Mr. Qiu was so angry he wanted to hit someone. How could he have married this idiot? Mr. Qiu shouted:
"You stupid woman, you're utterly foolish! You're going to ruin Xinping!"
"I'm too lazy to waste my breath on you. Find the things you gave Ze'an. Where did you put them? I want to check them myself."
This was originally Qiu's father's way of appeasing Qiu Ze'an, plus Aunt Zhou really angered Qiu's father.
He was afraid that Qiu Zean's newly conceived idea of helping his younger brother would be reconsidered, so he wanted to personally check the things that Aunt Zhou had previously put away.
Aunt Zhou panicked completely. She thought that Mr. Qiu was just saying it and wouldn't pay much attention. She thought she wouldn't refuse to give it to him and would just keep delaying.
Anyway, Qiu Zean can't stay at home forever, so she can afford to wait.
As it turned out, Mr. Qiu hadn't forgotten and insisted on checking the items himself.
Aunt Zhou said in a panic:
"I, I, I'm not ready yet. Ze'an isn't leaving today, why are you in such a hurry?"
Mr. Qiu said with dissatisfaction:
“It’s up to Ze’an when he leaves. This is his home. If his post weren’t so far away, as the eldest son, he would definitely live at home!”
"If I tell you to pack your things, then pack your things. If you don't know how, I'll do it myself..."
Seeing that the situation was hopeless, Aunt Zhou knew that if she didn't go and get it herself, Mr. Qiu would really have to take matters into his own hands.
She didn't care who made the move, but if Qiu's father did it, she wouldn't be able to do anything underhanded!
Aunt Zhou could only stammer:
"Okay, I'll go get ready right away."
Aunt Zhou lingered outside, reluctantly taking out all her belongings.
She liked this one very much, and when she looked at the other one, she was reluctant to part with it.
After carefully selecting about a third of the items, including the jade pieces she didn't particularly like and the dark jewelry box, she prepared to hand them over.
As for the deposit certificates and cash, she had no intention of taking any of them. She said that she had spent them all over the years, so what could her father possibly do to kill her?
Aunt Zhou came out with a jewelry box, and Qiu Zean showed an excited expression. He pulled the jewelry box from Aunt Zhou's hand and carefully opened it.
At the very top was her mother's favorite white jade hairpin. Qiu Ze'an's eyes welled up with tears, and he quickly looked up, saying sharply:
"This is at most a third of what I gave you back then. Where did the rest go?"
Aunt Zhou argued unreasonably:
"You say one-third is one-third? I could say that's all there is!"
"Who knows what else? Maybe your mother took everything with her when she left? Don't make baseless accusations!"
Qiu Zean had long expected her to do something like this. He didn't say a word and turned back to his room.
Aunt Zhou, thinking he had nothing to say, shouted even louder outside:
"You're slandering me! You've taken my kindness for granted. I've helped hide this for so many years. I've done my part, and you haven't even said thank you. Old Qiu, what else do you have to say? This is your good son."
Mr. Qiu also felt that Qiu Ze'an's actions were impolite, but since his relationship with his son had just improved, he naturally wouldn't scold Qiu Ze'an. He frowned and said:
"Alright, alright, that's enough with the words. You're so short-sighted. You know perfectly well whether you've embezzled a few or not."
He thought Aunt Zhou was timid and only dared to take a few pieces of gold jewelry. He told Qiu Ze'an not to take it too seriously, to turn a blind eye, and the matter would be over.
Aunt Zhou now felt that Qiu Ze'an had no evidence, and she was shouting quite loudly:
"I swear to God, I didn't take a single one! Old Qiu, you can't insult me like this, saying I'm dishonest. You're trying to force me to my death!"
As she spoke, Aunt Zhou was about to bang her head against the wall when Qiu Minting came out of the house and hugged Aunt Zhou, crying uncontrollably.
Just then, Qiu Ze'an came out of the house with a long list in his hand.
Upon approaching, Qiu Ze'an handed the list to Qiu's father and said:
"Father, these are the names, origins, and sources of each item in the jewelry box, as well as records of each deposit amount, date, and so on. Please take a look!"
