Lin Sisi returned to the educated youth settlement in a daze. As soon as she entered the door, she subconsciously touched her shirt pocket.
This is the same pocket where she used to put the phoenix jade pendant; it's still empty.
She didn't find the phoenix jade pendant on the road and wasn't sure if someone had picked it up. Further on, she would reach the foot of the mountain, where it would be dangerous and few people went. She had to turn back and wait until the next morning to go up the mountain to look for it again.
At the educated youth settlement, the educated youth had already cooked pheasant and rabbit meat, and a rich aroma wafted from the kitchen, but Lin Sisi had no appetite at all.
The kitchen was bustling with activity, as if everyone was sharing meat.
She returned to her dormitory alone. Whether it was because of exhaustion or because she was too disappointed, she felt weak all over. As soon as she got back to her room, she took off her shoes and went to bed.
The educated youth were all eating meat, but there was not enough meat for all of them, so they also cooked their usual meals.
Lin Sisi paid the food fee for the educated youth settlement, and Chen Lu went to call her to eat: "Comrade Lin Sisi, there are flatbreads and porridge in the kitchen, why don't you get up and eat something?"
Lin Sisi was weak and didn't want to eat. But when she thought about having to go up the mountain to find the jade pendant the next day, she got up, ate a piece of flatbread, drank half a bowl of porridge, and then went back to her room to lie down.
Lin Qingyan and her grandmother returned home, leaving Lin Zhiheng alone. The little guy, unaware that his sister and grandmother would be back that evening, ate a little something and then fed the rabbits.
Perhaps because the house was too quiet, he stayed by the rabbit burrow for a while, talked to the rabbits, and then caught another rabbit and put it in his bed to keep him company.
But the rabbit seemed unwilling to keep him company. When it tried to escape but was held down, it decided to go all the way and pooped a few black beans in his bed and then peed.
It feels so good to be able to poop and pee in a human's nest!
After it had its fun, Lin Zhiheng threw it back into the rabbit hutch.
The sheets got dirty from the rabbit, so he took them off and washed them in the yard.
When Lin Qingyan and her mother-in-law returned home, they saw him washing bed sheets in the yard, with a dim kerosene lamp burning beside him.
"Xiao Heng".
Lin Qingyan called his name, and upon hearing his sister's voice, Lin Zhiheng quickly dropped the bed sheet he was holding and walked towards the door.
He recognized the visitors as Lin Qingyan and Granny Lin.
"Sister, Grandma, you're all back!" The boy was clearly excited. "Sister, it's so sudden! You've been released. Lin Guanghui must have been convicted, right?"
"Yes, he confessed first before the police let us go back."
"Sister, Grandma, how did you get back? If I had known you were coming back, I would have gone to the brigade leader's house to borrow an oxcart to pick you up."
"Captain Li and Officer Huang brought us back on their bicycles. They've gone to the brigade leader's house now."
"Oh, then Brother Lu should know you're back. By the way, are you hungry? I'll go cook for you."
Grandma Lin's stomach rumbled, just as the occasion suggested.
Lin Qingyan and Lin Zhiheng smiled together. Lin Zhiheng turned and walked into the kitchen: "Sister, mother-in-law, you go back to your room and rest for a while. I'll go and cook for you."
He went into the kitchen, and Lin Qingyan went to wash the sheets for him. Hearing the sound of water, he quickly came out of the kitchen, saying, "Sister, you should go inside and rest. You don't need to do any work."
"It's okay, I'm not tired. When I was at the police station, I spent most of my time sitting or lying down. I didn't have to walk here myself, so I'm not tired at all."
"That won't work either, sister. You've been in the police station for so long, you just got back and need to relax."
He insisted on helping Lin Qingyan up. Lin Qingyan smiled and said, "Why don't we cook together? It's been a long time since I've talked to my brother. We can chat while we cook."
"Okay, sister."
"Xiao Heng, you start the fire, and I'll cook."
Lin Zhiheng knew that his cooking skills were far inferior to Lin Qingyan's, so he obediently went to start the fire.
A little while later, Granny Lin also appeared at the kitchen door: "You two are having so much fun, I want to join in too. Xiao Heng, go do the laundry, I'll start the fire."
Grandma Lin chased Lin Zhiheng away again.
Lin Qingyan cooked corn porridge. There wasn't enough time to make steamed buns today, so she could only make multigrain pancakes.
There were several cabbages, as well as radishes and potatoes in the kitchen.
Lin Qingyan asked the other two what dishes they wanted to eat.
Grandma Lin answered, "Potatoes!"
Lin Zhiheng also answered, "Potatoes!"
"Then let's make potatoes."
Lin Qingyan is preparing to make hot and sour shredded potatoes, which are sour and spicy, appetizing and perfect with rice.
She first peeled the potatoes, then used her excellent knife skills to cut them into thin strips. Soaking them in water to remove the starch made the stir-fried potato strips crisper and more refreshing.
Heat the oil in a wok, add a few dried chili pepper pieces, then add the soaked shredded potatoes and stir-fry. When the potatoes are about 60-70% cooked, add the aged vinegar, stir-fry a couple of times, and it's ready to serve.
They prepared a simple meal, served it in the living room, and the three of them sat around it together.
After many days, the three of them sat down to eat together again, and each of them felt as if they had been separated by a lifetime.
Lin Qingyan gave each of Grandma Lin and Lin Zhiheng a pair of chopsticks: "Eat quickly."
Lin Zhiheng picked up his chopsticks but didn't pick up any food. Instead, he sniffled and started crying.
It made indistinct whimpering sounds.
When Lin Qingyan saw him crying, she quickly went to comfort him.
"Xiao Heng, what's wrong? Let's eat, why are you crying?"
Lin Zhiheng raised his hand to wipe away his tears: "Sister, I'm so excited, but also so sad. Sister went through such a thrilling experience, and now you're finally safe and sound. I'm so excited. But when you were in danger, I was powerless to help you. I was so afraid of losing you then, sob sob."
Seeing him so sad, Lin Qingyan couldn't help but feel a little sad too.
Not only Lin Zhiheng, but she herself, as the person involved, was also very scared and sad when she was in the police station. Looking back now, although she did not suffer any physical pain, it was a very difficult time.
"Xiao Heng, it's all over now. Your sister is safe and sound. We should be happy and stop thinking about things that make us unhappy."
"Uh-huh."
Lin Zhiheng seemed to have vented all the grief that had been building up in his heart for days, and wiped away his tears.
"Xiao Heng, eat up."
"Um."
Lin Zhiheng picked up some shredded potatoes with his chopsticks and put them in his mouth. He tasted the familiar flavor and felt a warmth return to his heart. He smiled at Lin Qingyan.
Lin Qingyan smiled and said, "Eat more."
