Chapter 227 Passionate and Concerned for the Country and Its People

In the brightly lit room, a solitary lamp was lit.

The dim light finally made Guan Yuxi open her eyes. It was an extremely simple room.

The two large wooden cabinets in the corner of the room and the brown medicine bottle lamps on them gave her a sense of déjà vu.

There was a bed next to the cabinet, and an unusually tall old man was curled up on the bed.

However, his face was extremely thin, not to the point of being skin and bones, but his cheekbones were high and prominent, making him almost unrecognizable from the man in the pictorial.

Guan Yuxi's nose tingled, and tears streamed down her face.

"What's wrong? Am I that scary?"

The old man slipped on his shoes, got out of bed, sat on the edge of the bed, and smiled at her.

He casually picked up some fruit from the cabinet and said, "Here, have some fruit."

Guan Yuxi sat down on the bench by the counter, took the orange from his hand, peeled it carefully, gave him four segments, counted the remaining segments, gave him four more segments, and kept only three segments for herself.

The old man was taken aback, then his smile widened even further.

"Your grandfather told you those old stories, didn't he? What did he say about me?"

Guan Yuxi shook her head, eating an orange as she said, "He doesn't say it often."

They often talked about eating oranges, drinking alcohol, and stealing rice crackers.

He wouldn't let me touch his gun, saying that girls should be quiet and well-behaved, reading and studying.

Find a good job, marry a good man, have a few children, and your life will be perfect.

Her voice was muffled, and her tone revealed a hint of melancholy. She couldn't even eat the orange.

"Unfortunately, I didn't listen to him. I neither liked reading and studying nor did I accept the job he arranged for me."

Perhaps he was utterly disappointed in me, because in the end he didn't even want me anymore...

Guan Yuxi could no longer contain her emotions and hugged the old man's arm, crying bitterly.

Warm tears soaked through his military green sweater and dampened his gray cotton undershirt.

The old man patted her on the shoulder, "You listened to him too, you married a good man!"

Guan Yuxi: "......"

I couldn't cry anymore, and I couldn't help but laugh through my tears.

"You're just like my grandpa! You make a joke and then take it so seriously that it makes people cry!"

She sobbed and couldn't help but roll her eyes at him.

The old man stood up, gently hugged her, then let go, sighed, and said, "I'm sorry!"

I learned about your grandfather's matter too late. If I had known earlier, perhaps...

"You don't need to blame yourself, he did it voluntarily!"

Guan Yuxi opened her purse and handed him a thick envelope. "This is something my grandfather left me."

Before the accident, he had a premonition that he had many ways to save himself.

In the end, however, he chose to lead the clues toward the mountainside.

It was very close to the cowshed, where Old Liu and Old Yang lived.

Previously, Guan Yuxi thought that her grandfather originally went home to get a gun, but then went there because he was afraid of bringing danger to her and Leng Lie.

He was posthumously recognized as a martyr.

She learned the truth when she visited the two elderly people again before coming to Kyoto.

It was all because the old man in front of me had jokingly said that Grandpa Guan was his observer among the people, and that he wanted him to take some time to visit me in Kyoto.

As a result, the group of people who blindly followed Fang Laoma's lead became anxious.

Fearing that Grandpa Guan's words would influence the old man's decision, they resorted to desperate measures and killed him.

Unexpectedly, Grandpa Guan actually wrote letter after letter addressing the various problems and reflections that had arisen over the years, which he left with Grandpa Liu and Grandpa Yang.

The old man silently read the letter, his gaze solemn.

Page after page, each letter was short, without salutations, signatures, or greetings; they were more like diaries than letters.

After a long while, he finished reading the letters and stared at them blankly. "What do you think?"

Is he asking for her opinion?

Guan Yuxi's blood boiled instantly, every pore of her body filled with immense power, ready to be unleashed!

Even though I know he might just be asking the question out of habit.

She still wanted to seize this opportunity, which was even rarer than the sun hitting the earth.

She clenched her fingers and mustered her courage to say, "What one sees and thinks when in a high position is definitely different from what one sees and thinks when far from the court. A heart that cares about the country and its people deserves respect and admiration. However, what truly benefits the country and its people is not something that one person or a small group of people can decide!"

The lights suddenly came on.

The dim oil lamp became a silhouette in her eyes.

However, the nervous Guan Yuxi seemed completely oblivious to this change, and simply stared cautiously at the old man.

The old man's originally strong facial features gradually softened.

He smiled, seemingly pleased with her insight, yet also somewhat dismissive.

"Then tell me, what truly benefits the country and its people?"

Guan Yuxi's hands were already sweating, and even her forehead was covered in beads of sweat.

However, she couldn't care less about anything else.

At this moment, all she could think about was the old man in front of her.

From childhood to adulthood, all the photos and magazines of him she had seen overlapped with his image.

He was spirited and ambitious, incredibly wise, commanding and charismatic, and approachable...

Her eyes sparkled, and the words she had rehearsed in her mind many times finally came out:

"The invention of the antimalarial drug artemisinin has led to the construction of countless reservoirs and improved seeds, which is beneficial to the country and its people."

The construction of a comprehensive transportation network benefits the country and its people.
