Zhong Wanwan declined:
"That's not how it's calculated. Right now, you can't even buy leeks in the market, and the price is ridiculously high."
If Aunt Wang were to sell her two, she would be quite willing, but if she were to give them away for free, Zhong Wanwan would feel really embarrassed to accept them.
Aunt Wang said in a way that left no room for refusal:
"Don't talk to me about whether it's precious or not. No matter how precious it is, can it be more precious than the life of my son!"
"I won't mind giving you as much as you want, take it quickly, and I'll bring you more when you come out again!"
It's just a matter of nailing on a couple more wooden crates; there's nothing precious about it.
Aunt Wang has decided that only half a meter of space should be left on Wang Erlaizi's kang (heated brick bed) for sleeping; leaving more would be a waste.
If we plant chives everywhere else, we won't have to worry about exchanging them for money before the new year next year.
As for this year, all these chives will naturally go to Master Zhong!
Wang Erlaizi was unaware that the space he could sleep in had shrunk considerably.
Aunt Wang took the chives out of the basket, and hurriedly left with the empty basket.
These two bunches of chives were incredibly fresh. Although they were called two bunches, they actually weighed quite a bit, probably about two pounds!
Zhong Wanwan truly liked him, but she felt very guilty about it.
The chives planted on the kang (a heated brick bed) in the dead of winter must have been incredibly precious, and Zhong Wanwan felt a warm glow in her heart.
The chives have arrived, so we should hurry up and make dumplings to eat them, otherwise they'll spoil and we'll really waste them!
Zhong Wanwan took back the cabbage that Aunt Zheng was about to cut, and waved her hand, saying:
"We're not having cabbage dumplings today, we're having chive dumplings, with lots of meat, and one meat and egg dumpling!"
There are quite a few chives, but there are even more people eating them, so there definitely won't be enough for fillings.
However, if you add a little bit of chives, just enough to give it a chive flavor, and wrap it with pure meat filling, that will definitely be enough!
These days, even when making dumplings for Chinese New Year, people rarely eat pure meat, let alone outside of Chinese New Year.
It's just that Zhong Wanwan got a lot of roe deer meat; otherwise, she really couldn't have eaten so much!
Aunt Wang gave us chives, so how could we not bring out some for Aunt Wang when we made dumplings at home?
Based on a serving size of 50 dumplings per person, Zhong Wanwan delivered 150 dumplings to Aunt Wang.
When Wang Erlaizi returned home after watching the commotion, his eyes nearly popped out of their sockets as he ate the leek, pork, and egg dumplings.
"Oh my god, is this filled with chives, pork, and egg? Are we going to have to call it a night after this meal?"
Aunt Wang was savoring a bite of her dumpling when Wang Erlaizi interrupted her, saying irritably:
"If we don't break up, we'll be beheaded. This is your last meal. After you finish this meal, I'll send you on your way!"
To be honest, Wang Erlaizi usually didn't take Wang Da Niang's scolding seriously, but this time he actually started to believe it.
He knew how much his mother valued the chives on the kang (a heated brick bed). If he accidentally stepped on one of them while sleeping on the kang, he would get a beating the next day.
Even during the Lunar New Year, we can't cut just a couple of chives at home just for the aroma.
There's also meat. I only get to put more meat in my dumplings during Chinese New Year.
Don't be fooled by the fact that he goes hunting in the deep mountains with the hunting team every year; he gets a good share of the meat.
But his family wouldn't keep much of that meat.
Every year, his mother would prepare the meat and, before the Lunar New Year, she would take it to the city along with the chives to sell secretly.
The reason why Wang Erlaizi, who is unreliable at work, still lives a good life is because his family has this income.
What's going on today? Meat and chives again? Wang Erlaizi is really scared!
Seeing that Wang Erlaizi was so frightened that he was about to turn and run away, Wang Da Niang waved her hand and glared at him, saying:
"Why are you looking at me? Do I have dumplings on my face? If you don't like them, get off the table. Your dad and I will save them; we can make two meals out of them!"
I don't like it. It's full of meat, eggs, and chives, and the filling is all oily. You can tell it's been larded.
How could anyone not love such delicious dumplings? Wang Erlaizi closed his eyes and made up his mind: even if it was his last meal, he had to eat this before he went on his way.
Fortunately, Grandpa Wang still cared for his son to some extent and offered him some advice:
"Alright, hurry up and eat. What do you mean by 'last meal'? Your mom was just trying to scare you. This is a return gift from Master Zhong, after your mom gave him some chives."
"To be honest, Master Zhong is really kind. He's willing to give us such good dumplings!"
Grandpa Wang took a bite of the dumpling and was overjoyed. Then he looked at Wang Erlaizi and sighed inwardly.
If their son were successful and outstanding in everything, wouldn't it be good to try and win over such a wonderful girl?
However, Wang Erlaizi is so lazy and good-for-nothing that it's really not good for him to introduce girls to someone. That would not be repaying a debt of gratitude, but repaying kindness with enmity!
Oh, what a pity! Let him eat a couple more dumplings to ease his worries!
