The children have all started school one after another, and Cao Wenze and his wife are about to leave.
"Gu Ye, Bao Ni, I'm entrusting my Sheng Nan to your care."
Cao Wenze felt a pang of sadness. His daughter had grown up and taken the first step away from her parents.
"Brother Wenze, sister-in-law, don't worry, we'll take care of the children. When they're on holiday, let her come over. It'll be good for the kids to have each other's company and keep them company."
Gu Ye put it bluntly: Liu Jiu and Sheng Nan are both from the military system, and they might end up working together in the future.
"I understand. The children have grown up, and we have grown old."
Cao Wenze is three years older than Gu Ye, and he feels this deeply.
"Bonnie, I'll need your help with a lot of things, especially things related to girls."
Staff Officer Deng was raised as a boy from a young age and lived a rather rough life. She hoped that her daughter would not be like her and bear too much burden.
"Officer Deng, what's our relationship? I call you sister or sister-in-law, but I'm just used to calling you Officer Deng. Don't worry, the kids are all good kids, we don't need to worry about them too much. I'll keep an eye on them too. My cousin from my uncle's family is also from the military medical university. He's a year ahead of Shengnan, so he'll take care of her at school."
Bonnie has already spoken to Raymond Lam, and they have met.
"Okay, then I'll leave everything to you."
Cao Wenze and his family of four got into the car. After this parting, who knows how many years it will be before they meet again.
Bonnie and Gu Ye went home together. They had been to this train station countless times, welcoming relatives and friends from afar and seeing off departing friends. It was truly the best place to witness joys and sorrows.
The children are growing up and slowly leaving home, and in the end, only the couple is left.
"Bonnie, you guys are starting work tomorrow too. Sanqi is a junior high student now. Time flies."
"Why think so much? Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow, life always moves forward. The most important thing is to live each day to the fullest."
"What should we eat tonight? It's just the four of us left. How about we make dumplings?"
Bonnie felt that her boyfriend was becoming more and more sentimental. He was getting older, so why was he becoming so melancholic?
"Let's make some vegetarian fillings. Thinking about my daughter, she'll be exposed to the wind and sun every day from now on, and I don't even find meat appealing anymore."
"So dramatic!"
Bonnie ignored the man who might be going through premature menopause; she was a carnivore.
Gu Ye went into his study. He needed some peace and quiet. His daughter was sixteen years old. In ten years at most, she would become someone else's wife and daughter-in-law, and she would really have to leave home. Just thinking about it made him feel sad.
The compound suddenly became much quieter. Those who had passed the university entrance exams went to work, and those who hadn't were given alternative paths by their families—some joined the army, others went to factories. Only a few became idle loafers, some even trying to use their fathers' power to gain personal benefits and advantages.
There are also some families whose children are in high school, and they are extremely anxious to see their children get into such good universities.
"Liang Yuan, what are you going to do again? School starts tomorrow, have you finished your homework?"
When Chief of Staff Liang returned home from get off work, he saw his youngest daughter dressed up beautifully and getting ready to go out.
"Dad, I'm going out for a walk."
Liang Yuan didn't expect that her father would come home so just in time today.
"I asked you if you've finished your homework and all your workbook exercises. You'll be a junior in high school soon, and the college entrance exam is just around the corner. Are you confident you can get into university?"
Liang Yuan shuffled her feet along the ground, head bowed, silent. There was no hope of getting into university. She could have gotten into her own high school through connections, but her father had pulled strings to get her in. With her grades, she wouldn't even have passed the preliminary exams.
"What's wrong, Liang Yuan? Where are you going?"
"Where are you going? Go out and have some fun. Why don't you have this kind of drive for studying? Look at the Gu family's kids, one in the Air Force Command Academy, the other in Tsinghua University. Aren't you worried?"
Chief of Staff Liang was also very disappointed in his children, and the family did everything they could to support their studies. They hired tutors, bought practice materials, and prepared all sorts of delicious meals... but it was all in vain. Liang Qi was doing a little better, with grades in the middle to upper range, but Liang Yuan was practically at the bottom of the class.
"Dad, my grades are just so-so, getting angry won't help. I definitely won't get into university."
Liang Yuan was going all out; she kept comparing herself to Gu Yun Chu, but what was there to compare?
"You still have the nerve to talk back? What do you want to do if you don't get into university? Do you want to work in a factory or set up a stall to make money? How will you support yourself in the future? In a few years, when it's time to find a partner, which family with better conditions would agree to let someone who doesn't even have a job into their home?"
Chief of Staff Liang was also worried. When his daughter was little, she always said she liked Ma Zijun, which was fine. But Ma Zijun got into university, and the gap between them widened. How could he possibly be interested in Yuanyuan?
"Dad, please arrange for me to be a member of the performing arts troupe. I'll become an actress and wear beautiful clothes every day. It'll be so pretty."
Liang Yuan wants to be an actress now, but she can't get into professional acting schools, so she can only take the path of becoming a member of a performing arts troupe. Once she joins the troupe, she will have the opportunity to work in film crews in the future.
"Why can't you be down-to-earth and join the performing arts troupe? Can you sing or dance? What makes you think you can get into the troupe? How much power does your father have to satisfy all your demands?"
Chief of Staff Liang looked at Liang Yuan, who seemed to take it all for granted, and felt a pang of heartache. What good thing had he done to deserve such a daughter in his life?
"Alright, Liang Yuan, go back upstairs and study. Whether you can get into university or not, you have to try your best. There's still a year left, how can you give up now?"
Liang's mother gave her daughter a wink, signaling her to hurry upstairs.
