Chapter 60 A Letter from My Cousin

After dinner, Lin Qingyan and Li Qinqin went to the kitchen to make the medicinal ointment. Once the ointment was ready, it was stored in an empty jar for later use.

After finishing these tasks, Lin Qingyan took her leave, wanting to hurry back to the educated youth settlement before it got dark.

Li Qinqin was worried about her safety on the way, so she took her back.

Li Qinqin had just returned from the educated youth settlement when the postman arrived at her door, saying, "There's mail for your family."

Li Qinqin took the letter and said with a smile, "Thank you for your hard work, postman. It's so late and you're still delivering mail. Come in and have some water."

The postman waved his hand: "No, no, thank you for your concern. I have a lot of mail today, and I have to rush to the next address. I'm off."

After saying that, he got on his bicycle and left.

After seeing the address and name written on the envelope, Li Qinqin smiled and took it home.

The captain asked, "Who wrote to us again? Was it your aunt?"

"It's not my aunt, it's my third cousin."

"Oh, it's Zheng Ting."

Upon hearing the name, Grandma Li quickly waved her hand at Li Qinqin, saying, "Quick, quick, read to me what your third cousin wrote."

"Okay, Grandma."

Li Qinqin took out the letter, nestled close to Old Mrs. Li, and began to read it.

"Grandma, Uncle, Aunt, Cousin Li Gang, Cousin Li Fang, Cousin Qinqin, are you all doing well at home? How is Grandma's health?...Grandma, my cousin said he'll come to see you when he has a vacation in a while."

Grandma Li's face instantly lit up with a bright smile: "Good, good, I'll be waiting for him to come see me."

The following morning, Lin Sisi and the carefree Lin Guanghui followed the brigade leader in an oxcart to Mopan Village Brigade. After taking them to the educated youth settlement, the brigade leader gave them a few instructions: "Put your things away first, then come with me to the brigade to collect your grain allowance."

The captain didn't think much of Lin Sisi along the way, but he had a very bad impression of Lin Guanghui, so he didn't speak to him very politely.

The two went to the brigade to collect their grain, but when they got to their dormitory, they both showed expressions of disgust.

Lin Guanghui didn't have any bedding yet, so Lin Sisi put her luggage in the girls' dormitory and laid out her bedding in the spot where Tong Jiaojiao used to sleep.

Lin Guanghui followed her in: "Sister, where are that brat's bedding?"

He surveyed the large earthen bed and finally noticed that the bedding on one side of the bed against the wall looked very familiar. The thin and tattered quilt and mattress were the same ones that Lin Qingyan usually used at home.

“This must be that brat’s bedding. It’s exactly the same as the one she used when she was at our house,” Lin Guanghui said. “I’ll take it. It’ll be mine from now on. Now I won’t have to worry about not having anything to cover myself with.”

After Lin Guanghui finished speaking, he rolled up the quilt and picked it up. As for whether that brat lived or died, it was none of their business. It would be better if she died.

Seeing his attitude, Lin Sisi naturally wouldn't stop him. Lin Guanghui was one of her own, and of course she hoped that Lin Guanghui could benefit from it.

Lin Qingyan was her enemy; Lin Qingyan had signed her up to go to the countryside, and she still harbored resentment towards Lin Qingyan.

Lin Guanghui looked around the houses at the educated youth settlement again: "Sister, the conditions here are really bad. I guess the conditions for the male educated youth aren't much better."

Lin Sisi rolled her eyes. "What can we do? We weren't supposed to go to the countryside in the first place. If it weren't for Lin Qingyan, we wouldn't have come to this godforsaken place. If we had stayed in Jinshi, we probably could have married Mingzhou sooner."

As she said this, she hated Lin Qingyan even more.

Lin Guanghui gritted his teeth, holding Lin Qingyan's bedding in his arms, and scanned the room again.

"Where are that brat's other things? She's so hateful, we should take all her things away and leave her with nothing."

Lin Sisi wanted to do the same, but when she saw that all the boxes and toiletries in the room were similar, she couldn't tell which ones belonged to Lin Qingyan.

"We can't tell the difference from the others, so let's let that girl have it for now. We can take it slowly later when we find out."

"Okay, I'll put the bedding in the dormitory over there first."

Lin Guanghui then carried the quilt back to the male educated youth dormitory.

After Lin Sisi made the bed, she sat on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) to rest for a while. Then she felt the urge to urinate, so she went to the toilet.

It would have been a problem if she hadn't gone; she almost choked on her own breath as soon as she walked in.

"What kind of toilet is this? It stinks so badly, no one can even get in."

Just then, Hu Jiajia returned and saw some newly arrived educated youth complaining about the toilet. Since she needed to use the toilet, she went straight in.

There was only one urinal in the toilet, and Hu Jiajia needed to relieve herself, so she stayed there for about twenty minutes. Lin Sisi was waiting outside and almost wet her pants.

She urged Hu Jiajia inside, "Why haven't you come out yet?"

Hu Jiajia said, "Didn't you say no one can come in here? You don't need to, so why do you care so much?"

"I...I want to go in."

"Oh? Aren't you human?"

Lin Sisi couldn't care less about anything else at this point. "Please let me in."

Hu Jiajia stayed inside until she was satisfied before leaving. As she went out, she glanced at Lin Sisi and her first impression of her was extremely bad.

Soon, the other educated youth also returned from the fields one after another.

Because new educated youth were arriving, the old and new educated youth had to meet and get to know each other. When the old educated youth met Lin Sisi and Lin Guanghui, they first introduced themselves to them.

When Shen Tengfei introduced himself, he had a stutter and spoke haltingly, "I...I...I...I...my name is...my name is Shen Teng...Teng..."

Lin Guanghui was the first to become impatient, "So he's a stutterer."

As soon as he said this, several hateful gazes were cast at him.

Shen Tengfei lowered his head in embarrassment. Wang Qiang said, "Comrade, please watch your words and show some respect to the other comrades. Now, please apologize to Comrade Shen Tengfei."

Lin Guanghui didn't want to apologize, but under Lin Sisi's prompting look, he still said to Shen Tengfei, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to, please forgive me."

Shen Tengfei was a good-tempered man, and since he didn't want to continue the matter, he nodded and walked away.

The subsequent self-introductions were all perfunctory; they only vaguely knew each other's names, and neither showed any friendly expression to the other.

It can be said that the siblings offended both the male and female educated youth there as soon as they arrived at the educated youth settlement.

Among the female educated youth, Shen Man saw the newcomer Lin Sisi and her gaze immediately fell on Lin Sisi's neck, hands and wrists, but she didn't see anything. There was nothing on Lin Guanghui either.

We can't find it now; we can only take a closer look when Lin Sisi wipes her body tonight.

While Shen Man was observing Lin Sisi, Lin Sisi also noticed Shen Man's gaze.

The moment the woman saw her, her gaze fixed on her neck and hands, as if she were deliberately observing those areas. Was there something wrong with her neck and hands? Why was she specifically looking at those places?
