Bonnie sang as she walked down the mountain, but she couldn't remember all the lyrics, and her singing was quite eerie.
Bonnie walked home, enjoying herself immensely. Little did she know that not far from her, several children were searching for wild berries and were terrified when they heard her singing.
"Dog Egg, did you hear that sound? It sounds like something is howling."
"Gousheng, I think I heard it too, and the sound is changing. It's terrifying. Let's go home."
"Wow, there's a ghost! Run!"
One of the timid boys ran down the mountain shouting as he went. Several other boys, no longer looking for fruit, grabbed their baskets and ran down the mountain.
Bonnie knew nothing and was unaware that she had frightened anyone. She happily ran home, telling her mother to stew the pheasant for dinner.
When I'm in a bad mood, I eat something. If one meal isn't enough, I eat another. Today I eat chicken, tomorrow I eat fish!
"Mother, I'm back! Look what I brought back!"
Bonnie pushed open the courtyard gate and shouted loudly.
"You brat, keep your voice down, the children are all asleep!" Bao Ni's mother rushed out in a panic, wishing she could sew her daughter's mouth shut.
"Okay, okay, I won't call anymore." Bonnie was so happy that she forgot it was the children's bedtime.
Thankfully, the door was closed, and the children were fast asleep and were not woken up by Bonnie.
"Where have you been this wild again? What did you pick back? Why are you making such a fuss?" Bao Ni's mother scolded her daughter as she took the things from her hands. Wow, she's really picked quite a few things.
To avoid drawing attention, Bonnie wrapped the pheasant in wild vegetables. There was also a large bundle of wild vegetables, plus a basket of apples, with a layer of wild vegetables on top. Bonnie's mother thought it was all wild vegetables.
"Mom, look what this is!"
Bonnie parted the wild vegetables, revealing the plump pheasant.
"Oh my god, isn't this a pheasant? Quick, cover it up, cover it up!"
When Bao Ni's mother saw the pheasant, she quickly covered it with wild vegetables and looked around to make sure no one else would see it.
"Mom, there's no need for that. This is the family compound."
"What do you know? You can't see into someone's heart. Be careful. It's better to avoid trouble at this time."
Bao Ni's mother tapped her daughter's head, saying, "All you've got is strength, not brains."
Bonnie discovered that since she gave birth to Liu Jiu, her status in her mother's heart had plummeted. She was no longer her mother's favorite little darling; Liu Jiu had directly replaced her, and Liu Jiu would poke her at the drop of a hat.
Bao Ni's mother, carrying the pheasant and wild vegetables, quickly went into the kitchen.
"Mother, is there anything else?"
Bonnie was afraid her mother would poke her again, so she picked up her basket and followed her into the kitchen.
"What else? There are pheasants too? You raided a pheasant nest?"
"What are you dreaming about? You even raided a pheasant's nest? Where are there pheasant nests on this mountain? We found an apple tree, and the apples are so sweet. Try some, Mom."
Bonnie took an apple, rubbed it against herself, and handed it to her mother.
"My god, you're dirtier than an apple, and you're still rubbing it on yourself. What's with all the fuss? You might as well just eat it."
Bao Ni's mother took the apple, unconsciously rubbed it on herself a couple of times, took a bite, and found it was indeed quite sweet.
"Ha ha ha ha……"
Bonnie saw her mother rub against her a couple of times and couldn't help but burst into laughter. Was this hereditary, or was it something that had subtly influenced her? Would Liu Jiu follow suit in the future?
When Bao Ni's mother came over, she also laughed.
After a delicious pheasant and mushroom soup and a tasty meal prepared by her mother, Bao Ni felt revitalized. She realized her recent bad mood wasn't due to missing Gu Ye, but rather because the food she'd been eating was terrible.
The children ate heartily and were quite full. Liu Jiu kept saying, "Grandma's cooking is so delicious! Grandma, will you come again tomorrow?"
“We like to eat this, and Grandma will make it for you again in the future. If Grandma isn’t busy tomorrow, she will come and cook for you again.”
"Okay, let's do it again."
Bai Song and Bai Yang echoed Liu Jiu's sentiments, saying that it seemed they really hadn't eaten very well before.
After seeing Grandma off, the children played in the yard for a while. When it got dark, Bonnie finished washing the clothes and tidying up. She then gave each of the children an apple to eat in the yard.
Bonnie took a few more apples and delivered them to Aunt Huang next door. Her child wasn't very old either, a little older than Baisong. They all had a hard life, and the children only got to eat fruit a few times a year.
The basket of apples looked like a lot. Bonnie took some back to Grandma and the others, the children each ate one, and she took some more to the neighbors. There weren't many left.
"Baoni, take these back for Liu Jiu and the others. Zhao Yuan's two children are here too." Aunt Huang knew that Bao Ni wasn't very good at cooking and was also looking after three children, so she felt bad taking Bao Ni's apples.
"Sister-in-law, stop tearing it, take it. I found an apple tree on the mountain today and picked some. There are still some left. Let the children have a taste. It's not easy to find a tree with apples that aren't sour. Let them all have a taste and sweeten their mouths."
Bonnie put a few apples on the table, turned around and walked home, leaving the three children still in the yard.
Sister Huang looked at her children, who were staring longingly at the apple in her hand, and silently gave one to each of them.
The sweet and sour taste of apples makes children smile and think that apples are the most delicious thing in the world.
Bonnie had the three children rinse their mouths, wash their faces and feet, and then run the water. They all went back to their rooms to get ready for bed.
Today we ate delicious pheasant meat, as well as tasty vegetables and sweet and sour apples. The children had smiles on their faces the whole time. I wonder if they'll have sweet dreams tonight.
The child quickly fell asleep.
Bonnie lay on the kang (a heated brick bed), her mind a jumbled mess. One moment it was Gu Ye, the next it was the pheasant, then the apple, then her mother, then the seaweed seedlings that had wandered off to who-knows-where—a chaotic jumble that made it hard for her to fall asleep.
The next day, he woke up with swollen eyes again and was teased by his neighbor, Mrs. Huang.
"Baby, are you missing Gu Ye?"
"Sister-in-law Huang is so funny. When did I ever think about Gu Ye?"
"You said you hadn't thought about it, but look at your eyes, they're all swollen. You couldn't sleep last night, you cried, didn't you!"
My goodness, this is a huge misunderstanding. She really didn't cry yesterday.
Without listening to Bao Ni's explanation, Sister Huang went inside and started yelling at her husband, Battalion Commander Huang, "My goodness, Bao Ni next door is so sad about her husband, Gu Ye, that her eyes are all swollen from crying!"
"Really? Don't spread rumors."
Battalion Commander Huang didn't believe it. He thought that missing someone could make you cry and your eyes swell up, so all the women in the family compound must have swollen eyes.
"I saw it clearly. If you don't believe me, go outside and take a look."
Bonnie felt like crying when she heard the loud voices of the couple next door. What was going on?
Well, I feel refreshed this morning, my mind is clear, and I don't want to think about anything else.
When Gu Ye returned, his wife Lin Baoni had cried so much that her eyes were swollen from missing him, and the news spread throughout the entire military region.
Lin Baoni became famous again, but that's another story!
