Chapter Ninety-Nine: Some Resistance to Children
Shen Yuming was caught off guard by the hug and didn't know how to react. She looked at Shen Yuzhu with some panic. Apart from her sister and the child, she had never been treated so gently by anyone.
"Xiao Lian, don't do this, don't scare Yu Ming."
After Zhou Daoming said that, Chu Lian realized that she might have been a little too emotional. She quickly let go of Shen Yuming, wiped away her tears, and looked at her nervously.
"I didn't scare you, did I, child? Auntie was just so happy that I was distracted and thought I had seen... Ever since Zhuzhu said she had found her sister, I've been so happy that I haven't been able to sleep for several nights. If it weren't for the fact that we hadn't settled in yet after arriving in Beijing and had encountered so many other things, your uncle and I would have loved to sprout wings and fly over to reunite with you."
Chu Lian started crying again as she spoke, but this time she was more restrained.
Shen Yuming held her hand and quickly patted it, "I heard that Aunt Chu, you and Uncle Zhou send letters every month, and Zhuzhu reads them to me. And all those things you send, so many of them every time. I, thank you Aunt Chu and Uncle Zhou for thinking of me. I'm fine, I haven't suffered any hardship!"
Chu Lian and Zhou Daoming felt a pang of sadness upon hearing this. After all these years away from home, she must have suffered greatly, and they knew all about her situation.
Knowing that the two children would not dare to tell them the truth, she had someone inquire about the child's experience early on. After learning about it, she felt even more heartbroken.
Zhou Daoming didn't sleep all night. He smoked with Shufen until midnight, and got so angry that his stomach hurt. He called the farm where Lü Jiahao and Zhong Fu were, implying that they should take good care of them.
Life was already tough there, and last time someone secretly broke those two people's legs. Now, there's someone from Beijing calling to ask them to take good care of him. You can imagine how difficult their lives are.
"Mom and Dad, Zeng-ge, come inside quickly, let's talk inside."
"Yes, yes, look at me, I got so excited that I kept chatting with Yuming. Come on, let's go inside, let's go inside."
As Chu Lian spoke, she pulled Shen Yuming toward the house, but her smile faltered slightly when she saw the children.
Zhou Daoming noticed this and quickly coughed twice to remind her.
It was agreed beforehand that when she saw Yu Ming, she should pay attention to how she spoke to the child, but Chu Lian couldn't control herself. She knew she had no right to say anything.
But I still can't help disliking those kids. If it weren't for them and their damned father, Yuming wouldn't have suffered so much. If we could get help from the government, maybe he could find a good home.
It's better than one person raising so many children alone, stuck in a small village.
Shen Yuming was a sensitive person, and she quickly noticed this. She glanced at Shen Yuzhu with some concern and tightened her grip on Ya Ya's hand.
Upon entering the main room, Zeng Hu and Zhou Daoming placed their belongings against the wall, while Shen Yuming placed his things on the table and then poured several glasses of water onto it.
"Mom and Dad must be tired from the journey. What would you like to eat for lunch? I'll make it."
"No rush, no rush. Your dad and I passed by the state-run restaurant on our way here and asked Zeng Hu to buy us a lot of food. We can heat it up and eat it in a bit. Oh, Zhuzhu, just thinking about how you and that brat Congsheng got your marriage certificate has kept me up for several nights."
Shen Yuzhu: "......."
Why does this sentence sound so familiar?
After Chu Lian finished speaking, she took a sip of water, said "Oh," and waved with a smile, signaling Zeng Hu to open the large bag. She took out some local specialties and snacks from Beijing and placed them all on the table.
"I specially asked someone to buy these. There's also a pack from Haicheng. You're from Haicheng, so I thought you'd like them. I bought you a lot, my good child. See if you like them. If you don't, you can try these from Beijing. Auntie also brought you some clothes and fabrics, and a few of the trendy dresses from Beijing."
As she spoke, she covered her mouth with her hand and leaned closer to Shen Yuming, saying, "There are no beads, so don't worry about wearing it!"
"Hey, Mom, I heard you really clearly! You can't be so obviously biased!"
"Oh dear, oh dear, about size? I'm not biased, I'm not biased. I'll give you the money later. Buy whatever you like. Mom is so tired and dizzy, I can't figure out what you young people like."
The two chatted and laughed, making Shen Yuming laugh out loud. Tears welled up in her eyes, threatening to fall, making her look pitiful.
Zeng Hu was stunned for a moment.
Shen Yuming noticed the gaze and awkwardly avoided it.
She turned around and opened a few snacks to eat. There were many local specialties of Haicheng that she had never eaten before, and even more that she had never seen before.
He tasted it himself and thought it was really delicious. He then gave it to Chu Lian and Shen Yuzhu, and distributed one to each of the children. He also had Panpan give one to Zhou Daoming and Zeng Hu.
There was no other way; among the children, Panpan was the bravest. She took it and handed it to Zhou Daoming and Zeng Hu with a smile.
"Uncle eats, and so does your uncle."
"Okay, good child, thank you!"
Zeng Hu chuckled, took a bite, and said, "Thank you!"
Panpan was quite bold and wasn't frightened at all. She returned to Shen Yuming with a smile, which surprised Chu Lian.
Along her journey, most of the village children were timid and rarely saw someone so outgoing.
"This child isn't shy at all."
When Chu Lian said that, Shen Yuming remembered that she should introduce them. She felt that she might have thought that Aunt Chu and Uncle Zhou didn't like the children because she hadn't mentioned them earlier.
“Aunt Chu, Uncle Zhou, these are all my children. They are naive and shy around strangers, but they are all very sensible. If it weren’t for them all these years, I... I don’t know if I could have made it through.”
Chu Lian was slightly taken aback when she heard this, and quickly comforted her. She was a doctor and had no problem with the child itself. It was just that because they were Shen Yuming's children, she felt that they were the ones holding Yuming back. But now it seemed that it was all her own subjective imagination.
If Shen Yuming thinks it's good, then what is there for her to hesitate about?
“Good boy, let’s not talk about the past. It’s the first time we’ve met the children, and Lao Zhou and I didn’t bring anything. We just gave them a red envelope. Yuming, you must take this. It’s for the children.”
"I......."
"Sister, take this. It's from Mom and Dad for the kids. When you go to the military base for the wedding, take them to the county town to have a good look around, buy them some things they like, and take a picture together."
"Okay, then I'll accept it. Thank you, Aunt Chu, and thank you, Uncle Zhou."
"Ah, that's right, what a good boy."
Shen Yuming thought they could talk in the main room, so he took the food to the kitchen. Zeng Hu followed him very observantly. Zhou Daoming originally liked Zeng Hu very much.
He had been chatting and laughing all the way, and seemed like a very nice person. But now that he was sticking to Shen Yuming as soon as he came up, Shen Yuming immediately found him annoying.
