Chapter 7 Marriage Certificate



She looked up at Howard.

His eyes were open and honest, carrying the straightforwardness of a soldier and a kind of...clumsy sincerity. There was no scheming, no sleazy, only an almost stubborn sense of responsibility.

He did all this to fulfill his promise to his comrades, and also to... protect her, the "rescued child".

In this completely unfamiliar and perilous world, this soldier with clear eyes seems to be the only piece of driftwood she can grasp at the moment.

She will live well. Not in place of anyone else, but for herself. If Mingzhao's family isn't doing well, she will disown them. If they are, she will repay them appropriately, but she won't actively seek them out.

A contract it is. At least it's better than a cold detention center and endless interrogations.

She neither nodded nor shook her head.

He silently picked up the red marriage certificate and flipped it open. Inside was a long passage of text, followed by what appeared to be two names: Huo Hua and Ming Zhao. The date was yesterday.

She looked at the two names carefully, then folded the marriage certificate and put it in the pocket of her hospital gown.

Then, she threw off the covers, got out of bed somewhat slowly but firmly, and picked up the military green canvas bag that Howard had brought.

The meaning is clear: I'll go with you.

As Howard watched her series of silent movements, his heart, which had been hanging in suspense, finally eased a little.

He quickly stood up: "There's not much stuff, just two sets of clothes and toiletries for you. We can get anything else when we get to the family compound."
