Chapter 248 I Don’t Want to Die (1/2)

Qi Monan said, "Political Commissar Qin arranged it, right? He didn't even say it was inappropriate, so what are you imagining? Oh, and why were you knocking on the door?"

He Hongjun said, "I heard you and Captain Ning talking in the courtyard. My wife told me that the military doctor lives next door. I guessed that Doctor Song must be living here, so I came over to say hello."

Song Yun came out of the house and was surprised to see He Hongjun. "You live next door?"

He Hongjun nodded. "My wife is still busy, so I didn't ask her to come over. I'll ask her to come over and get to know you some other day. We'll be neighbors in the future."

Song Yun didn't object, "Okay, come in and sit for a while."

Qi Mo Nan asked, "Have you had dinner?"

The smile on He Hongjun's face was slightly stiff. "I've eaten. It's getting late. I won't go in. You guys go back. I'm going back too."

When He Hongjun returned to his home, he found his wife, whom he had only met twice, rummaging through his bag. He thought she was going to wash his dirty clothes, so a smile immediately crossed his face. But the smile barely lasted two seconds before she dropped his bag, ignoring the dirty clothes that had been uncovered, and walked away, muttering under her breath, "You didn't bring back anything good, and your bag stinks."

The smile on He Hongjun's face froze, and he felt a little unhappy, but he held back and said nothing. He picked up the dirty clothes and washed them. After washing, he wanted to ask his wife if she had eaten dinner, but his wife had already fallen asleep. He could only quietly leave and go to the kitchen to see if there was anything to eat. However, there was nothing in the kitchen. The stove was covered with thick dust, and the iron pot was a little rusty, which showed that it had not been cooked for a long time.

Thinking of the half steamed bun that Baoqi had left over from the journey, I took it out and ate it with cold water. I wasn't full, but at least I didn't feel as uncomfortable as before.

The beginning of married life seemed different from what he had imagined. He Hongjun smiled and hoped in his heart that tomorrow would be different from today.

The next morning, He Hongjun got up early for training as usual. Even though he was living in the family compound and not in the camp, early training had become a habit, and his body would wake up on its own at the right time.

After morning training, other comrades ran to the canteen, while he ran to the family compound with great anticipation. On the way, he met Qi Mo Nan who was also running to the family compound.

"Lao Qi, why are you, a bachelor, running to the staff quarters so early in the morning?" He Hongjun teased.

Qi Mo Nan glanced at him sideways, "Why? You feel superior after only one day of marriage?"

The two of them joked with each other and went to the family compound together, taking the same road.

From a distance, He Hongjun saw white smoke rising from the chimneys of every household, including Dr. Song's. Only his own chimney had nothing at all. At that moment, his heart sank.

Qi Mo'nan had heard some gossip about He Hongjun's wife from Ziyi last night. He knew that before He Hongjun came back, this new military wife had never cooked and always ate in the cafeteria. It seemed that today was no exception.

Qi Mo Nan patted He Hongjun's shoulder and said nothing. After all, it was someone else's family matter. "I'm going to have breakfast first. We'll go to the camp together in fifteen minutes."

He Hongjun grabbed Qi Mo Nan and said, "Old Qi, well, can you help me and teach me some advice? I really don't know how to get along with her."

So the two men whispered outside for five minutes, and then Qi Mo Nan returned to Song Yun's courtyard. He Hongjun turned around and ran to the supply and marketing cooperative, bought a bunch of things, such as rice, flour, oil, seasonings, and some kitchen utensils. He didn't call his wife who was still sleeping, but cleaned the kitchen and made a simple breakfast of noodles and eggs.

Sun Chahua, who was sleeping in the room, woke up hungry. After getting up, she found that He Hongjun had prepared breakfast. She mumbled something for a while, and without saying hello to He Hongjun, she went straight to the table and ate her portion.

After He Hongjun finished cleaning the kitchen, he came out and saw his wife eating the noodles he had made. He smiled and said, "Is it taste good? I'm not very good at cooking, so I just cooked it randomly."
