Bonnie left the island, saying goodbye to her parents. She felt reluctant and worried, but there was nothing she could do. In middle age, she had elderly parents to care for, young children to raise, and a job to do. She didn't want to give up any of them, but very few people can truly manage everything perfectly.
Fortunately, her parents promised to come to Beijing next year and live with her for a few years, then things will be much better.
After getting off the ship, I boarded the train, which rattled all the way. By the time I got off, I was completely exhausted.
"Wife, Bonnie, over here!"
Gu Ye knew his wife was coming back today, so he went to great lengths to come and pick her up from the station.
Bonnie has been gone for over a month, and he's been very busy, hardly ever going home. He only manages to visit Sanqi every now and then. Fortunately, his son is very independent and can take care of himself.
"How come you have time to pick me up? Aren't you busy?"
Bonnie handed the things to Gu Ye, looking quite puzzled.
"There's no time to finish things, I just missed you and wanted to see you as soon as possible. But, honey, you seem to have gained a little weight, don't you miss me?"
Gu Ye felt quite aggrieved. He missed his wife so much that he couldn't eat or sleep well and even lost weight.
"I miss you. Because I miss you, when I eat something delicious, I think about eating your portion too, so I've gained weight."
"Really? I feel like you're kidding me."
Gu Ye looked incredulous; he had never heard of someone missing another person being able to eat so much.
"Haha...Alright, we're an old married couple, stop being so mushy. If Sanqi hears this, he'll have something to say."
"Who cares? That brat is never as considerate as a daughter. When has Liu Jiu ever said anything like that? By the way, how are Mom and Dad? Did they agree to come to Beijing next year?"
Gu Ye felt an itch to slap him just thinking about it. This was his own son; otherwise, he would have already done it.
“My parents are doing well. At first, I was very sad and it was hard to get used to. Especially my mother, who lived with my grandmother for more than 30 years, spending every day with her. It was heartbreaking to see her gone all of a sudden.”
Things got better later, though; what else could we do? Life has to go on. My parents said they'd come over after the New Year; they want to live with me for a few years.
My mother said that since we were transferred away from the island over the past ten years, we've rarely seen each other. Even when we do meet, it's always a brief visit. She wants to spend more time with me while she's still healthy.
Bonnie knew that her parents would eventually return to the island, their roots, their final resting place. Like her grandparents, even at nearly ninety, the place they wanted to go to in the end was still the Lin family's ancestral cemetery.
"I really thank my parents, but I also feel a little sorry for them for taking away their beloved daughter."
Gu Ye knew that Bao Ni had always lived on an island, where she loved it and was very dependent on her parents. These past few years, following him around had been tough on her.
“You know that, right? It’s okay, your parents love you too. They can come next year. I’ve also invited my third uncle and aunt to come and visit for a few days. Their generation has a special attachment to the capital and to watching the flag-raising ceremony.”
“Come on, there’s enough room at home. If you feel it’s inconvenient, you can go to the courtyard house, it’s not far. Besides, your uncle’s family is here too, so you won’t feel lonely.”
Bonnie and Gu Ye talked about what had happened in the past month, and she also asked about the children. They were all fine and there was nothing wrong, so she was relieved.
If her child hadn't become independent, she wouldn't have felt comfortable leaving her 14-year-old child alone at home.
"Is Sister Xiang back?"
"I'm back."
Gu Ye sensed that Sister Xiang seemed to have something on her mind; she had been preoccupied ever since she returned from her break.
"Thanks to my children being so easy to take care of, otherwise I wouldn't have dared to leave for so many days. My parents probably considered this as well, which is why they readily agreed to let me live in Beijing for a few years."
They knew that the studies at Sanqi would become increasingly demanding, and I wouldn't have many opportunities to return to the island. I wouldn't feel at ease if I didn't go back, which is why my father agreed so readily.
Bonnie's parents understood everything. They felt that it was better for them to come over themselves than for their daughter to worry about them.
Before the car entered the residential compound, Gu Ye had to go back to work.
"I'm going home now. Are you coming back tonight?"
"I'm not going home tonight. You get a good night's sleep. I'll go home tomorrow. It's been so long, you may not miss me, but I have missed you terribly. Wait for me at home."
Gu Ye gave Bao Ni a meaningful look and drove away.
Bonnie felt that her brother Ye was becoming more and more improper as he got older. Honestly, the reserved Gu Ye of the past was gone forever.
"Bonnie, you're back?"
Sister Xiang was tidying up the vegetable garden in the yard. The vegetables they had planted had grown quite tall, and some of them needed trellises.
"Sister Xiang, I'm back. Thank you for your hard work these past few days."
"What's so hard about it? It's just the two of us, Sanqi and I, there's not much we can do. How are your parents? Are they in good health?"
"It's not bad, it's just that I wasn't used to it at first. I stayed home with them for a while, and I'm much better now."
Bonnie had been sitting in the car for several days and wasn't feeling well. She told Sister Xiang and went inside to get a change of clothes and take a shower first.
As Sister Xiang watched Bonnie go inside, she swallowed the words she wanted to say. She decided to wait until Bonnie came out before speaking, and there was no rush.
"Bonnie, I made braised noodles."
"Okay, I'm hungry, I'll eat a little and have it with Sanqi tonight."
Bonnie finished showering, dried her hair, and came out.
"Sister Xiang, you should eat something too."
"I'm not hungry. I had stir-fried bok choy for lunch, so I'm not hungry now."
