After school, Gou Dan skipped and hopped happily all the way home, excitedly thinking about going to the county tomorrow.
Da Niu, who was walking next to him, kept his head down and didn't say a word.
Dog Egg walked quite a distance before realizing that Da Niu hadn't followed, and finally noticed his unusual behavior.
He quickly ran back and poked Da Niu's arm: "Da Niu, what's wrong?"
Normally, when the two of them walk home from school, Da Niu is even more energetic than Gou Dan, and he can't stop talking the whole way. Today, the quietness is really strange.
Da Niu looked up at Gou Dan and pouted, "Gou Dan, I failed my exam. My mom said if I fail this exam, she'll treat me to bamboo shoot stir-fried with pork."
He got 70 points in math but only 40 points in Chinese this time; he's definitely going to get a beating.
Gou Dan looked at Da Niu in surprise, and a sense of guilt immediately welled up in his heart. He was so happy when he heard his score in class that he didn't pay attention to Teacher Qi announcing the scores of the students behind him, so he didn't know that Da Niu had failed the exam.
"Then, what should we do?" Gou Dan was a little anxious; he didn't want Da Niu to get beaten up.
Da Niu's mom is really heavy-handed. Every time Da Niu is naughty and gets a beating, his bottom will be swollen for several days. She's much harsher than his mom.
Da Niu shook his head. He didn't know either. He didn't dare go home now, because going home meant he would get beaten up.
Gou Dan racked his brains, and suddenly a brilliant idea struck him: "How about I give you my Chinese test paper, and you change it to your own name? That way your mom won't beat you."
Gou Dan figured that since his sister only said he needed to get 100 points in math and didn't specify how many points he needed in Chinese, he could still go to the county school.
Upon hearing what he said, Da Niu immediately waved his hand in refusal: "How can that be? You'll get a beating when you get home."
"No way, I got 100 on my math test, my mom definitely wouldn't have the heart to beat me," Gou Dan said confidently.
Da Niu looked at Gou Dan with a touched expression: "Gou Dan, you're so kind."
Neither of the two little ones thought about what would happen if they were found out; they were only thinking about helping Da Niu avoid that beating.
That evening, when Xia Qingqing got home from work, she saw Gou Dan running towards her excitedly with his test paper in hand: "Sister, I got 100 on my math test! You promised to take me to the city, so you have to keep your word."
"Oh, don't worry, I won't lie to you," Xia Qingqing caught her younger brother, took the test paper from his hand and looked at it carefully, and found that it was indeed 100 points.
Zhang Hongyan and Xia Heping also happily came over to look at Gou Dan's score. Seeing the bright red 100, Zhang Hongyan looked at her son with satisfaction: "That's really good. You're just like your sister in that respect. You both have smart brains."
"Where is your Chinese test paper? What score did you get? Why don't you show it to me?"
Dog Egg's bright smile froze on his face, and he replied in a low voice, "I didn't do very well on the Chinese test."
“It’s alright. Getting 100 points in Chinese is indeed harder. Let me see it,” Zhang Hongyan said, holding out her hand and waiting for her son’s test paper.
Dog Egg slowly pulled a crumpled test paper out of his schoolbag, with a big 40 on it.
Zhang Hongyan was immediately furious: "40 points? How come you only got such a low score in Chinese? Your sister used to get perfect scores in both subjects."
As Zhang Hongyan was saying this, she started looking around for a stick. Gou Dan, somewhat frightened, hid behind his sister and cried out, "Sister, save me!"
Xia Qingqing was a little puzzled. Although Gou Dan's Chinese was not as good as his math, it shouldn't be enough to score 40 points.
"Mom, let me see the test paper," Xia Qingqing said, taking the test paper from Zhang Hongyan. She smiled knowingly when she saw the handwriting on it.
Then he took Gou Dan back to his room alone.
"Tell me, this isn't your test paper, is it? Why are you lying?" Xia Qingqing placed the test paper on the table, staring intently at Gou Dan.
Dog Egg panicked when his sister looked at him: "This, this is Da Niu's test paper. He failed the test and will be beaten."
"I just wanted to help him. I got 98 points on the test. Sister, can you please not scold me?"
Seeing her younger brother trembling, Xia Qingqing's expression softened a bit: "Your idea of helping him is right, but this isn't the way to do it. Do you think Da Niu's mother can't see through your little tricks?"
Dog Egg looked at his sister, somewhat bewildered: "Then what should we do? I want to help Da Niu."
“You can teach him how to do the problems and study with him. That’s how you help him,” Xia Qingqing said gently, patiently explaining to Gou Dan.
Gou Dan understood and nodded seriously: "Then starting tomorrow, I will study with Da Niu to help him improve his grades, so he won't get beaten up anymore."
Xia Qingqing looked at him helplessly. Did this little brat think that studying was just to avoid getting beaten up? Oh well, he probably wouldn't understand even if she explained the big principles to him.
"Sis, could you please go and talk to Mom for me and ask her not to beat me?" Gou Dan pleaded pitifully, grabbing Xia Qingqing's hand.
Xia Qingqing nodded: "I will talk to her. You can't do this again next time."
Dog Egg quickly agreed, feeling a huge sense of relief as he escaped a disaster.
At this time, the Da Niu family.
When Da Niu's mother got off work, the first thing she did when she saw her son was to ask about his test scores. Da Niu nervously handed his mother the two test papers.
"Wow, 70 in math and 98 in Chinese! My son did really well this time. Keep up the good work next time, okay?" Mom smiled with satisfaction as she saw the bright red scores on the test paper.
"Okay," Da Niu said, relieved to see that his mother hadn't noticed he'd changed the report card.
Looking at her quiet son, Da Niu's mother felt that something was wrong; this was not like her son at all.
This is a pretty good result. Shouldn't he be clamoring for a reward? Why is he so quiet? Something's fishy going on.
Da Niu's mother picked up the test paper on the table again and looked at it carefully. She first glanced at the score and found no signs of alteration.
Then I looked at each question one by one, worried that the teacher had made a mistake in grading.
Upon looking at Da Niu, his mother immediately noticed something: "Da Niu, how come your handwriting has suddenly become so good?"
She had seen Da Niu's homework before; his handwriting was messy, like a dog crawling on the ground.
The handwriting on this test paper isn't exactly beautiful, but at least it's neat and tidy. Da Niu's mother doesn't believe her son's handwriting has improved so quickly.
Thinking of something, she flipped over the exam paper and glanced at the place where her name was, and sure enough, she found traces of alteration.
He slammed his fist on the table in anger: "Tell me the truth, whose exam paper is this?"
Da Niu was surprised that his mother had such sharp eyes and immediately panicked, stammering, "It was Gou Dan's, he swapped the test papers with me."
Da Niu's mother glared at him, got up without saying a word, found her usual stick, grabbed Da Niu, and started beating him: "I'll teach you to lie! I'll teach you to lie!"
"Waaaa~ Waaaaa".
The pitiful cries of the oxen echoed from the courtyard.
