Chapter 29 Attempt to Steal a Chicken Backfires
"Chief Engineer, I want to report that Director Jiang Zheng and his apprentice, Wei Laicheng, the captain of the transportation team, have been abusing their positions for personal gain and undermining socialism."
The moment the so-called witnesses entered, they dropped a bombshell.
Han Cheng had been waiting for this moment, and as soon as the man finished speaking, he couldn't wait to speak up.
"Chief Engineer, Jiang Zheng's actions are a disgrace to our transportation team."
I demand that Jiang Zheng and Wei Laicheng be dismissed immediately, to demonstrate that our transport team will absolutely not associate with these corrupt officials.
Han Cheng spoke in a grand and dignified manner, but no one could fail to hear the smugness and excitement in his tone.
"Deputy Director Han, I'll ask you two questions before you convict me."
Jiang Zheng didn't really take these so-called witnesses seriously.
What puzzled him was when he had offended his good neighbor, who would then slander him so vehemently.
"Fu Liqiang, what makes you think I've undermined socialism? Even if you're a witness, you can't convict me based on nothing but your words!"
Jiang Zheng sat in his chair, watching Fu Liqiang with a leisurely air.
Upon hearing this, Fu Liqiang became even more agitated, his face flushed with excitement, and his tone was full of righteous indignation.
"Chief Engineer, I can guarantee that what I said is true. I am Jiang Zheng's neighbor, and I know his family situation very well."
Jiang Zheng's wife doesn't work, and Jiang Zheng is the only one in the Jiang family who earns a salary. With Jiang Zheng's salary, he simply cannot afford the basic expenses of the Jiang family.
For example, last night, the Jiang family had roasted a whole lamb. I saw it clearly. His apprentice unloaded half a lamb from the car. Putting aside how much that would cost, that much lamb must have required a lot of ration coupons. Based on Jiang Zheng's monthly salary, how could they possibly have that many meat coupons?
I can't think of any other reason besides undermining socialism.
When it comes to roasted whole lamb, Fu Liqiang is absolutely furious.
"And Jiang Zheng's wife's clothes are basically different all year round, and most of them are styles that we poor people have never seen before."
Director Han's wife, on the other hand, dresses simply and elegantly every day. Director Han, however, might not eat meat for months at a time. Director Han and Jiang Zheng have similar positions and salaries, so why is their lifestyle so different? There must be something wrong here.
After Fu Liqiang finished speaking, he gave Han Cheng a look.
To his surprise, despite his fervent flattery, Director Han's expression grew increasingly unpleasant.
"Hahaha, you judge me and my apprentice to be undermining socialism based on this?"
Being slandered like this should have been infuriating, but after hearing Fu Liqiang's reasons, Jiang Zheng was not angry at all; on the contrary, he was quite amused.
The chief engineer, who was sitting here preparing to act as referee, had a complicated expression upon hearing this reason.
Is it possible that the money Jiang Zheng spent wasn't his salary?
If I were you, I would investigate someone's background before framing them, and I wouldn't be in this embarrassing situation now.
When Fu Liqiang heard the chief engineer say this, he knew what was going on, and his face turned pale instantly.
After the chief engineer finished speaking to Fu Liqiang, he changed the subject and began to criticize Hancheng.
"Hancheng, in the future, if you haven't figured something out, go and get it sorted out first. Don't end up looking like a clown."
If your family is poor, blame your parents. What does that have to do with Jiang Zheng?
If it happens again, you'll have to deal with it yourself.
"You two, get out!"
Seeing that the chief engineer was going to let the two off, Jiang Zheng objected.
"Chief Engineer, this outcome isn't quite right. They slandered others like that, yet they didn't face any punishment whatsoever. I don't mind being wronged, but I'm worried that other colleagues will follow suit. They'll spend their days away from production and engaging in all this backstabbing and scheming. If that happens, what future does our transportation team have?"
The two people who had already reached the door felt their hearts sink upon hearing this.
That's it, their thoughts are now remarkably in sync.
"Chief Engineer, this has nothing to do with me. It was all Director Han's fault. Director Han forced me to say it. He threatened to make things difficult for me, so I had no choice but to do it."
"You're talking nonsense. It's clearly because you can't stand Jiang Zheng that you came to me."
It is said that couples are like birds in the same forest; when disaster strikes, they fly away separately. If this is true even for couples, how much more so for these two who are just superficial friends?
"What are you two arguing about? It takes two to tango; you're both at fault. Han Cheng, as Director Jiang's deputy, you should be assisting him, but I now believe you're not up to the task. Logistics is a quiet job, which suits someone with your ulterior motives."
And Fu Liqiang, I think you're just bored, always thinking about a lot of things. Here's what we'll do: we haven't found anyone to clean the toilets for our transport team yet. You can do that for now, and if you do a good job, I'll transfer you back.”
From a leader to an ordinary worker in the logistics department, from a senior technician to a cleaner, it was a tremendous blow to these two people who thought highly of themselves.
The saying "trying to steal a chicken but losing the rice instead" perfectly describes these two.
Jiang Zheng was fairly satisfied with the outcome.
However, the fact that this matter has been brought up indicates that the current situation is indeed tense.
Things outside of Cheng should be put on hold for now.
...
"My God, look at the bride's dowry."
"My goodness, the yard is almost overflowing with these, tsk tsk, seven quilts, they really spared no expense."
"Hey, what's that big thing over there?"
"You don't know this, do you? My husband told me that it's called a refrigerator. The meat and vegetables we buy won't spoil easily if we put them in there."
The crowd, who had initially found the object quite unusual, dispersed upon hearing this.
"I thought it was something important. Why would I buy such a useless thing? The vegetables are in the garden, and we can pick them whenever we want to eat them. As for meat, my family can't afford it. Even if we did buy some, there wouldn't be enough meat for our whole family."
Where should we store it?
Seeing that the desired effect had not been achieved, the old lady became anxious and hurriedly tried to remedy the situation.
"The bride's family also gave her a TV as part of her dowry. Do you know what a TV is? It's one of those machines that can display pictures on the screen. It was very expensive. My sister-in-law's family bought one, and we listened to her brag about it for a year."
Just as the old lady wished, gasps of surprise erupted from the crowd.
"My God, who is this bride? She's a good-for-nothing, yet her family gave her such a wonderful dowry. How much money must have been spent!"
"What do you know? The bride's home is far away, but her aunt lives here. All these nice things are part of her dowry from her aunt. I heard that this bride is getting married from her aunt's house today."
Her aunt's family lives in our HA city area. Lai Cheng married such a golden phoenix; it seems the Wei family is about to prosper.
While the villagers in the courtyard were having a lively discussion, the atmosphere inside the new house was freezing cold for the Wei family.
"Mom, you're being too biased! Look at the dowry for my third brother's wife, and then look at what happened to my second brother's family. We're all daughters-in-law of the Wei family, you can't treat us differently like this!"
