Chapter 3 Rabies Attack

When she locked the door and came out wearing a straw hat, the neighbors on both sides were still eating. Many women and children were sitting under the camphor tree on the first floor with their bowls in hand, eating in the cool air.

Seeing her out at noon, the neighbor next door said, "Yun Huaying, what was your mother doing at home just now?"

"She was bitten by a mad dog and developed rabies."

Yun Huaying replied, looked around with a dull expression, and did not greet them enthusiastically.

She usually keeps her head down, looking honest and cowardly. People rarely see her smile, let alone hear her say harsh words.

So, when she suddenly replied with this sentence, everyone present was stunned and no one reacted at once.

Yun Huaying didn't plan to say much to them. She still had a lot of things to do this afternoon and didn't want to waste time here, so she just strode away.

The person who had been talking to her before also realized what was happening and called out to her, "Yun Huaying, where are you going? I heard your mom scolding you earlier, saying she signed you up to go to the countryside. Is that true?"

Speaking of this, Yun Huaying stopped in her tracks and said expressionlessly, "Really? It was Fang Xue who was supposed to go to the countryside. She put my name on the list."

“They are really…”

People are simple and honest these days, and most people can't stand Li Hongxia's behavior, but every family has its own problems, so they don't want to interfere in the Fang family's affairs.

Yun Huaying told them about this matter, not intending to ask them to help her stand up for justice, but just told them the facts to prevent them from making irresponsible remarks.

Watching her thin back as she left, a gray-haired old woman sighed, "Fang Ziqiang and his wife are such unkind and wicked people. Li Hongxia dared to bully her like this. It's obvious that Fang Ziqiang condoned it. Aren't they afraid that the Yun family will seek revenge on them after they die?"

"Ah, what a world this is." Another woman sighed and glanced at Yun Huaying's house on the second floor. She whispered, "Well, let's not talk about their family's affairs. It's useless for us outsiders to say more."

Yun Huaying walked very fast. Relying on her memory, she had already taken a shortcut to the registration point for educated youth, which was less than a mile away from the family quarters.

Two people, one man and one woman, wearing red armbands on their left arms, sat at a simple desk. When she came in, the female comrade in charge of registration asked, "Comrade, are you here to sign up to go to the countryside?"

"Yes."

Yun Huaying wore a common straw hat on her head and deliberately let her hair down a little to cover up her outstanding appearance.

Seeing them looking up at him, he spoke without a trace of nervousness, "Comrades, I'm here today to respond to the country's call to support rural development. My parents are both working, and there are four of us siblings. My youngest brother is only fifteen, and my three sisters have all reached the age and registration requirements. Our parents have high moral standards and asked us three sisters to go to the countryside to work and set a good example for my younger brother."

"My eldest sister signed up a few days ago, so I'm here to sign up for myself. I also have a twin sister, and she's going to a banquet today. She asked me to bring her documents and sign up on her behalf. Is that okay?"

"Can."

The female comrade nodded, took the household registration book and other documents she handed over, and did not forget to praise her: "Your family has a high level of ideological awareness, and you are worthy of being the children of a working family. The countryside is a vast world. When you get there, work hard and use the knowledge you have learned to help rural development."

"Yes, we must roll in the mud, temper our hearts, fulfill the mission of educated youth, and be good students of socialism."

Yun Huaying was very cooperative verbally. She recited and practiced these slogans every day, and they didn't sound exaggerated or false at all when she shouted them out.

Seeing her good attitude and high level of ideological awareness, the two comrades in charge of registration applauded her and said, "Well done, young comrade! We look forward to your achievements in the countryside."

Yun Huaying smiled in agreement. Seeing that the men had already finished checking the household registration book, she introduced herself as they were about to register: "Comrades, my name is Fang Xue, and my sister is Fang Shuang."

"Okay, I'll give you a separate certificate."

Seeing that the female comrade had already written her name, Yun Huaying's eyes shone with a triumphant glint. She saw a large blue-covered notebook beside it, presumably for recording other important information, and asked subtly, "Comrades, can we choose the location for our trip to the countryside?"

"There is no choice. It is redistributed according to the needs of each place." The man answered her.

Yun Huaying understood and said, "Comrades, may I make a small request?"

"You say." The two looked at her.

"Our family is quite well off. Both my parents work, and my grandparents also have jobs. My three sisters and I have been spoiled a bit at home, so my father hopes that we can go to a place with more hardships to gain experience."

"He often listened to radio news, which said that conditions in the Northeast and Northwest were the most difficult and that many educated young people were needed to support construction. Leaders also taught us revolutionary comrades to aim for the four corners of the country, take root in the countryside and the frontiers, and use what we learned to build the countryside."

"Our eldest sister was assigned to a mountain village in the south. The conditions there are quite good. My sister and I want to go to the frontier to build up the frontier and support the poorest mountainous areas. Can you arrange for me to be assigned to the northwest and my third sister to be assigned to the northeast?"

These two comrades have been recruiting educated youth here for a long time, but this is the first time they have encountered someone who wants to go to the frontier. Almost all those who come to sign up want to go to the rural areas with better environment. Her behavior is completely different from everyone else, and they don't know what to say for a moment.

"Comrades, is it not possible?" Yun Huaying looked at them with a confused expression.
