Chapter 199 Grandma Xia's Views on Love (2/2)

This dish is loved not only by Zhong Wanwan, but also by Xiao Baiyang and Xia Ning.

After eating, Little White Poplar exclaimed:

"Brother, this Suhuang vegetable is really delicious! Let's make another plate tomorrow!"

Zhong Songbai rolled his eyes at him and said:

"I only fried 12 eggs in total, and I ate 3 of them today. I'll eat more tomorrow, but we won't have enough for the Chinese New Year!"

Zhong Songbai is the eldest son in the family, so he naturally thinks more about things.

Although everyone is watching closely, it's almost Chinese New Year, and he doesn't intend to miss out on anything he needs to prepare for his parents.

So one portion for Chinese New Year, one portion for parents, one portion for New Year's Day, there's no way to give Xiaobaiyang a proper treat.

Zhong Wanwan teased Zhong Songbai, saying:

"Little Poplar, it's not very useful to have your older brother do it; you should ask your sister-in-law instead!"

Little White Poplar's eyes darted around, and she called out to Xia Ning:

"Sister-in-law, people say that an elder sister-in-law is like a mother, so you have to treat me well. I want to eat Suhuangcai (a type of vegetable dish) tomorrow, so please ask my older brother to make it for me!"

These words made Xia Ning blush so much that her face turned red all the way to her neck. Zhong Songbai wasn't much better off; the tips of his ears turned red as well.

However, in order to help Xia Ning out of this predicament, he took the initiative to say:

"Okay, okay, I'll do it, I'll do it!"

Zhong Wanwan and Xiao Baiyang exchanged a glance, and both siblings revealed triumphant smiles.

Since their requests were met, it was natural to make room for the older/younger brother. Zhong Wanwan made an excuse:

"I need to go check on Wang Erlaizi's study progress. I don't want him to be doing poorly and get kicked out of the food factory again."

Xiao Baiyang's notebook was borrowed by Wang Erlaizi last night. That kid is more motivated than ever before.

Even Aunt Wang said that if he had had this much effort in his studies back then, he would never have failed the high school entrance exam.

Little Poplar immediately added:

"Big sister, wait for me! I need to go check on it too. My notes are so complicated. I have to tell him to be careful!"

The siblings left together in perfect unison, determined not to stay home as third wheels.

Zhong Wanwan and Xiao Baiyang made an excuse to leave, leaving only Xia Ning and Zhong Songbai, making the atmosphere in the room even more ambiguous.

Their faces were so red they looked like they were about to bleed. Xia Ning quickly got up to clear the dishes and said:

"I'll go wash the dishes."

Zhong Songbai tried to take over and wash the bowl himself, but because he was nervous, he grabbed Xia Ning's hand that was holding the bowl.

As if electrocuted, Xia Ning let go of the bowl, which fell to the ground and shattered. Xia Ning squatted down to pick it up.

Zhong Songbai quickly came over and pushed Xia Ning aside, saying:

"You rest, it'll be bad if you cut your hand. I'll take care of this."

Xia Ning watched Zhong Songbai diligently picking up the broken pieces from the ground and suddenly remembered something her grandmother had said to her before they went to the countryside.

After she signed up to go to the countryside, Tang Zixuan took her to her grandparents' house, and her grandparents politely invited Tang Zixuan to stay for dinner.

After dinner, while she was washing the dishes with her grandmother, her grandmother suddenly started talking about her and her grandfather's past when they were young.

Her grandparents were a little different from other grandparents; her grandmother wasn't the type of woman who stayed home to take care of the family.

When Grandma Xia was young, she fought alongside Grandpa Xia, but her rank was one level lower than his.

Although Grandma Xia's position is lower than Grandpa Xia's, she was much busier than Grandpa Xia before she retired.

In other people's homes, you mostly hear grandmothers talking about things from years ago, but grandfathers rarely do.

The Xia family is the opposite. Grandma Xia is a woman of few words, while Grandpa Xia often tells the children stories from his earlier years, sometimes even recounting his past with Grandma Xia.

Because she rarely heard Grandma Xia talk about her youth, Xia Ning listened attentively. She remembered that after Grandma finished speaking, she looked up at her meaningfully, then glanced at Tang Zixuan, who was playing chess with Grandpa Xia in the living room, and said:

"Our generation doesn't know what 'liking' means, or what love means to you young people."

"I remember that your grandpa always saved the food I liked for me, no matter what. He always gave me the cloth ration coupons to make clothes. But when it came to work, your grandpa was the fastest to grab the food!"

“Sometimes you shouldn’t look at what a person says, but at what they do. No matter how beautiful the words are, they’re just empty words, but actions don’t lie.”
