say that the child she is carrying is not Lin Qiang's."
"Alas, rumors can be harmful!"
