Chapter 23 Awkward

Zhang Hongcheng walked out of the Jixi Youth League Office with some disappointment.

It turned out that he had to go to the Youth League Office of the Fourth Division of the Corps to handle the procedures for his arrival as an educated youth.

The Youth League Office of the Fourth Division was located in the northern suburbs of Jixi City.

He picked up his bags from the check-in point and arrived at the place when people were almost off work at noon.

The receptionist was named Zhao. He was very enthusiastic and immediately helped him find his place of residence.

"You're going to the 39th Regiment, Hulin Yunshan Farm."

"You have to take the farm train to Hulin, and then take a bus to the farm headquarters."

"Come, follow me to the cafeteria and have a bite first."

The educated youth center of the Fourth Division provided a vegetable soup and four steamed buns to the educated youth passing by. The taste was not quite to Zhang Hongcheng's southern taste, but the ingredients were indeed sufficient.

He ate three and couldn't finish any more, so he planned to take the other one with him on the road.

Secretary Zhao took out two more steamed buns and stuffed them into his hands without saying a word.

"There aren't many educated youth who can make it to dinner anyway. You can take two more. It's only this one trip."

After dinner, Secretary Zhao took the initiative to help Zhang Hongcheng carry some of the luggage to the nearby train station. After waiting for ten minutes, he caught a farm train to Dongfanghong.

There are no seats in the train car, this is a freight car.

The carriage was filled with large and small bags of various supplies and straw. People lay down on the straw with the door open and the cool breeze blowing in. It was so comfortable.

The farm train clanged into Hulin at six in the afternoon.

The truck unloader who took half a pack of Daqianmen from Zhang Hongcheng along the way was very enthusiastic and took the initiative to help him find a truck passing by Yunshan.

The truck carrying Zhang Hongcheng and his luggage wobbled for more than four hours before passing the headquarters of the 39th Regiment and dropping Zhang Hongcheng and his luggage off on the street.

At ten o'clock in the evening, the small town-like site was pitch black.

Zhang Hongcheng ate a few steamed buns on the farm train, so he wasn't hungry at the moment.

July is the hottest time in Hulin area, but Yunshan is located at a high altitude, so the temperature at night is only around 14 degrees Celsius.

Zhang Hongcheng found the porch of the Youth League Office at the field headquarters and slept under the eaves for a night with his huge luggage.

When he emerged from the pile of luggage with sleepy eyes, it was just dawn.

It even scared the person who was opening the door of the Youth League Office.

The one who was startled was a girl, but she immediately started laughing again.

"Arrived last night?"

Seeing Zhang Hongcheng half asleep, he nodded subconsciously.

She stopped opening the door again.

"It just so happens that the cafeteria is open. Do you have food coupons? I'll take you to have breakfast."

Zhang Hongcheng rubbed his face fiercely.

"No, could you please watch my luggage for me? I can go by myself."

The girl pointed in the direction of the cafeteria and reminded him.

"The big meat buns at the field office are a must-try. You better hurry up."

Zhang Hongcheng walked in the direction the girl pointed and saw the cafeteria with the lights still on.

It was just a little after six o'clock, and there were already quite a few people in the cafeteria.

Fortunately, there weren’t many people buying meat buns.

In the canteen of the machinery factory, meat buns cost six cents each plus one or two grain coupons, but here they only cost five cents plus one or two grain coupons.

Moreover, the meat buns in Northeast China are bigger than those in the south.

Zhang Hongcheng, who had been hungry for a long time, bought four big meat buns and a bowl of millet porridge in one go. The ticket collector in the cafeteria saw that he was giving a national food coupon and glanced at him deliberately.

"Just arrived?"

"Um."

The ticket collector looked around and suddenly lowered his voice.

"Are there any national tickets left?"

Zhang Hongcheng understood what he meant and took out another 20 kilograms of national food coupons.

The man immediately gave him thirty kilograms of Jixi local food coupons.

However, Zhang Hongcheng did not notice the suppressed smile in the other person's eyes - he made a fortune.

The vegetable soup at the farm office is one cent more expensive than the one in the canteen of the machinery factory, selling for three cents per serving, but the portion is quite large, especially because the soup contains not only vegetables but also some noodle dumplings.

Zhang Hongcheng ate voraciously.

Four big meat buns and a big bowl of vegetable soup finally filled his stomach.

He then bought four more sticky rice dumplings to carry with him, spending ten cents and four ounces of food coupons. He then found the person who had just exchanged food coupons and asked him to help fill his kettle with boiling water.

Only then did he stroll back to the Youth League Office.

At the door of the Youth League Office, there was nothing where Zhang Hongcheng had put his luggage. He stuck his head into the room and found that his luggage was piled in the corner.

The girl just now was cleaning.

The deputy director in charge of the Youth League Office at the site was named Liu. Zhang Hongcheng waited for more than ten minutes before he saw Deputy Director Liu.

Behind Deputy Director Liu was a young man carrying luggage.

It seems he is here to report as well.

"Both of you take a seat, Xiao Qin," Deputy Director Liu greeted the two and then turned to the girl, "Go find the files of Comrade Qiao Xinwei and Comrade Zhang Hongcheng."

"One is from Shanghai, and the other is from Hunan Province."

The girl agreed, ran to the inner room and rummaged around for a few minutes, then came out with two files.

One of the file bags was spotless, as if it had just been shipped from the factory, while the other was wrinkled, as if it had gone through countless hardships.

Deputy Director Liu subconsciously picked up the clean file bag first.

He looked at the name and smiled at Qiao Xinwei.

"You Shanghainese are very particular about your work. There aren't many files like this that are still in good condition when they are sent to me."

Xiao Qin also echoed from the side.

"Of course not. When this file arrived, it was still wrapped in oil paper. I was surprised at the time."
