Her lips were pressed together until they were white, as if she was trying to make sense of something.
The warmth of Howard's palm traveled through the back of his hand, carrying a strange calming effect.
She glanced into Howard's steady eyes, then looked down at the brand-new sketchbook in her arms, and her tense body finally relaxed a little.
She slowly loosened her grip on Howard's clothes, her fingertips turning slightly white from the force.
“…Hmm.” She responded softly, clutching her notebook, like a startled little animal retreating back to its den, silently retreating into the dimly lit depths of the main room.
She didn't immediately touch the new picture book. Instead, she hugged her knees, curled up in the brand-new rattan rocking chair, and silently cast her gaze through the open door of the main room toward the dusty construction site in the corner of the courtyard.
Howard watched her retreating figure, a deep look flashing across his eyes.
He turned around, his face now regaining its usual cold and composed demeanor. His figure moved among the workers, seemingly supervising them, but his eyes were like the most sophisticated radar, constantly watching the subtle movements of each worker and their interactions.
