"Grandpa Wu." Song Yunqian walked into the pavilion and called out to Grandpa Wu, who was arguing with his chess friends with a red face.
When Mr. Wu saw Song Yun, he immediately threw down the chess pieces in his hand and shouted, "Yun girl is here to see me. I don't want to play with you anymore. You scoundrel, go play by yourself."
Old Zhang, who was called a scoundrel by Old Wu, also had his eyes light up when he saw Song Yun. He didn't bother to be angry with Old Wu. He threw away the chess pieces in his hand and shamelessly followed Old Wu back to his residence.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" Old Wu stopped Old Zhang in a pretentious manner.
Zhang Lao chuckled, "I haven't had much of an appetite lately. Just when Miss Yun came, I asked her for some stomach-strengthening pills."
Old Man Wu glared at him, "Did you call her Yun? Do you know her well? You are shameless."
Mr. Zhang didn't take it seriously. The two of them bickered all the time, but neither of them was really angry with the other. They were revolutionary comrades for decades, and neither knew the other's temper.
"If you care about me, I'll just call you Yun. The last time I saw Yun, I felt particularly close to her. Even though it was our first meeting, it felt like we'd known each other for ages."
Song Yun laughed secretly. These two old men were really interesting. They could argue about everything and still speak so seriously.
Old Man Wu asked Song Yun to sit down and he wanted to pour her some tea.
Song Yun hurriedly stopped him, "Don't pour the water, I brought some cherries, I'll go wash them and eat them while we talk."
Song Yun picked up the bag in her hand and shook it.
Seeing that the cherries were large and bright in color, Mr. Wu knew they were good to eat. He smiled and said, "Okay, go wash them in the back. There's a tap over there."
Song Yun went to the back to wash cherries. Old Wu glanced at Old Zhang and said, "Tell me, what do you want from Miss Yun?" He didn't believe Old Zhang's nonsense about his poor appetite. This old man could probably eat three bowls of rice even on the day he died. He had a good appetite. Everyone knew that.
Seeing that his old friend had asked him, Old Man Zhang no longer hid it, and he had no intention of hiding it either. There was nothing shameful in treating an illness.
"My second son, you know, has been married for three years and hasn't gotten pregnant yet. They both went to the hospital for checkups, and they said there was nothing wrong and that they just needed to recuperate and expect to get pregnant naturally. But now it's almost the fourth year, and there's no sign of pregnancy. I'm not worried, but my in-laws are extremely anxious. They've been looking for folk remedies everywhere for my second son and his wife to take. A while ago, they got into trouble. The couple vomited and had diarrhea, and they stayed in the hospital for a few days before being discharged. My second son said that his mother-in-law saw them and started looking for folk remedies again. He's so scared of her that he runs away when he sees her."
Old Wu had indeed heard Old Man Zhang mention the matter of his second son, but he didn't expect the matter to be so serious.
"You are not in a hurry, so why should your mother-in-law be in a hurry?" asked Old Wu.
Old Man Zhang glanced at Old Man Wu and said, "Sometimes I think that being alone like you isn't such a bad thing. At least you won't be coerced by those hypocritical and ridiculous relationships."
Mr. Wu rolled his eyes. "Can you please speak?"
Old Man Zhang smiled and continued, "You know our Zhang family's financial situation. My eldest, second, and third sons all work in good companies. I have some financial resources on my side too. The eldest son's wife is a good match for ours, and the third son's wife is also well-married. But the second son's wife's family is just an ordinary working-class family. His mother-in-law doesn't even have a job. I heard she came from the countryside and married into the city."
Mr. Wu asked, "You look down on me?"
Old man Zhang said, "Am I that kind of person? If I looked down on you, how could the second son get married so smoothly?"
That’s true.
"Then what do you want to say?" asked Mr. Wu.
Old man Zhang smiled bitterly and shook his head, "My in-laws thought they were marrying above their station, and they were worried that their daughter's delay in giving birth would affect the couple's relationship. They were also worried that I, as an elder, would instigate the second son to divorce his wife and remarry. That's why they were so anxious to get her daughter pregnant quickly."
