When Gu Ye came home from get off work that evening, Bao Ni was still gossiping about the Gu family.
"You and your sister-in-law really have a lot of free time. With so many things to do, your sister-in-law must have written quite a few letters, right?"
"Haha...you guessed right, I wrote more than ten pages, and there's one about you too, do you want to hear it?"
Gu Ye ladled the dishes out, plated them, and placed them on the table. Liu Jiu was ready and waiting to start eating.
"What business is it of mine?"
"It's about you, Deng Bing's sister. After getting married, she felt that her husband was not as good as Gu, and she quarrels with him every day and wants a divorce!"
"Mom, is Gu talking about Dad?"
Besides eating rice, Liu Jiu can also participate in her mother's gossip.
"You..."
Gu Ye has completely lost his temper. This big one and this little one, they have so many things going on every day.
This is so boring, they're not cooperating at all.
"Gu Ye, your friend Deng Bing isn't much better. He knew his sister's feelings, yet he still brought her to that gathering. I wanted to give him a piece of my mind, but I let it go for your sake."
"I know. We haven't been in touch much since then. You see, you sent things to the others but not to Deng Bing. I didn't say anything, did I?"
Bonnie thought about it and realized that she had sent a letter to Li Hongjun, who was not married, under Gu Ye's name, but she hadn't sent one to Deng Bing.
"Fine, you're right."
Bonnie started cooking and didn't have time for idle chatter.
"Mom, are we going to spend Chinese New Year with Grandma this year?"
"That depends on your dad. If he's in the army and won't be coming back, we'll go to your mom's house. If he is, we'll stay at home."
Liu Jiu looked at her father, her big, round eyes filled with unspoken emotions.
“I understand what you two mean. I have to work this year, but I can come back on the second day of the Lunar New Year. I will pick you up from your maternal grandparents’ house then.”
"We only have one meal at noon on New Year's Eve, and then we come back to stay up all night. On our island, married daughters don't spend New Year's Eve at their parents' home."
Bonnie didn't want to break this tradition; there was no need. She could just follow the crowd, and it wasn't a matter of principle.
"Dad, my grandma makes some delicious food. I'll definitely save some for you when you come back."
Liu Jiu was very happy. She heard from her grandmother that she was going to have lots of delicious food for the New Year and invited her to come and eat.
After the family had eaten and drunk their fill, Liu Jiu helped clear the dishes, Bao Ni swept the floor, and Gu Ye cleaned the kitchen.
It was getting dark and quite cold outside, so the family stayed inside to digest their food and didn't plan to go out.
On New Year's Day, Gu Ye was on duty, while Bao Ni took the New Year's goods and Liu Jiu back to her parents' home.
This year is especially lively. My second brother, Lin Tao, arrived home the day before yesterday. He had been in the army for several years and was finally back.
"Bonnie, slow down! Don't you know you're pregnant?"
"Yes, my dear mother!"
Bao Ni's mother wanted to give her a good beating, so she raised her hand and then lowered it again.
"Grandma, what delicious food is there today? I need to bring some back for my dad; he really wants some."
We shouldn't be too formal with Liu Jiu; we should even leave some for her dad, so he can eat and take some with him.
"Okay, Grandma will install it for you then."
"I thank my dad's mother-in-law on his behalf!"
"Ha ha……"
Liu Jiu's words amused everyone in the room. This child, I don't know who he takes after, just keeps talking like an adult.
"Liu Jiu, how can you be so cute!"
Lin Tao lifted Liu Jiu above his head and spun him around several times.
"Second Uncle, you're not fast enough!"
Liu Jiu often plays this game with her dad, Gu Ye is quite fast.
"Oh no, Lin Tao, even Liu Jiu is disgusted with you. Speed things up."
Sister-in-law Lin laughed until tears streamed down her face. This Liu Jiu was really funny. Looking back at her simple-minded youngest son, who was a few months younger than Liu Jiu, the difference was huge.
"Mom, why are you looking at me like that?"
"It's nothing, you eat."
Forget it, being able to eat is a blessing. Let's stop comparing, it's just upsetting.
Bao Ni's mother patted her grandson's head. He was being disliked by his mother. Luckily, he was easygoing.
Liu Jiu and her second uncle were having a great time, and Bao Ni didn't pay any attention to her, handing over the things she was carrying to her mother.
"Grandpa, Father, this is the wine Gu Ye bought for you. I've left it here for you."
"Don't leave it there, the child will break it."
Grandpa walked over in a few steps, looking nothing like a man in his sixties; his legs were nimble.
"Wow, this wine is pretty good!"
Grandpa's only hobby was having a drink with a few old buddies.
My grandfather has two biological brothers and even more cousins. They often have a drink together and get along very well.
Bonnie left her things there and didn't bother with them. She was a little sleepy and was going to take a nap. She had to go home to celebrate the New Year that night.
She ate at her parents' house during the day, but had to go back to her own home in the evening. It's the Lunar New Year, so she needed to light a lamp; the God of Wealth couldn't miss her house.
Besides, no married daughters on their island spend New Year's Eve at their parents' home.
The lunch was sumptuous, and Liu Jiu ate to her heart's content, saying that her grandmother hadn't lied and that there really was delicious food.
After dinner, Bonnie prepared to take Liu Jiu home. Her mother brought her a bowl of dumpling filling and a bowl of various fried foods, which Liu Jiu wanted, for her father.
Lin Tao, the second brother, was in charge of escorting her. Bao Ni ate and carried things along the way, and her sister-in-law didn't object. Bao Ni often brought things back to her parents' home. Her aunt also frequently bought food for the two children in the family.
That's how relatives are—some are always good friends, unlike her maternal family…
The sister-in-law in the family compound who didn't go back to her hometown for the Spring Festival was really envious of Bao Ni carrying big bags and small packages to her parents' home and bringing back big and small basins!
"Liu Jiu, what delicious treats did you get from Grandma's house this time?"
