On New Year's Eve, Bonnie cooked dumplings herself while Gu Ye went to visit troops.
She's been here for twenty years, and this is the first time she's spent the Lunar New Year so quietly and alone. She's really not used to it.
The children called this morning; they're doing well there, and Xuanyu has gone too. They'll be heading back after the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, so she shouldn't worry.
Gu Yeren didn't come back, and there was no phone call. Bao Ni felt a pang of sadness.
Habits are a terrible thing. Back then, I felt that we were always arguing, so I preferred to be alone.
Finally, it was eight o'clock, and Bonnie quickly turned on the TV to watch the Spring Festival Gala.
A pile of snacks was laid out on the coffee table. Bonnie ate snacks while watching TV, and slowly, she forgot about her loneliness.
"The bell is about to ring; 1984 is almost over."
Bonnie checked the time; there were still ten minutes left before the year was over.
"Wife, I'm home."
"Gu Ye, you, why are you back? Weren't you supposed to be in the army?"
"After we finish eating the dumplings, I'll head back home. I can't let you spend the New Year alone at home."
Bonnie stopped watching TV, rushed over, and hugged her brother.
"Come on, get dressed, I'll take you to set off fireworks."
Gu Ye had prepared in advance without telling anyone, in case of an emergency and he was unable to fulfill his promise.
"Wait me a moment."
Bonnie rushed into the bedroom to change her clothes, and then rushed out again a short while later.
"Let's go, I'm all changed."
"Let's go set off fireworks."
Gu Ye held Bao Ni's hand as he set up the fireworks in the courtyard.
"Bang bang..."
Bonnie watched the fireworks burst above her head and thought that the fireworks at this moment were more magnificent and colorful than those decades later.
