Chapter 14 Building the kang (heated brick bed) and constructing the courtyard wall (1/2)

Hearing her father speak of her master in such a way, Zheng Nannan was extremely unhappy. She angrily retorted:

"Dad, what are you saying? My master is the best master, how could he not let me see it!"

"That morning, my mentor had me and Mai Sui follow behind her, watching her inspect and repair things over and over again, and she explained everything in great detail."

“My mentor is incredibly patient. She didn’t look down on us for being slow at all. She explained it three times in just one morning. Didn’t you see her voice was hoarse?”

Accountant Zheng never expected that Zhong Wanwan would be so honest in teaching, explaining things three times in one morning. What does that mean?

Even an apprentice at a county auto repair shop might not hear it three times in three years!

Accountant Zheng raised his voice excitedly:

"He only said it three times this morning? Your master is really good to you. You have to treat her well in the future, like a real sister!"

Accountant Zheng originally wanted to say that she treated him like her own parents, but when she thought of Zhong Zhiqing's age, she quickly changed it to her own sister.

Although Zhong Zhiqing was younger than her daughter, he was still her mentor, so the hierarchy of seniority still had to be observed!

Zheng Nannan nodded as if it were a matter of course:

"Of course you need to tell me! My master is so good to me, so I must be even better to him!"

Zheng Nannan raised her neck and puffed out her chest; she was proud that her mentor had been praised!

Inside the room, Zhong Wanwan was unaware of the conversation between Accountant Zheng and Zheng Nannan; she was discussing the issue of mounting a kang (heated brick bed) with Brother Wei!

Zhong Wanwan asked:

"Brother Wei, shall we start setting up the kang this afternoon?"

Brother Wei nodded and said:

"Okay, we'll set up the kang this afternoon. The three of us brothers can set up two kangs for you in one afternoon. We guarantee they'll burn well and not a single wisp of smoke will get into the house!"

Zhong Wanwan smiled and said:

"I have complete faith in Brother Wei's and his team's skills, but there's one thing I'm particular about: the size of the kang (heated brick bed)!"

Brother Wei thought Zhong Wanwan wanted to build a large kang (heated brick bed). These days, when people build a kang, they make it as big as possible so they can sleep comfortably. Plus, when the kang is heated in winter, the whole room gets warm too!

Brother Wei patted his chest and said:

"Zhong Zhiqing, just tell us what you need. We can build you a kang (heated brick bed) no matter how big it is!"

Zhong Wanwan shook her head and said:

"I don't want a large kang (heated brick bed), I want two smaller kangs. In my room, a kang that is 1.5 meters wide and 2 meters long will be fine, and in my brother's room, a kang that is 2.3 meters wide and 2 meters long will be fine!"

Brother Wei exclaimed in surprise:

"Huh? 1.5 meters wide? If you take away the space for the kang cabinet, your kang will only be 1 meter wide, which is only big enough for one person to sleep in. Zhong Zhiqing, you're not joking, are you?"

Zhong Wanwan said earnestly:

"You can't joke about something like this. I live alone in that room, what would I need such a big kang (heated brick bed) for?"

"That's my brother's room. Even without the kang cabinet, it's 1.8 meters wide, enough for two people to live in!"

“But what if people come? Then we won’t have any place to stay!” Brother Wei was about to say this when Brother Wei pulled him back.

Brother Wei looked at Brother Wei San, puzzled. Brother Wei San shook his head slightly, and fearing that his simple-minded brother would continue to ask, he explained in a low voice:

"Brother, Zhong Zhiqing did it this way on purpose, just to prevent people from coming to stay every few days because the place is big. Just do as Zhong Zhiqing asks, and you won't go wrong!"

Brother Wei then understood what was going on, and based on Zhong Wanwan's request, he suggested:

"If that's the case, then we'll have to build a heated wall so the room will be warm in winter. Otherwise, the small room with the heated kang is too big, and it'll be too cold inside in winter!"

"I suggest that the kang (heated brick bed) and the fire wall be made of large blue bricks. Although they heat up a bit slower, they also dissipate heat slowly, so one heating cycle can last for about a day!"
