Although Bonnie was quite surprised when her older sister left, she didn't panic.
Bonnie hasn't decided yet whether she needs to hire another cook for the family.
The main reason is that there aren't many people eating at home now. Liu Jiu and Xuan Yi live at school, Xuan Yu went to work in another city, so it's just Gu Ye, San Qi, and herself. Most importantly, her uncle's restaurant is nearby, which makes things much more convenient for her.
Another point is that if the person we find isn't to our liking, it's better not to find anyone at all. They'll discuss it together when Gu Ye comes back tomorrow night.
Bonnie called the island brigade headquarters to let her parents know that she had arrived home safely.
Bonnie took a nap and woke up quite late. She went to the school gate to pick up Sanqi after school, and then they went to her uncle's restaurant for dinner.
"Ring...ring..."
Bonnie heard the bell ring; Sanqi and the others should be coming out soon.
Before long, the sounds of children playing and talking came from inside the schoolyard, a lively and energetic atmosphere.
"Gu Xuanming, over here."
"Mom, you're back!"
Sanqi never expected to hear his mother's voice as soon as he stepped out of the school gate.
"You arrived today. How are you doing at home? Have you missed me?"
“I’ve been thinking about it. It’s the first time I’ve been separated from my mom for so long, and I’m not used to it. Let me tell you, my dad basically doesn’t come home when you’re not around. He doesn’t even remember that he has a minor son living alone at home.”
Sanqi walked close to his mother, not forgetting to badmouth his father.
"Really? Commander Gu went too far. No, when he gets back, I have to give him a good talking to. How could he treat my son like that?"
"No need to question me, just keep this in mind. Otherwise, my dad will think I'm clueless again."
Sanqi pretended to be aggrieved; he genuinely missed his mother. It was the first time in his life he'd been separated from her for so long, and he felt uneasy.
"Alright then, for your sake, I'll forgive Commander Gu this once."
Bonnie listened to Sanqi; she sensed that her son missed her. Sanqi usually acted like a serious old man, but he was only fourteen years old—still a child.
"By the way, Mom, why are we eating at Master's place? Where is Aunt Xiang?"
"Aunt Xiang has some family matters to attend to and will no longer be working for us."
Sanqi never expected such a thing to happen. Will their family need to hire others from now on?
"What, are you worried that I'll still need you to cook in the future?"
"No, I was just wondering if we'll still need to hire someone to cook for us in the future?"
"So, do you think it's necessary?"
Bonnie consulted Sanqi to see what the child thought.
“I don’t think we need to find someone. It’s just the three of us eating at home, and my dad is often busy and doesn’t come home for meals. So it’s just the two of us, and we eat lunch at school anyway, so there’s no need to find someone to come back.”
What if we run into someone unsuitable? Wouldn't that be even more upsetting? Besides, my great-uncle's restaurant is here; the money he has for hiring staff is enough to run the restaurant, and it saves us the inconvenience of having outsiders at home.
Sanqi expressed his opinion, saying that he didn't want outsiders coming and going in his house.
"Then we won't invite them. The main issue is that after the New Year, when Grandma and the others come over, they'll feel uncomfortable if there are outsiders in the house."
Bonnie then thought that when her parents came, they would feel uncomfortable seeing that someone was hired to cook for them. She decided to move the study on the first floor to the second floor and clean out the room for her parents to live in.
Gu Ye doesn't usually use the study. Besides, their room is big enough to put the desk in the room.
The mother and daughter arrived at the uncle's restaurant while talking, and when they looked inside, they saw that there were quite a lot of people.
"Bonnie, you're back?"
The aunt was settling the bill for the guests when she saw Bonnie come in, and she was quite surprised.
"I'm back today. Auntie, you go ahead with your work. I'm going to the back."
"Go ahead, your uncle and Lin Nan are both here."
The aunt didn't need to call out to Bonnie; she could just let her go to the back by herself.
"Uncle, you're quite busy, aren't you?"
"Bonnie, you're back. When did you arrive?"
My uncle was tossing the food in the wok, and the flames were roaring.
"Sanqi, go to the main room first, Mom and Grandpa will talk for a while."
"Okay, I'll go read a book first."
Sanqi carried her schoolbag toward the main room, and Lin Nan quickly called out, "Sanqi, here are some freshly made meat pies. Take two and have some first. There are apples on the table in the main room, washed and ready to eat. Help yourself."
Lin Nan handed Sanqi a plate containing two freshly baked pies.
Sanqi took it and went to the main room as if she knew the way well.
Bonnie told her uncle about the island, how her grandparents spent their first seven days, second seven days, and third seven days after their deaths, and about the condition of her parents and third uncle. She told him a lot to put his mind at ease.
My uncle is very busy. After Bonnie finished eating, the two of them went home. We'll chat again when we have time.
The next day, Bonnie didn't go to work. Instead, she went to the courtyard house to check on the vegetable garden, set up all the scaffolding that needed to be erected, and also looked at the fishpond. By the time she finished everything, it was already noon.
Teacher Zhai went to a sanatorium and rarely comes back. Bao Ni helps take care of the house and opens the windows to let in fresh air from time to time.
Gu Ye returned home early that evening. Knowing that Sister Xiang had left, he went to the market with Bao Ni to buy groceries, and he cooked dinner.
"It's fine if we don't hire anyone. That way we can go to the market together, cook together, and I still prefer the old way of life."
Gu Ye didn't actually like having outsiders in his home, but he had no choice during those years.
"Okay, from now on we'll cook for ourselves when we have time, and eat at Uncle's when we don't."
Bonnie also enjoys cooking with Gu Ye; she feels the atmosphere of home is better that way.
After buying groceries, the two went home together and cooked together in the kitchen. When Sanqi came back, she felt really good to see her parents busy in the kitchen.
That night, Gu Ye showed his longing to Bao Ni, which made Bao Ni so angry that she pinched him hard, since she had to go to work the next day.
In the morning, Gu Ye made breakfast. Sanqi came back from her morning exercise, but her mother hadn't gotten up yet.
Bonnie brought a lot of seafood to school; she had taken such a long leave of absence, so she had to express her gratitude.
"Oh, Bonnie, you're too kind. We feel uneasy about having sea cucumber and abalone."
Teacher Ma was a little embarrassed, because these seafood items weren't cheap.
“Yes, Bonnie, you have too much, it’s too expensive.”
Teacher Liang was too embarrassed to accept it, and it was normal for Bao Ni to have to take leave.
“You don’t need to feel burdened. My family is from an island. We picked these ourselves while beachcombing, we didn’t buy them. We cleaned and dried them ourselves, they are all local specialties from our hometown.”
Bonnie's sea cucumbers and abalone, which she retrieved from the secret base, haven't been dried yet. Her dad will send them to her once they're ready.
"Then we'll accept it without hesitation. Thank you, Bonnie."
Teacher Ma and the others were quite happy. Although they had found it while beachcombing, it wasn't easy to bring it back from so far away. If they had bought it themselves, it would have cost a lot of money, and they wouldn't have been willing to buy so much.
Anyway, Bonnie gave the gift, and both the giver and receiver were happy, so it was all worth it!
