Chapter 16: Cake
After recuperating at home for more than a month, Qin Zhilin's legs were basically fine. He had discussed with his wife early in the morning that he would send Qin Qing to school once he contacted someone. Although life was a bit hard, he had to go on.
Old Mrs. Lu secretly sent some things to Captain Yang's home, said a few nice words, and arranged an easy job for Qin Zhilin.
He was in charge of farm tools in the team and didn't earn much, but it was easy and labor-saving, which suited him. However, this made Qin's eldest sister-in-law complain a lot.
"Dad, let's really go to town today!" Qin Qing's face was full of joy that could not be concealed, and her beautiful big eyes were curved into crescents.
"Well, Qingqing, do you want to go study?"
"I do!" Of course she did. At her age, if she didn't go to school, she would have to work in the fields.
"Good girl." Qin Zhilin touched her head with relief.
I sold my wife's silver bracelet last time and had some money left. The child's tuition is 80 cents a semester, and it can be paid out if I save up. The rare thing is that she has to go all the way by herself. I don't know if the child can endure the hardship.
So today they had to rely on their own two legs to go to town.
At first, Qin Qing was jumping happily, but later she felt weaker and weaker. Her legs felt like they were filled with lead and it was difficult for her to lift them up. The soles of her feet felt hot and as if their skin was broken.
"Qingqing, are you tired?"
Looking at her father's worried expression, she knew very well that this was a test for herself. If she couldn't even walk this short distance, there would be no one at home to take her to school.
She gritted her teeth and said against her will, "I'm not tired."
Qin Zhilin felt comforted when he saw his daughter's stubborn look.
It took more than an hour before the two of them were on the street.
Qin Qing was full of expectations for the town, but he didn't expect that there were only a few houses and a dry street, which was too shabby to look at.
Only the state-owned restaurants were covered with bricks, and they looked very old. The older sister from the supply and marketing cooperative looked at them without even raising her eyelids, and didn't care whether you bought anything or not. These days, the sellers are the bosses.
"䀲志, how much is this 槽子糕?" Qin Zhilin asked gritting his teeth, touching the ticket in his pocket.
"One dollar for two tickets."
Qin Zhilin took out the pastry ticket from his pocket, counted out the dimes and handed it to the salesperson.
The eldest sister looked at them straight in the eye, took out a square piece of yellow paper from under the counter, and wrapped eight pieces of cornmeal mixed together in the trough cake.
Qin Zhilin hurriedly reminded him, "Cut it into two."
The salesperson rolled his eyes, then took out a piece of yellow paper and started to unwrap it. Although his service attitude was not very good, the package was square and very neat.
Qin Zhilin took the children to the corner, opened a package and took out a piece of tiaozi cake for his little daughter.
"Dad, you eat it." Qin Qing was not too interested in this so-called trough cake. It was like the waterless cake that came later, and it was not made of flour. Of course, it was not as good as the soft cakes she usually ate.
But now it seems that this is a good thing.
"Dad ate a lot this morning and isn't hungry yet. Qingqing, try one!" Children all love sweets, so of course he wanted to let his daughter try it first.
Unable to resist her father's loving look, she had no choice but to take the small cake, split it into two pieces, ate one piece herself, and gave one piece to her father.
It’s no wonder that this pure natural and additive-free caozi cake is very fragrant, making it a great gift.
At the end of the street were residential houses. When Qin Zhilin came to the first store, an old lady happened to come out to pour water.
"Auntie, does Teacher Liu Gufeng live in this building?"
Qin Zhilin hurried forward and asked.
It’s a pity that the old lady’s hearing is not very good.
"What?"
"Liu Gufeng, is this Teacher Liu Gufeng home?" he had to ask loudly.
There were hurried footsteps in the corridor. A thin man in light blue clothing came out. He was wearing a pair of glasses and looked at the people in confusion. "I am Liu Gufeng. May I ask who you are..."
"We just moved to Yangjia Village and wanted to ask what our children are learning."
The old lady finally reacted.
"Gu Feng, this is your student!" The old lady looked kind, but her brain was a little not very good. She asked the two to go upstairs quickly.
Liu Gufeng explained with an embarrassed look, "This is my mother. She has a bit of dementia."
Qin Qing greeted her obediently, "Hello, Grandma!"
Typical Alzheimer's, this is all too common.
Qin Zhilin rubbed his hands, picked up his things and followed him upstairs.
…
Yang Liansheng was also in town at this moment, but he was not in a very good mood.
"Old man, what did you say!" The young man looked incredulous.
Since he hadn't received any message urging him to go, the boy finally couldn't help but call to inquire.
