The day after Sister-in-law Gu finished talking to Bao Ni, they moved to the courtyard house. Even Gu Xuanhao moved there, because he couldn't disturb his older brother and sister's studies.
The Shen family also knew that Shen Jiaqi had returned. They had only met briefly at the funeral of Old Madam Gu before, and hadn't said much.
So, they heard they moved to a courtyard house, so the elderly couple from the Shen family took a car to go and visit. Their daughter hasn't been back for a long time, and they miss her quite a bit.
"Mom and Dad, what brings you here?"
When Sister-in-law Gu heard the knocking, she was quite surprised. Who would come? Bao Ni and the others didn't live here, so no one should be coming to look for them.
"I heard you moved here, and I thought it's been a long time since we've seen each other, so I wanted to chat with you. Why don't you stay in the military compound? If there's not enough room at Gu Ye's place, you can stay at home. Your dad and I have plenty of space."
Mother Shen held Sister-in-law Gu's hand and spoke intimately, but she could no longer find the feeling from before. She didn't know when or what had happened that had caused them to drift apart.
“Mom, no need. Gu Ze is back for a meeting, but it just so happens that Grandma passed away. He’s been incredibly busy all day, and it’s inconvenient for him to stay in the compound. Bao Ni’s house has everything she needs, and it’s perfect for her.”
Sister-in-law Shen can no longer tell whether her parents' concern for her is genuine, that they truly care about their daughter, or whether they want to influence Gu Ze through her and gain benefits for the men of the Shen family in the future.
"Whatever is convenient for you. Your mother and I just came to see you, that's all."
Mr. Shen saw the struggle in his daughter's eyes, and he felt helpless too; his son and grandson were disappointing. However, he had come to terms with it now; children and grandchildren have their own destinies, and it wasn't something he could solve by getting anxious and upset.
"Mom and Dad, please have a seat."
Sister-in-law Gu didn't respond. Even if something really happened, she couldn't help. Besides, Gu Ze wouldn't listen to her anyway.
"Bonnie's yard is very tidy, and the house doesn't look dilapidated at all. How's yours? Is there any leakage?"
Chen's mother knew that Bao Ni grew vegetables and raised fish in the courtyard house, and Xuan Yi would occasionally give them some, saying that his second aunt grew them herself.
"No, everything is fine. Bonnie is very attentive; she regularly checks and ventilates the house, taking better care of it than we do."
After Sister-in-law Gu moved in, I went to take a look. Honestly, it didn't look like anyone had lived there for over ten years. A house with people around won't deteriorate so badly.
"Yes, Gu Ye and his wife really put their hearts into it. Xuan Yi and Xuan Yu are being taken very well. Even if we were to take care of them, we might not be able to do it as well as they have."
Shen's father knew everything and saw it all. The two children were growing up well, much better than their own grandchildren.
"My older brother's younger child is still taking the exam. What year is it this year?"
Sister-in-law Gu thought of her eldest brother's youngest son, who was a few years older than Xuan Yi and had repeated a grade several times.
“He’s not taking the exam anymore. After failing last year, your older brother asked him about it, and he gave up on it. Now he’s learning to repair cars from a master, and he really enjoys it.”
Thinking of his second grandson, Mr. Shen looked helpless. The child was quite good, but he just couldn't learn. His mother wouldn't give up and wanted him to go to university, which almost drove the child crazy.
"It's all her fault for messing things up. She almost turned a perfectly good child into a mentally challenged one. Only when your older brother got angry did she stop. She's always comparing herself to others, and she hasn't taught any of her three children properly."
Mother Shen complained that she had made a mistake in marrying her daughter-in-law.
"Stop nagging. Jiaqi has finally come back. Let's talk about something happy."
Mr. Shen stopped his wife from nagging, saying, "What's the use of complaining?"
"What about my second brother's two kids? They must be in high school by now, right?"
Listening to her mother's complaints about her sister-in-law, Sister-in-law Gu suddenly realized how rare it was that she and Bao Ni had such a good relationship!
It is often said that mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law are natural enemies, and sisters-in-law are adversaries, but this is not entirely true.
"Your second brother's eldest son is in his first year of high school and will take the entrance exam next year. His grades are decent, but he won't get into a top university. He should be able to get into a regular one if nothing unexpected happens. The younger one is only in junior high school. Her grades aren't as good as her brother's. She's too playful."
Mr. Shen was quite satisfied with his second son's two children, as they were well-behaved.
Sister-in-law Gu told her parents about their situation. They didn't make any other requests, and the conversation was fairly pleasant. When she took them home, she carried the gifts she had bought for them. Seeing her parents walking with difficulty, she felt a pang of sadness.
Brother Gu and his wife were very busy when they came back.
Sister-in-law Gu was busy visiting relatives and friends, and she was so busy that she didn't even go back to the compound many times.
After Gu Xuanyi and his classmates finished filling out their college applications, it was time for the couple to set off back home.
"Xuanyi, don't be nervous during the exam. Just let it happen naturally. If it doesn't work out, we can take it again next year."
Looking at her second son, who was even taller than herself, Sister-in-law Gu thought to herself, "Time really flies."
"Listen to your second uncle and aunt, let us know when the results come out."
Gu Ze didn't say much; he had already said everything he needed to say.
"Xuanyu, you should go for an internship during the summer vacation. I've already spoken to them. You have the academic qualifications, but you also need to value practical experience. Be humble, learn more, and remember that no one who has been in the workplace for so many years has done it for nothing."
Gu Xuanyu will graduate with a master's degree in a year and needs to gain some practical experience.
"I understand, I will. Take care of yourselves, especially Xuanhao. Don't wander around. It's not very safe right now."
Gu Xuanyu was also aware of the current situation. He knew from newspapers, radio broadcasts, and the gossip of his aunts and grandmothers that the public security was not very good.
"Big brother, sister-in-law, Xuanhao, goodbye, have a safe journey!"
