While things were in chaos outside, Bonnie lived a peaceful life. The island remained largely unchanged, like a secluded paradise, temporarily forgotten by the world.
Zhao Yuan also gave birth to a daughter. Bai Chaoyang was very happy. He now had a daughter of his own and no longer had to watch Gu Ye smug.
Bonnie's sister-in-law gave birth to another son. There's nothing we can do about it; that's just how the Lin family's genes are—more men than women, and it's been like that for every generation.
Because of the various events happening outside, Zhao Yuan was very worried. She worried that her identity would cause trouble for Bai Chaoyang, and she was also worried about her family. Every day after finishing her chores, she would take her child to Bao Ni's house. Being with the two of them made her feel more at ease.
The family compound wasn't so peaceful either; there were always those who were cowardly and afraid of trouble, and who would scatter when disaster struck.
What's going on outside?
When Bao Ni saw Zhao Yuanniang and her two companions come in, she inquired about their whereabouts.
Last night, Liu Jiu peed on the blanket. Bonnie spent the whole morning washing the blanket. She heard the commotion but didn't go out.
"My neighbors next door are getting a divorce. The kids are begging their dad not to divorce their mom. The kids are crying and the adults are yelling. It's been going on for ages. I just wanted to come over here for some peace and quiet. Sigh!"
Zhao Yuan was heartbroken!
"Mommy, I'll protect you." Bai Song's innocent voice instantly snapped Zhao Yuan back to reality. She had been so distracted and anxious these past few days that she had neglected her child.
"Look, even the little pine tree is braver than you. It hasn't done anything yet, but you've already scared yourself half to death."
Bonnie also noticed that Zhao Yuan was acting strangely, but she knew she had to figure it out herself.
"What's the situation with your neighbors? I think they're from the Third Regiment, right? They're not young, and it seems they have several children!"
"Battalion Commander Li of the Third Regiment, his family is from the countryside, poor peasants. His wife is from the same place as him, and I heard her family are big landowners."
This is a love story between a landlord's daughter and a farmhand's son.
“The military has to intervene in this matter. If everyone follows suit, it will be terrible. If something happens, they will get a divorce. What kind of trend is this?”
Bonnie thought it was extremely unfair. They hadn't even done anything yet, and they were already cutting their losses to survive. Such character was unacceptable, especially in a place like the military.
Bonnie finished washing the blankets, picked up Liu Jiu, and planned to go see what happened next.
"I'll go take a look, do you want to come?"
“Let’s go, I’ll go too. We can’t keep running away from this.”
The two locked the door, picked up the child, and walked to the front row.
"Dad, please, don't divorce Mom. If we divorce, where will she go? There'll be no one left in her family!" The boy's hoarse voice was filled with sorrow.
"If we don't divorce, she'll drag our whole family down, including your uncles and cousins—they're all your blood relatives." The old woman's shrill voice was grating to the ears.
"What does my mother's situation have to do with my uncles? If they're afraid of being implicated, they can separate from the family and sever ties. When my mother needed money and goods, why weren't they afraid of being implicated? My mother's status didn't just appear at that time."
"You bastard, who do you think you are talking to? You disrespectful brat! Boss, look at this! Look at the state of this child! Hurry up and find the boss, get a divorce, and do it right now, or you're not a descendant of the Li family!"
The old lady pulled out her trump card, shouting that she would kick her son out of the house.
"Dad, you can't, and the boss won't agree either."
The boy's voice was uncertain; he was scared!
“Li Jun, I can agree to a divorce, but you have to promise to take good care of the children and not send them back to their hometown. I’m not comfortable with that.”
Li Jun's wife didn't cry or beg. She has three children and doesn't want them to be implicated. Divorce might be a way out.
"Mom, you can't."
"Ya Ru, you..."
Looking at his wife, who was no longer young, Li Jun wondered how, if it weren't for the class distinctions, he, the son of a farmhand, could possibly marry such a beautiful young lady.
He was overjoyed when the pampered young lady, whom he had never dared to look at since childhood, agreed to marry him.
He knew that Ya Ru would never have married him if it weren't for the circumstances. Over the years, she had no family left, and her parents were like that; she had endured it all for the sake of her child.
"Mom, I can't divorce Yaru."
This is the woman he has longed for for so many years; Li Jun simply cannot bear to let her go.
"If you don't get a divorce, what will happen to your brother and his family? What will happen to your nephew? Won't they be implicated in the future? For a woman, you're willing to give up everything. Are you even willing to abandon your parents and relatives?"
The old lady started throwing a tantrum, wailing and cursing her daughter-in-law, and complaining about her son's unfilial behavior.
With an attitude of not giving up until they get a divorce, he sat on the ground slapping his thigh.
"Why are you crying and making a scene?"
Sister Zhang's stern voice startled the old lady, making her stifle her sobs.
"Sister Zhang, you've come. I'm sorry to have troubled you."
Ya Ru looked at the two children behind Sister Zhang and knew what was going on.
“It’s not a problem. We live in the same residential compound. There are some things we can’t start.”
Ya Ru understood what Sister Zhang meant: she wasn't the only one in the family compound with problematic social class backgrounds; if everyone started getting divorced, things would get chaotic.
"Grandma, please get up. The ground is quite dirty. Let's talk things out. In the army, we don't practice crying, making a scene, or threatening suicide. This is a place for reason."
"As for whether or not to divorce, that's a matter between Battalion Commander Li and his wife. Our country's Marriage Law stipulates that people are free to marry and free to divorce, and this should not be interfered with by anyone else."
Hearing Zhang's words, the old lady's eyes darted around, knowing she wouldn't get the better of the situation. She stood up abruptly and said, "Eldest son, since you've chosen to be with this woman and not get a divorce, don't blame your parents for being heartless. I'll go back and publish a notice in the newspaper severing ties with you. If anything happens to you in the future, don't let it affect your brother and nephew."
