Qi Weidong frowned, "What truth?"
Wu Qin was anxious and shouted at Qi Guoqiang, "Guoqiang, what are you going to do?"
Qi Guoqiang said, "Just tell him the truth, let him know that there is no love or hate without reason in this world, and let him understand why grandpa doesn't like him."
Qi Weidong asked, "Why?"
Qi Guoqiang turned around and said, "Come in." Wu Qin grabbed Qi Weidong's arm and said, "Don't listen to your father. He's talking nonsense. Don't listen to him."
Qi Weidong frowned and pulled his arm out. "Let me listen first and see what my dad has to say."
Wu Qin stamped her feet anxiously, but there was nothing she could do but run into the house.
Qi Guoqiang turned on the light, sat down in his usual chair, picked up the tea that had already gone cold, took a sip, and spoke slowly.
"The reason your grandfather was persecuted and exiled to Heilongjiang Province was because your mother colluded with others and planted incriminating evidence in your grandfather's study."
These words were like thunder, exploding above Qi Weidong's head.
"After your grandfather was sent down to the countryside, your mother urged me to publish a newspaper advertisement to sever ties with him in order to protect myself. I was afraid of being implicated, so I followed your mother's advice and published the advertisement."
Qi Weidong knew this and was not surprised.
Qi Guoqiang continued, "I, your biological son, abandoned my father at the first opportunity. But Qi Mo Nan did not abandon his grandfather. He even wrote a letter of discharge from the army, hoping to be transferred to Qihei Province with your grandfather."
Qi Weidong glared, "He must be pretending, he hasn't retired yet."
Qi Guoqiang didn't refute him, and continued to talk to himself, "I also heard about it later. At that time, your grandfather threatened to commit suicide, forcing Mo Nan to tear up his discharge application and sever ties with his family. Mo Nan was afraid that your grandfather would die, so he had no choice but to do it. Later, he took advantage of his vacations to go to Heilongjiang Province and secretly took care of your grandfather, making his life there more comfortable. In order to have the opportunity to rebel on your grandfather's behalf, he fought hard on missions, his life hanging by a thread many times. He used his military merits to buy your grandfather the opportunity for a re-examination. Your grandfather's return alive and his re-employment were all due to Qi Mo Nan's life-saving efforts."
He stared at the stunned Qi Weidong, "And what have you done for your grandfather? Did you think of him when you were living a comfortable life in Beijing? Did you use your pocket money to buy him some food and send it to Heilongjiang Province so that he wouldn't starve? Or did you take a little cotton from your thick quilt and send some warm clothes to your grandfather in the bitter cold far away? Have you ever thought about it or done it?"
No, none at all.
He neither thought about it nor did it.
After his grandfather was sent down to the countryside, his life hardly changed. His parents never mentioned his grandfather in front of him. Besides, he and his grandfather were not close to begin with, so how could he remember the suffering the old man had endured in Heilongjiang Province?
"Dad, you have no right to blame me. I didn't do anything, and so did you," Qi Weidong said.
Wu Qin was almost crying. How could this damn kid dare to say anything?
Qi Guoqiang wasn't angry. He smiled miserably. "You're right. I have no right to blame you. I wasn't blaming you just now. I was just telling you the truth. That's why I opposed you and your mother looking for him. I don't have the nerve to do that, and neither do your mother and you."
Qi Weidong was still not convinced, but he was no longer a child. There were some things he couldn't say, so he could only run back to his room and sulk.
Qi Guoqiang looked at Wu Qin and said, "Let's get a divorce."
