Chapter 68 Rongcheng Police Station
"Zhan Yangfeng, someone has come to see you."
Compared to Wei Laicheng, who was in the interrogation room, Xiao Feng was caught red-handed for arson and was immediately sent to prison.
Upon seeing the person who had arrived, Zhan Yangfeng suddenly broke into a big smile.
This smile was different from his previous timid and hesitant demeanor; it was generous and sunny, finally showing some signs of youthful energy.
"You've arrived."
This sentence is a bit like meeting an old friend again; a sense of familiarity washes over you.
When Wei Laicheng arrived, he was furious, but when he saw Zhan Yangfeng like this, for some reason, his anger subsided considerably.
"I know what you want to ask me, but don't rush me. Let me tell you a story first, and then I'll tell you the answer."
"Once upon a time, there was a child who was different from other children because he did not have a father."
His father died in a man-made disaster when he was three years old.
He left behind his frail mother and his naive son.
As he grew up, his family became even poorer, and his mother's illness was like an insurmountable mountain, trapping him inside.
Children in rural areas, especially those like him who have no support, are hardly able to afford such expensive medical bills.
However, he was lucky; he met a benefactor.
He was a young man not much older than him who taught him to read, taught him to drive, and helped him get into the transport team that everyone wanted to join.
Logically, he should thank this person, but he didn't.
He felt no gratitude towards him, only a strange sense of hatred.
Why is it that even though that young man has family members who hold him back, he still lives so carefree?
He just happened to meet a good master. If he had been the one taken as an apprentice, he would definitely have done better than him.
Thus, jealousy and resentment filled his heart, but his conscience restrained them.
They achieved a delicate balance, but this balance was too fragile.
One day, someone approached him and asked if he was truly content to spend his entire life as someone else's follower. Did he want to take on responsibilities and become a leader himself?
Those words had already stirred up a storm in his heart, and his mother's illness ultimately became the last straw that broke the camel's back.
He did bad things; he's a bad person, but he didn't want to be a bad person before.
As Zhan Yangfeng finished telling the story, a tear fell onto the table in front of him.
All three people present understood who he was referring to.
"Xiaofeng, have I ever told you this: don't treat others like fools?"
Do you feel wronged? Do you think I should understand you and tell you that you did nothing wrong, and that it's all the fault of life and fate?
I'm kind, but not stupid. Besides, I don't think I'll need it. Gangzi just got a call saying your mother passed away.
"They're gone? Good thing they're gone!"
"You can leave now. I've told you everything I needed to. Just consider it as sponsoring a heartless bastard."
Zhan Yangfeng turned his face away, facing the wall, and said to Wei Laicheng.
He had initially thought this person was the kindest and that he could help take care of his mother, but now that his mother was gone, he no longer needed to deal with him.
My mother is gone!
Zhan Yangfeng's eyes welled up with tears.
"Zhan Yangfeng, jealousy is not your fault. You just misspoke. Conscience? You don't have that. Using your mother's illness as an excuse, you really are a filial son."
You curse your mother for your own selfish desires? Do you even have a conscience?
Wei Laicheng truly felt sorry for Zhan's mother; the child she raised with so much care and effort had turned out so badly.
He himself felt sorry for Zhan Yangfeng and his widowed mother, and thought he could help them however little he could. He had been secretly visiting Zhan's mother all along.
As far as he knew, Zhan's mother's health had gradually improved since he started supporting Zhan Yangfeng.
After he finished speaking, he himself found it ridiculous that he had gone to such lengths for such a thing.
As Wei Laicheng walked out of the police station and stood under the big locust tree, he felt a little stifled.
"Honey, do you think I'm stupid?"
Wei Laicheng was somewhat saddened; the kindness he showed in his youth had somehow nurtured such a person.
"Who said you're stupid? You're a good person. He's the one who's bad. He took advantage of your kindness. He's the one who should feel guilty. What are you reflecting on?"
Reject self-pity; start with yourself.
...
"Honey, what do you think the garment factory manager means by this? Is he trying to curry favor with us? Why? We don't have anything he could possibly want from us."
Looking at Song Zhicheng, who was grinning like an idiot across the table, Wei Laicheng whispered to his wife.
Jiang Xixi just smiled. Just because they didn't have it doesn't mean the people behind them didn't!
If I'm not mistaken, this person is probably after the family behind my teacher's wife.
"Everyone has been eating, but I haven't had time to cook. I'm here today to show my hospitality. These dishes are the signature dishes of our Rongcheng State-run Restaurant. Please try them."
As Song Zhicheng spoke, he stood up, picked up his chopsticks, and prepared to serve food to the two of them.
Wei Laicheng quickly stopped him.
"Director Song, let's not beat around the bush. Your secretary conveyed your message quite clearly when she came to the guesthouse. I just want to ask, why did your attitude change so quickly?"
Song Zhicheng, who was picking up food with his chopsticks, didn't know where to put them for a long time. After hearing Wei Laicheng's words, he cursed inwardly.
Is this something that can be asked openly?
"Captain Wei, what are you saying? Haven't I always maintained this friendly attitude?"
Seeing Wei Laicheng's expression that said, "I'll just watch you keep pretending," Song Zhicheng finally couldn't continue.
I might as well just give up.
So what if Madam doesn't complete her task? At worst, she'll get scolded when she gets back, and then they'll have a cold war for a while. Besides, Madam said "absolutely," she didn't force her...
Factory Director Song tried his best to comfort himself.
"Captain Wei, you're exaggerating. I was wrong before, and I'm punishing myself with three drinks. I wonder if Captain Wei could give me some face and we could become friends?"
I'm not the same person I am now.
Back then, I had no idea you had such an impressive background.
It still didn't work. His wife's emotional abuse was too much for him to handle.
Seeing that the two people in front of him remained unmoved, Director Song cursed inwardly.
Those two little rascals have quite the tempers.
"Captain Wei, I was also deceived at the time. I don't know if you know about my relationship with Director Li of your Huai'an Garment Factory. We are enemies. At the time, I thought you were sent by him to provoke me."
Moreover, at that time, our garment factory was carrying out a project assigned by higher authorities, which was related to the development of our factory. When those people from your transportation team came in, they started fighting. One of them even went and burned down my warehouse. How could I not be anxious?
In my haste, I didn't understand the situation and wrongly accused you. That was definitely my fault.
Seeing that the couple finally showed some emotion, Song Zhicheng was overjoyed. He gritted his teeth and stomped his foot.
"If Captain Wei agrees to be our clothing representative, how about we give him 10% of the profits from our business on the Rongcheng-Huai'an route?"
Jiang Xixi almost couldn't suppress the corners of her mouth.
That's one-tenth of the Rongcheng Garment Factory's profits!
