It's April, and Bonnie brought back all sorts of vegetable seedlings from her grandmother and planted them all over the empty space in the yard.
Liu Jiu can understand what we're saying now, and she's stopped causing trouble and stealing things from everywhere.
Because of her morning exercises with Gu Ye, her control over her strength has improved significantly, and she no longer easily pulls down children.
"Mom, have some candy."
"Liu Jiu, we've finished all the candy for today, have you forgotten?"
"Eat tomorrow's."
"No, the candy from tomorrow can only be eaten tomorrow."
Liu Jiu likes to eat sweets; in fact, most children like sweets. Bonnie cuts White Rabbit milk candies into small pieces and gives her one a day.
Seeing that her mother had no choice but to agree, Liu Jiu stopped crying and wandered around the room looking for other food.
Bonnie was writing in her notebook, wanting to try an experiment in seaweed farming.
There were bamboo trees on the mountain, and the rope was also in the works. Grandpa told Bonnie that they often used a type of seaweed rope that was strong and corrosion-resistant. Bonnie and Grandpa learned how to make this rope and had already collected quite a few.
Bonnie wanted to find some wild kelp seedlings to test the possibility of artificial cultivation.
Bonnie knew that cultivating seedlings was crucial for the artificial cultivation of kelp, but the necessary conditions weren't available at the moment. Bonnie considered collecting wild kelp seedlings for experiments, which would allow her to advance the planting time.
Decades later, kelp farming has reached a large scale. Generally, it is planted after October, and after a five- or six-month growing period, it is harvested and dried.
The island is relatively calm right now, and Bonnie wants to find a place to conduct an experiment and record the data.
There's still over a month before the kelp seedlings emerge, which is plenty of time.
Bonnie had already chosen the location: near her secret base. The area was deserted, with good water quality and ample light. Plus, she could store her crafting tools in a cave there.
It's all planned out. Every day after dinner, Bonnie will take Liu Jiu back to her parents' home.
Neither Grandma nor Grandpa worked; Grandpa was forced to stay home. He was too old to be a strong young man anymore, so he stayed home to tend the garden and help Grandma with the children. With the majority in charge, Grandpa finally agreed.
The reason for this was that the family's situation had improved; Lin Tao and Lin Bo had joined the army and received subsidies; and most importantly, the family was missing two young men to feed. Lin's family consisted of four people: one able-bodied man, one with a job, and they were quite well-off.
"Grandpa, I'm leaving Liu Jiu here. I'm going up the mountain and will be back at noon."
"Okay, you can go without worry. Da Bao is still here."
Goodbye, Liu Jiu.
Goodbye, Mom!
Liu Jiu loves coming to Grandma's house; there's her older brother Da Bao there, and lots of delicious food. Grandma's cooking is way better than Bao Ni's; the kids can probably tell the difference now!
Since being weaned, Liu Jiu has become quite particular about food, largely because Bao Ni's cooking is not very good.
Bonnie rode her bicycle to the foot of the mountain, locked it, and hid it carefully. She then carried a basket on her back and took a machete up the mountain. When she reached the cave, the bamboo raft she had made a few days earlier was almost completely dried.
Bonnie plans to make two bamboo rafts for the first time, record the data, and keep it for future reference.
Bonnie's main task this time is to find mature kelp and note its approximate location so that she can collect kelp seedlings.
Bonnie changed into a swimsuit, which she bought when she went to Beijing. Bonnie thought it looked good and bought several sets.
After warming up, Bonnie tied a burlap sack around her waist so she could pack up any good seafood she could find.
The light penetration in this area is excellent; Bonnie was several meters below the surface and could still see clearly. Soon, she spotted a large patch of mature seaweed growing among the rocks—more than enough.
Bonnie quickly gathered some seafood, surfaced, and noted its location, planning to come back in May to collect seaweed seedlings.
After enjoying a feast of sea cucumbers and abalone, and even catching a large octopus, Bonnie returned to the cave. Changing her clothes, she decided not to leave empty-handed and gathered a basketful of wild vegetables. By the time she got home, it was already noon.
"You're back, just in time for dinner."
Grandma brought the food to the table, while Grandpa and Da Bao looked at the two little ones.
The eldest brother's second child is a few months younger than Liu Jiu and can walk, but he is not as strong as Liu Jiu.
The food has been ready for ages, but Bonnie's parents still haven't come back. I wonder what's going on.
"Grandpa, I'm going to see why my parents haven't come back yet. Is something wrong? You guys eat first."
"Bonnie, eat something first. You've been busy on the mountain all morning, and you're starving."
Bonnie was indeed hungry. She scooped out a bowl of rice and ate a bite first, otherwise she would feel uneasy about being hungry.
After eating two bowls of rice, Bonnie felt full and went out.
Their island team's land is all in that area, it's relatively concentrated, and easy to find.
"Bonnie, are you looking for your parents?"
I hadn't walked far when I saw my third aunt coming towards me. "Third aunt, where are my parents?"
"Don't even mention it. The people from the second team aren't farming properly; they're doing criticism and struggle sessions, and they've come all the way to our first team. My older brother and the others are trying to stop them, but what if they get hurt or die during the struggle sessions? Who will take responsibility for that? Those bastards from the second team will definitely deny everything, not a single one of them will be any good, especially Wang Daya."
Bonnie was surprised that the second team was still going through a period of hardship. Last year, they almost starved to death. How come they have no memory of that?
"Third Aunt, I'll go check on things. You should go home and cook."
"Okay, go keep an eye on things, make sure a fight doesn't break out, it's not good if anyone gets hurt!"
Bonnie quickened her pace; she could already faintly hear the commotion.
"Captain Lin, you're protecting bad elements! You'll be criticized and denounced!"
"Wang Daya, you're talking nonsense! Our Lin family has several martyrs and several children in the army. You're slandering us with your bare words. I'll tear your mouth apart."
