Bao Ni gradually got used to Gu Ye's absence.
The hardest part was the food. Bonnie had had enough of the cafeteria food, and stubbornly tried making it herself twice more, but she just couldn't swallow it. Even though she added salt, it somehow turned out sweet.
After Bonnie made several trips up the mountain and down to the sea, Gu Ye finally returned home.
"Gu Ye, you're back?"
"What happened? Why have you lost weight?" Gu Ye picked up Bao Ni and cushioned her weight; she had lost four or five pounds.
"Are you calling yourself a pig? How disgusting!"
"I just wanted to make sure I wasn't seeing things. Wait, how come I've lost four or five pounds in just a few days?!"
Gu Ye had a cold face as he told lame jokes.
"Brother Ye, you're overthinking it. I'm just hungry. I've had enough of the cafeteria food, and the food I cook myself still tastes so weird!"
"Are you stupid? Then go home and ask your grandma to cook for you!"
When Gu Ye left, he told Bao Ni to go back to her parents' home to visit her grandmother whenever she had time, because he was worried that she wasn't eating well. In the end, she still lost weight.
“I’ve gone back a few times, but I can’t go back to my parents’ house for meals every day. It would be bad for you.”
"What impact could it have on me? You're overthinking it. Don't be so silly next time. It would break my heart if you starved yourself to death."
Gu Ye's cheesy pickup lines gave Bao Ni goosebumps; they were terrifying.
Have you eaten? Are you going to the military base today?
After rambling on about a bunch of useless gossip, Bonnie finally remembered to care about Gu Ye.
"We've already eaten. We ate together in the canteen. Now we need to wash up and take a nap. We didn't sleep very well on the ship."
Gu Ye can maintain a high level of concentration for several days without sleeping, and it doesn't affect his work. So far, he has never slept as soundly as when he sleeps next to Bao Ni.
After Gu Ye fell asleep, Bonnie carried her basket to her secret base.
When Bonnie came last time, she was pleasantly surprised to find that there were many seaweed seedlings in this area.
Bonnie remembers that wild kelp has very high requirements for water quality.
Her seaweed farming has taken another step forward.
Today, Bonnie didn't care about any of that; she needed to get Gu Ye something nutritious to help him recover. Gu Ye had lost far more weight than Bonnie after that trip to sea.
Nothing had changed at the secret base. Bonnie quickly scooped up the sea cucumbers, and then the abalone arrived. Even when it comes to nourishing the body, it should be done gradually; one shouldn't overdo it.
When they got home, Gu Ye was still asleep.
Bonnie took the abalone and rice and went out again. She was going to find Grandma to make some abalone porridge for Gu Ye to soothe his stomach.
"Bonnie, you're back. I haven't seen you for days."
When the neighbor's grandma saw Bonnie coming over, her face crinkled with smiles.
"Grandma Huang, have you eaten yet?"
"I've already eaten. What time is it? Haven't you eaten yet?"
"I've eaten too. I have something to do with Grandma when I got back, so I'll talk to you later."
Bonnie pushed the stroller into the hospital.
"You ran into Grandma Huang from next door again. Did she pull you aside to talk?" Grandma said confidently as she took the basket from Bonnie.
"Yes, Grandma Huang is so enthusiastic, she still loves chatting with people."
"Grandma, Gu Ye is back. He's lost a lot of weight. I got some abalone. Could you make him some abalone porridge?"
Bonnie took out rice and abalone; she took quite a lot, also to nourish her grandparents.
"Why did you take so much? You two are ruining your life. Be more careful in the future. A little kindness is appreciated, but too much will only breed resentment. Be more mindful."
Grandma knows that Bonnie is generous and takes good care of her family, but everyone has a bad side, and she's afraid that she might develop bad intentions in the future and hurt the relationship between the siblings. This is what Grandpa Lin said.
"I know, Grandma, I'll be careful. I was just thinking that Grandpa and you could have some too."
Grandma was cooking abalone congee in the kitchen, while Bonnie was helping out with odd jobs in the yard. She chopped some firewood and carried several buckets of water.
Grandma not only cooked abalone porridge, but also made several side dishes. When you're at sea for a long time, you need to eat more vegetables. I can't explain the scientific reasons behind it, but it's the wisdom of life.
"Grandma, you even made some side dishes. Gu Ye is in for a treat."
"Alright, take it back quickly. There are also these pancakes; roll them up with scallions and eat them."
Bonnie picked up her basket, told her grandmother, and went home.
"It smells so good!"
"You're awake. Why didn't you sleep a little longer?"
I'm hungry.
"Come here quickly, I asked Grandma to make some abalone porridge. Have some to soothe your stomach." Bonnie took the earthenware pot out of the basket. It was so hot that Bonnie quickly put it down and rubbed her ears with both hands.
"Did you get burned?"
Gu Ye rushed over and checked Bao Ni's hands; they were all red. He pulled her to the kitchen and soaked them in cold water for a while.
"Okay, it's alright now."
Gu Ye helplessly ruffled Bonnie's hair. Honestly, he couldn't bring himself to say anything to criticize her.
Grandma's abalone porridge was quite delicious. Gu Ye ate a pancake roll with scallions, which awakened his taste buds. The two of them finished off all the food on the table, with Gu Ye being the main eater.
After a day of rest, Gu Ye went back to work.
"You, your clothes?"
Bonnie was stunned for a long time when she saw Gu Ye in his gray military uniform.
Although she knew the uniforms were going to change, she didn't expect it to happen so soon. As Bonnie saw, the Type 65 naval uniforms were all ship gray, with no longer any distinction between ranks or the subtle differences between men's and women's uniforms.
Everyone in the navy wore a liberation cap, with a red five-pointed star cap badge and all-red collar tabs. Officers and enlisted men wore cloth uniforms, the only distinguishing feature being the number of pockets.
"Not used to it? Don't like it?"
