The smell of disinfectant was still strong, but the atmosphere in the bright ward was much more relaxed.
His injuries had mostly healed, and he was already able to get out of bed and move around. Gong Zhu was helping him pack his simple belongings, preparing him for discharge from the hospital.
"Mingzhao, thank you so much for coming all this way to pick me up."
Minglang sat on the edge of the bed, looking at his cousin who stood by the window, quiet as a painting. He had a cheerful smile on his face, but deep in his eyes was a deep heartache.
Gongzhu had already told Mingzhao about the abuse he had suffered, how he had been exploited by his adoptive parents, and his current situation of living under someone else's roof.
Every time he saw Mingzhao's overly calm face, as if it had isolated all emotions, and the faint scar on his forehead, his heart ached as if it were being pricked by needles.
Mingzhao turned around at the sound and nodded to Minglang in response. Her gaze swept over Minglang's face, which had regained some color, confirming that he was in relatively good condition.
Gong Zhu finished packing her things and smiled, "Battalion Commander Minglang, all the formalities are done. Mingzhao, shall we go?"
The three of them walked out of the ward together. Although Minglang still needed to use crutches, his steps were much more steady.
The sunlight streamed into the hospital corridor, making it feel warm and cozy.
Minglang looked at Mingzhao, who was walking beside him, always half a step behind and silent. He looked at her pretty little dress and the shadows cast by her lowered eyelashes under her eyes. The feeling of heartache grew stronger.
This was supposed to be the little princess that the Ming family cherished and raised! But now...
"Zhaozhao," Minglang stopped, his voice unconsciously softening, carrying a cautious probing and an overwhelming tenderness.
Mingzhao also stopped, raised her head, and looked at him with clear eyes, her expression questioning.
Minglang took a deep breath, looked into Mingzhao's eyes, and said with utmost seriousness and solemnity, "Come home with me, brother."
A very subtle hint of confusion flashed across Mingzhao's eyes.
Minglang thought she hadn't understood, so he quickly added, his tone even more urgent and distressed: "Brother means... divorce Commander Huo!"
