Grandma Lin took a liking to her granddaughter at first sight, and she was overjoyed to see the child so close to her.
Ignoring her son and grandson, he pulled Qiao Yu straight into the house.
"Xiaoyu, sit down. What would you like to eat? Grandma will make you a brown sugar egg soup."
As Grandma Lin spoke, she went to get the eggs and brown sugar. Qiao Yu had heard that these were to nourish Lin's eldest sister-in-law.
"Grandma, no need, keep it for my sister-in-law."
Grandma Lin was never biased. "It's alright, you can't eat much anyway, so I'll just make you a bowl. Your sister-in-law has some too."
She insisted on doing it, so Qiao Yu agreed.
He even squatted down to light a fire for her.
Seeing that there wasn't enough firewood, she went outside again; there was a lot of firewood in the yard that hadn't been chopped yet.
Lin Yuan watched her walk over and said, "Xiao Yu, don't you have enough firewood? I'll chop some."
Qiao Yu glanced at the axe over there. "Second Brother, can I try chopping it?"
Lin Yuan thought she just wanted to play around, so he handed her the axe, saying, "Here, you can play with it."
Qiao Yu took the axe and chopped.
With a "bang," she chopped the wood-chopping block in two!
Lin Yuan stared in disbelief, "You, you,"
"What's wrong? What happened?" Lin Laosan ran out when he heard the noise.
"Third Uncle, my sister is so strong! She chopped down the whole block!"
Lin Laosan was also stunned, "Girl, how do you have so much strength?"
Qiao Yu raised her chin and said, "I've been strong since I was a child. I can carry two bags of rice with one hand."
"My goodness, what kind of talent do I have to have such an outstanding daughter?"
Lin Laosan pinched the muscles in her arm. "Daughter, you'll have to protect your dad from now on. If your grandma hits me, you have to help me..."
"Help you with what?" Lin Laosan turned his head and saw his mother's deep gaze.
"It's nothing, Mom, look at my daughter, she's incredibly strong." Lin Laosan quickly changed the subject.
Grandma Lin walked over and touched Qiao Yu's hand, her eyes filled with longing.
“You are like your great-aunt, very strong. Your great-aunt was able to take on ten men at once. During the War of Resistance against Japan, she led the villagers and killed many enemies.”
Lin Laosan turned his head, "Mother, is that my aunt who sacrificed herself?"
Grandma Lin held her granddaughter's hand and said, "Yes, your father would be happy if he knew his granddaughter looks like your aunt."
"Hey, the old man is back! Come quick, come quick, look at our granddaughter, she's so strong!"
Just then, Old Man Lin walked in and heard his wife waving and calling to him, holding a little girl's hand.
Lin Laosan saw his usually unhurried father come running over like the wind, his eyes shining brightly.
"This is my granddaughter? She's very strong?"
Qiao Yu was still holding an axe. "Grandpa, I'm your granddaughter. I'm incredibly strong, just like my great-aunt. Let me show you."
She wanted to chop wood again, but felt that holding the axe would be cheating and wouldn't show how skilled she was, so she put it down.
After looking around, he walked over to Lin Yuan and asked,
"Second brother, how much do you weigh?"
"I weigh 130 pounds, so what?"
Qiao Yu pouted, "You're too light. But whatever, I'll make do."
Just as Lin Yuan was about to say that he was already quite heavy, his new sister grabbed his collar and lifted him up.
He was suspended in mid-air, completely unaware of what was happening.
Grandpa Lin said with a nostalgic look, "Like your great-aunt, she used to be able to lift me up."
Lin Yuan looked dazed as he was put down again. "Sis, you just lifted me up, right?"
Qiao Yu looked at him with concern, "Second brother, are you crazy? Do you have a fever?"
Grandma Lin gave him a disdainful look, then pulled her granddaughter toward the kitchen, saying, "Ignore that idiot, let's go eat brown sugar eggs."
Grandpa Lin happily followed his daughter-in-law and granddaughter.
Lin Laosan patted his nephew on the shoulder, "Little Niu Dan, from now on your third uncle will have a daughter to protect him, hehe."
"What do you mean, 'protected'? Third Brother, what are you talking about?"
Qiao Yu heard a gentle female voice, turned her head to look outside, and saw a beautiful woman walk in.
She looked to be around thirty years old, with an oval face, willow-leaf eyebrows, and a braid hanging over her right shoulder. She had a faint smile, and Qiao Yu could almost immediately recognize her as her biological mother.
The woman looked a lot like him, except that she was strong and powerful, with thin muscles and a rounder face, making her appear more youthful.
They have completely different temperaments, but their facial features are almost identical.
Shen Zhinian smiled and looked at her husband. Before he could answer, she keenly sensed a gaze and looked away.
She was a little girl with two braids and a round face, who looked a lot like me when I was little.
Her heart pounded wildly, something was flowing through her blood that made her eyes well up with tears.
"Who are you,"
Qiao Yu came out, her eyes fixed on her. "My name is Qiao Yu. Are you my mother?"
Shen Zhinian walked towards her and stopped a step away, looking at her carefully. "Yes, I am your mother. My name is Shen Zhinian."
Qiao Yu pouted, her voice trembling with tears, "Mommy, hug me."
She was like a little baby, begging her mother for the most basic needs.
Shen Zhinian felt a pang of pain in her heart and reached out to hug her.
"My child, my child has returned."
Tears streamed down her face as she stroked Qiao Yu's back with both hands, as if patting a baby to sleep.
Lin Laosan clenched his fists, his eyes welling up with tears.
He stepped forward, hugged the mother and daughter, and didn't say a word.
