Chapter 173 Gu Yunze Returns Home to Visit His Parents

Gu Yunze nodded and asked, "Aren't we a good match?"

The man hadn't expected him to ask that question, so he could only say, "They're a perfect match."

He had just glanced at them; the man was handsome and the woman was beautiful, they were indeed a good match.

He was just telling the truth, but to his surprise, Gu Yunze happily took out some melon seeds and peanuts for him to eat.

It's like handing out wedding candy.

The man thought to himself, "He must really like this girl."

She then said to him, "Hurry up and get married, she'll be your wife soon."

He nodded: "Soon, soon."

Once the mission is over, they can finally be together.

The train journey from Shancheng to Beicheng takes more than ten hours. People around Gu Yunze collapsed one after another, but he remained sitting upright.

Anyone could tell at a glance that he was a soldier, so no one dared to do anything in the carriage.

People around him feel very safe.

When he got off the train in Beicheng, those who were going on to the Northeast were still reluctant to part with him.

Gu Yunze bid farewell to the enthusiastic passengers and took a bus home after leaving the train station.

He hadn't been back to the compound for two years, so the old man guarding the gate didn't recognize him at first.

"Who are you......"

Gu Yunze respected the old man very much; he was a veteran who had come from the battlefield: "Grandpa Zhang, I am Gu Yunze."

Old Zhang looked at him again, then immediately came out of the guardhouse to see him, patted him on the shoulder and said, "It's Yunze, you're back. It's been two years since I last saw you. You've grown a lot."

Two years ago he looked a bit green, but now he's become much more mature and composed.

"Go home quickly, your mom must miss you a lot."

Gu Yunze walked along the familiar road, his pace quickening as he went, because he missed the old lady.

The Gu family lived in a two-story building with a courtyard in the middle of the compound.

Gu Yunze looked through the iron gate and saw a woman sitting in the courtyard sewing clothes.

Judging from its appearance, it was a military uniform, and Gu Yunze guessed it belonged to the old man.

The old lady was timid, and he didn't dare to scare her, so he stood at the door and called out, "Mom, I'm home."

The woman's hair was half white. Although Gu Yunze called her a little old lady, she actually looked quite young. She was rather thin, and her face, especially between her eyebrows, had deep wrinkles that showed signs of past sorrows.

But now the expression on her face is one of happiness and surprise.

"Yunze is back? Quick, quick, let Mom see him."

Gu Yunze walked in, and Li Huizhu looked at him with tears in her eyes: "You've grown taller, haven't you? You've also gotten tanned and thinner."

There's a kind of thinness that only your mom thinks you're thin. Actually, Gu Yunze needs to train and needs to supplement his nutrition, so he's never hungry.

On the contrary, because of the increased exercise, my muscles have become much larger.

Li Huizhu pulled him along happily: "What do you want to eat? Mom will make it."

Gu Yunze led her to sit down: "Don't bother, I'm not hungry. I just want to take a shower and get some sleep; I've been on the train for a long time."

He's made of iron; even if he sits for more than ten hours without moving, he'll get tired.

He relaxed once he got home.

Hearing that he wanted to take a shower and rest, Li Huizhu finally felt that she had something to do.

She happily busied herself with various tasks, such as boiling water and fetching clothes for him.

Gu Yunze was in charge of starting the fire and boiling the water.

After taking a shower and lying in bed, I fell asleep almost instantly.

Li Huizhu hurriedly grabbed her vegetable basket to go out and buy groceries. As she reached the gate of the courtyard, she heard the sound of a jeep.

Sure enough, the car soon stopped in front of them, and an old man in military uniform got out.

"Huizhu, where are you going?"

Li Huizhu quickly pulled him back into the car: "Old Gu, our son is back. Hurry up, let's go buy some groceries."

I don't know if the state-run vegetable market still has any vegetables left, so taking a bus will be faster.

When Gu Henglin heard that his son had returned, he knew it was Gu Yunze. Although he had two sons and a daughter, only Gu Yunze could make Li Huizhu so happy.

The two children born to the first wife are both idiots, nothing special.

So he played along, saying, "Yunze is back? I heard a while ago that he applied to visit his family, but it wasn't confirmed yet, so I didn't tell you, afraid you'd be disappointed."

Li Huizhu disagreed, saying, "You should tell me then so I can prepare in advance. Even if you can't come back, we can still eat on our own."

"Yes, yes, you're the eldest in our family, I'll listen to you from now on."

Li Huizhu rolled her eyes: "That old man is just all talk."

He was quite chauvinistic when he was young, but now that he's older, he's become more eloquent.

It was afternoon, and the state-run vegetable market closed at four o'clock. By the time they arrived, there wasn't much left.

Li Huizhu bought some leftover cabbages and then saw some fish that didn't require coupons, so she bought those as well.

When the elderly couple returned home, Gu Yunze had already woken up and was training on the horizontal bar downstairs.

He was wearing a vest, and when he lifted and lowered his body, his muscles were incredibly powerful, which made Commander Xu, who was passing by, envious.

Gu Yunze talked to him while exercising, and they discussed military matters.

Upon seeing Gu Henglin and his wife return, Commander Xu knew it was inappropriate to disturb them, so he greeted them and left.

When Gu Yunze saw his father, whose hair had turned gray, he simply greeted him with a curt "Dad."

He walked over again, took the groceries from their hands, and went into the kitchen.

Li Huizhu felt that the father and son had been acting strangely ever since the child grew up. In fact, they both cared about each other, but they never said a word to each other. They were both just as stubborn.

Li Huizhu cooked lunch, while Gu Yunze did everything else: cleaning fish, starting the fire, and washing vegetables.

Sometimes Li Huizhu felt that she gave birth to this child to repay a debt of gratitude; she didn't know what her life would be like without Gu Yunze.

Gu Yunze had no idea what his mother was thinking; she kicked him out as soon as she started cooking.

"Go talk to your dad. He misses you too, he just doesn't say it."

Gu Yunze sat down opposite Gu Henglin and looked at him.

The old man is sixty-eight years old, with gray hair, but he hasn't retired yet and looks quite healthy.

The father and son didn't have much else to talk about, so the first thing they said was, "I heard you went out on a mission?"

"Yes, a secret operation." This means it can't even be revealed to one's own father.

"Yes." Gu Henglin understood; this was a soldier's duty.

They then started talking about military matters. The two were in the same system, and although they were soldiers from different regions, they still had a lot in common.

They chatted until Li Huizhu called them to dinner, at which point they finally ended their conversation.

Li Huizhu stood in the restaurant and listened for a while, and found that the father and son did not talk about any family matters, but only about the army.

It's like reporting to a superior.

She shook her head and said during the meal, "You two are father and son, so let's not talk about the superior-subordinate relationship, let's talk about other things."

Gu Yunze couldn't think of any other casual conversation he could have with his father.

As the initial awkwardness faded, he asked Gu Henglin, "Dad, is there anything you want to say to me?"
