The sounds of Bao Ni's mother and Wang Daya arguing could be heard quite far; they were both quite loud.
"Mom and Dad, dinner is ready. Come home and eat."
"Oh, isn't this the Lin family's golden phoenix?"
Wang Daya's sarcastic tone was so sour that you could smell it from a distance; her family didn't even need to add vinegar when cooking.
"The leaders all say that they oppose feudal superstition and all old ideas."
"Aunt Wang, what are you trying to do by talking about phoenixes and such?"
"The leaders all say we should dig deep tunnels, store plenty of grain, and never seek hegemony. Why don't you go to the fields during the busy farming season to try and grow more grain to contribute to the country? What are you trying to do?"
Bonnie pressed him with questions, changing her phrases repeatedly, leaving Wang Daya and the people from the Second Brigade completely bewildered.
"All reactionaries are paper tigers. Are you trying to rebel?"
"You, Lin Baoni, you, you can't talk nonsense. We're here to defeat the bad guys."
Wang Daya was startled and stammered, not knowing a single one of the quotes that Bao Ni had said.
"They were sent down to the countryside because the leaders wanted to reform them through labor. You ignored the leaders' intentions and relied on brute force to carry out criticism and struggle sessions, so you didn't understand the leaders' meaning. Now that they've been defeated, are you going to do the work?"
"If someone is killed in your fighting, will your second team be responsible for the incident?"
"Father, Mother, let's go. If anything happens, the Second Team will be responsible. It has nothing to do with us. Let's go."
Bonnie's parents understood and told the group to go home for lunch, as they still had work to do in the afternoon.
The second team watched the first team leave, unsure of what to do—fight or not?
Wang Daya and his wife were terrified; if they died, they wouldn't be able to bear the responsibility.
Finally, the group left looking dejected.
They breathed a sigh of relief when they saw the second team leave; they were no longer going to be humiliated!
