Chapter 328 First Day in Dormitory: Planning to Farm

Lin Shan and Lin Yu returned to the villa and went to their grandparents' room to help them pack.

The two elderly people probably never intended to live in the villa permanently; apart from the clothes hanging outside, everything else was still in their luggage bags.

The wardrobe in the room is empty.

They hadn't been there long and didn't have much stuff. The brother and sister packed only two bags, one large and one small.

Seeing that his grandparents had finished packing their things, Lin Shan said, "I'll go pack mine."

Lin Yu nodded, knowing that he couldn't wait to move out.

She didn't say much; the Lin family did this out of respect for the Qiao family's grandparents.

They wouldn't treat the house they gave to Lin Yu as their own.

Lin Shan went to pack his things, while Lin Yu went to check on the kitchen.

There was still some food at home, and she knew she wouldn't be able to finish it all by herself, so she packed it all up.

Tell Lin Shan to take it to the dormitory so everyone can have a meal together to celebrate the move.

Lin Shan nodded and said, "The kitchen over there is also very good. I can cook for myself from now on."

The villa wasn't very close to the store, so they usually didn't come back until the store closed at night.

At first, Lin Yu took them to eat at a state-run restaurant, but later Grandpa Lin and Grandma Lin couldn't bear to part with them.

They preferred to prepare their own food in the small villa and then have a simple lunch at the shop.

The biggest advantage of having dormitories now is that they can go back and cook lunch.

Grandpa Lin and Grandma Lin are not young, they can't live on dry food every day.

Lin Yu nodded and said, "From now on, we'll take turns. One person will go back to cook, have lunch and rest for a while, and then continue opening the shop in the afternoon."

Lin Shan agreed, "Okay, anyway, not many people come over at noon."

The two of them took their belongings and returned to the dormitory.

While they were gone, Grandpa Lin and Grandma Lin directed several employees to clean the entire house.

They turned over all the soil in the yard.

As soon as Lin Yu and Lin Shan entered, they found them bustling about.

"Grandpa, Grandma, all your things are here. We also brought some food. Let's cook here today."

Grandma Lin nodded: "I was just about to tell you, let's eat here from now on."

Lin Yu agreed and then asked them what they were doing.

Grandpa Lin: "It's a waste to just leave this yard like this. Why don't we plant some vegetables?"

Grandma Lin frowned and asked Lin Yu, "Won't this violate the rules?"

The old man had worked the land all his life and couldn't bear to see it go to waste.

Seeing this yard, I said I wanted to grow some vegetables to eat.

Grandma Lin felt she should still ask, since they were newcomers and shouldn't break the rules.

Lin Yu didn't know either, but she could ask, "I'll go out and ask the neighbors."

Grandma Lin thought it was a good idea. Regardless of any regulations, if everyone else was planting it, then of course they could plant it too.

This is what is meant by "the law does not punish the masses".

Grandma Lin said, "I must say, Teacher Zhang is really good at teaching. I can even say such reasonable things now."

The effects of literacy classes are not immediately apparent, but rather accumulate over time, allowing them to gradually come to understand them in their daily lives.

It turns out they learned so much without even realizing it.

Lin Yu said, "That's because you guys are good at it. What about Aunt Hu? She just can't seem to learn it no matter what she tries."

Grandma Lin puffed out her chest: "I got first place in this exam, but I missed the next one..."

The two chatted as they walked, carrying some things, until they reached the neighboring yard.

Lin Yu stepped forward and knocked on the door. With a creak, an elderly woman opened the door.

Who are you?

She spoke Mandarin, not the local dialect of Haicheng, leading Lin Yu to guess that she was probably not a native of the area.

So he spoke to her in Mandarin: "Hello, ma'am, we rented the yard next door and just moved here."

The old woman took a look and recognized the elderly couple. She had heard recently that they were going to another city to help their son take care of his child.

So they've already rented out the house.

"So these are our new neighbors, hello."

The old lady spoke very politely.

Seeing that the other party was very nice, Grandma Lin stepped forward to greet her, saying, "Hello, old sister. This is something we brought. Please have a taste."

When the old woman saw that what she was given was a bag of dried mangoes, her eyes widened immediately, and she exclaimed, "These are mangoes?"

Grandma Lin nodded: "Yes, you've eaten it?"

The Lin family lived in a province in the far north, and had never tasted mangoes before.

The old lady said she was from the south and often ate mangoes when she was a child.

This kind of thing is rarely seen in Haicheng, so I was quite surprised to see the dried mangoes that Grandma Lin gave me.

Seeing that she liked it, Grandma Lin told her to accept the things: "They are all made in our own factory, I'm glad you like them."

The old woman waved her hand and said, "This is a rare find, it's too expensive."

Grandma Lin explained to her, "We run a shop here, so just think of it as helping us taste the food and see how it is?"

"Open a shop?"

"Yes, we..."

Grandma Lin talked on and on about her life, and Lin Yu couldn't get a word in edgewise; she just stood there listening.

Grandma Lin told the old lady about their origins and gave a detailed introduction to the specialty store.

The old lady gradually opened up and told them that her surname was Chen and that she came from the neighboring city of Guangzhou.

She later married and moved to Haicheng, but she never learned the Haicheng dialect, so she communicated in Mandarin.

The elderly woman stays at home to take care of her children, so she rarely goes outside.

I had no idea that such a shop had opened on the street.

Grandma Lin warmly invited her to come over for a visit when she had time.

It has to be said that both Grandma Lin and Lin Yu are sociable people. In just a short while, they chatted with the old lady next door and became like good sisters.

Only then did Grandma Lin reveal the reason for coming over to say hello.

When asked, she said, "I just thought it was a waste to leave the land in the yard uncultivated. We come from the countryside, and whenever we see empty land, we want to plant vegetables."

The old lady, as if she had found a like-minded friend, pulled her grandmother and grandson into her yard.

The layout of her home was similar to that of Lin Yu and the others.

It also has a large courtyard.

Aunt Chen cleared out the vacant land and planted a vegetable patch.

Several of them are already growing lush and green, and they look very nice.

Grandma Lin was delighted to see it and kept praising it.

Aunt Chen had probably never met someone so eloquent before, and she was overjoyed to hear it.

They even picked a large bunch of vegetables, insisting that they take them back to eat.

Grandma Lin declined a couple of times before accepting it.

Aunt Chen laughed and said, "The regulations don't say that we can't grow vegetables for our own consumption. Besides, the people in the neighborhood can't just barge into my house and pull up all my vegetables, can they? That would be a sin against heaven."

Aunt Chen has her own wisdom for survival.
