After the National Day holiday, Gu Ye was able to catch his breath and wasn't so busy anymore.
Bonnie and her friends, along with their parents, have finished harvesting the autumn vegetables in the courtyard. There was a light frost yesterday, just enough time to harvest the vegetables.
Liu Jiu didn't come back, so Bao Ni was in charge of chopping cabbages to make sauerkraut. Gu Ye was in charge of uprooting them.
He'll save them for winter so they can be eaten fresh. Pulling radishes is something he's enjoyed doing since he was a child.
Bonnie's parents moved a small stool and sat down to crack perilla seeds, intending to use them for steaming buns. They had planted a row of them, and they were growing quite well.
The family worked enthusiastically, and bursts of laughter could be heard from time to time.
We were busy until three or four in the afternoon before we finished. The rest of the vegetables will have to wilt for a few days before we can process them.
"Mom, let's go have roast duck for dinner. We've worked all day, we need to make up for it."
"Your wages aren't low. You expect to eat roast duck after doing this little bit of work. Most people can't afford to hire you."
"So I need to find a secure job so I can live a life free from financial worries."
Sanqi was craving roast duck.
"Okay, let's rest for a bit, then we'll go. Your dad drove over today, so we can go to the one in the city. I always feel that one is the most authentic."
"Aren't they all the same? How can someone who can't even tell the difference between seasonings tell which one is authentic?"
The betrayal from her own mother caused Bonnie to clutch her chest, feigning pain.
"Honey, you're covering the wrong spot. Your heart is a little off-center."
Gu Ye quickly came over to help his wife adjust the position of her hand, which made everyone laugh.
Sanqi looked at his parents and thought, "Really, is it really necessary?" His father was truly an exceptionally good man; their cooperation was flawless.
"Second Uncle, Second Aunt, are you there?"
"Xuanyi, what brings you here? Is something the matter?"
"Gu Xiangdong is gone."
"Who's missing? Gu Xiangdong? Where did he go? Are you confused? Can't find your way home?"
Gu Ye thought Gu Xiangdong had developed dementia and was finally getting his comeuppance.
"No, he's dead. My dad wants you to come over there; it's near the park close to the compound."
Gu Xuanyi and his group were on their way to dinner, but before they left, the police officers arrived.
"Dead?"
Gu Ye was a little incredulous; could he have died so easily?
When Sanqi heard the name "Little Park," his heart skipped a beat. Could it be that he had died at that woman's place?
"Go and see him quickly. No matter what, you are still his son in name only. It wouldn't be right not to go."
“I know, I’ll go take a look right away. Mom and Dad, you should go back to the compound too. It’s on my way, I’ll take you back first, no rush.”
Gu Ye was genuinely not in a hurry; he didn't care whether he lived or died.
The group locked the gate and took a car back to the compound.
Gu Ye and Bao Ni changed their clothes and walked towards the park together.
Gu Xuanyi and Sanqi followed behind, also wanting to know what had happened.
Aren't you two scared?
"Don't worry, I know the place."
Sanqi looked at the familiar road and knew he was at that woman's house.
How did you know?
“I saw Gu Xiangdong go to that woman’s house; it’s along this road.”
Bonnie looked at Sanqi; her son's words were truly astonishing!
"We'll talk about it later. Let's go see what's going on first. My brother is waiting."
Gu Ye really didn't want to go, but he couldn't leave his brother alone.
"We've arrived, this is the place."
Sanqi pointed to a small courtyard not far from the park gate, where a commotion could be faintly heard, but no one knew what was going on.
"Big brother, what happened?"
In the courtyard, Gu Xiangdong had a knife stuck in his chest. Xu Fang sat not far away, next to a woman in her forties, covered in blood and with injuries on her face.
There were still people inside the house, and someone was shaking at the window.
"It's hard to explain in a short time. Right now, the police are taking Xu Fang away, and someone will take our dad away soon too."
"Understood, we'll cooperate with the police. Officer, is an autopsy necessary?"
Gu Ye asked the policeman beside him, "I really didn't expect it to end like this." Looking at Gu Xiangdong's unseeing eyes, he truly didn't expect to die at Xu Fang's hands.
A short while later, the police car arrived, and several police officers came in. Some of them shook hands with Gu Ze.
"Mayor Gu, we will definitely handle this matter impartially."
"I trust you. If we follow the normal procedures, I'm just an ordinary family member."
Gu Ze exchanged pleasantries with the police officers, while Bao Ni and Gu's sister-in-law watched from the side. The scene looked a bit like a crime scene.
However, that woman looked to be only in her forties. What could she be after? Maybe she was after Gu Xiangdong, or the little money in his pocket? Who knows?
Sister-in-law Gu truly never expected that this person could be so shameless as to do such a thing. She wondered if there were any gods in this world, and whether Gu Xiangdong would be beaten when he met the ancestors of the Gu family in the future. He'd really brought shame upon himself.
Shortly after, the police officers took Gu Xiangdong, Xu Fang, and the woman away.
Gu Ye and Gu Ze, as family members, also went over, while Bao Ni and Gu's sister-in-law took the child home.
They're not some kind of hero, there's no need for such a big fuss.
Bonnie also needs to go home and tell Gu's three daughters about this.
"Sigh, he did nothing good while he was alive, but now that he's dead, his children are there to bury him. There's no one like him."
"That's right. Luckily, I don't have to be buried with my mother-in-law, otherwise, it would be even more unbearable."
Bao Ni and Sister-in-law Gu also expressed their feelings, saying that Gu Xiangdong's only contribution in his life was giving birth to Gu Ye and Gu Ze.
"What happened?"
Bonnie's parents were also concerned. Although they had no connection with Gu Xiangdong, they knew a little about him.
