When Fang Yihua heard what he said, although she was still holding a grudge, she also felt that there was some truth to it.
Indeed, it wouldn't sound good if word got out that Shaw, the film tycoon, was fussing over such trivial matters.
When Run Run Shaw saw that she was not speaking, he smiled and changed the subject.
"By the way, has the Asian film industry announced a release date for 'Snake in the Eagle'?"
We'll go check it out then, hehe, I want to see for myself just how bad his filming really is! Then we can have some fun!
The thought of seeing Kobayashi Tenno's box office performance flop immediately cheered Run Run Shaw up.
Fang Yihua was amused by him, and her anger subsided considerably. She said:
"I just received a call from Asia Films informing me that their copies are still being rushed into production. There are only thirteen copies available so far, and they've all been given to our Shaw Brothers cinema chain."
The film officially premieres at 2:30 PM today.
Shaw was pleased to hear this.
"Okay! Let's go take a look this afternoon!"
He planned to go to the nearest cinema after dinner to see just how bad that film by Xiao Linsheng really was.
...
Around 2 p.m., right after lunch, Run Run Shaw and Mona Fong parked their car in front of a Shaw Brothers cinema in Causeway Bay.
But as soon as the car came to a stop, the two of them froze.
At the cinema entrance, the line to buy tickets stretched three or four deep, a massive, dark mass of people, with the end of the line almost reaching across the street.
"How...how come there are so many people?"
Fang Yihua sat in the car, looking at the crowds outside the window, somewhat unable to believe her eyes.
"Are they all here to see 'Snake in the Eagle'?"
Shaw's face had already darkened.
He rolled the car window down a little, and the noise from outside immediately rushed in.
"What's going on? There are so many people today! I should have come to queue at noon!"
"You didn't know? 'Snake in the Eagle' came out today! The newspapers are going crazy over it!"
"Yes, yes, didn't you read the newspaper? Boss Shao himself came out and said that if this movie doesn't air at Shaw Brothers, it'll be a loss for Shaw Brothers! How could it be bad?"
"That's right! I'm going to see what kind of movie it is that can make even Shao Laoliu back down!"
Every word was clearly transmitted into the car.
Sir Run Run Shaw and Mona Fong looked extremely grim.
I got tricked by that little bastard!
He's using his reputation to swindle and deceive people!
"That bastard!"
Fang Yihua was so angry that her teeth itched.
Shaw clenched his fists tightly, but he still suppressed his anger.
"Never mind, we're already here."
He scoffed inwardly.
So what if there are a lot of people? They were all tricked into coming.
Once the first group of people have finished watching and left, they'll realize they've been tricked. The more they curse, the more face Lin Tianwang will lose!
"Let's go in! I'll see how he gets out of this mess today!"
The two men put on sunglasses, pulled their hats down low, and quietly entered the cinema through the staff entrance.
Instead of going to the VIP lounge upstairs, they specifically found seats in the very last corner of the screening room.
Today, they are just ordinary viewers.
They want to see with their own eyes how this movie dies, and hear with their own ears how the audience criticizes it.
Soon, the lights in the screening room went out.
The big screen lit up.
"Snake in the Eagle's Shadow" officially began to reflect this.
Run Run Shaw leaned back in his chair, arms crossed, looking like he was waiting to see what would happen.
In his view, "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow" was definitely a poorly made film from beginning to end.
Not to mention that it posed no threat to Shaw Brothers films, any medium-sized film company on the market could probably produce a film that would far surpass "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow".
Mona Fong also looked relaxed and at ease, ready to give the movie a proper "judgment".
The movie theater quieted down, and the audience, who had been noisy and discussing things a moment ago, now focused their attention on the big screen.
The movie begins with a very formulaic, lighthearted, and humorous slice-of-life scene.
Jackie Chan plays Jian Fu, who is bullied by his fellow students at the martial arts school, resulting in various embarrassing situations that elicited bursts of lighthearted laughter from the audience.
It can be said that this opening scene alone is enough to prove that "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow" was not a hastily made, shoddy work.
However, Run Run Shaw had such high standards!
He saw these scenes but didn't take them seriously. Instead, he sneered inwardly, "Hmph, it's just another low-level joke. Nothing new."
Mona Fong smiled and felt that such a beginning had already predetermined that the movie "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow" would be just so-so.
However, as the movie's plot progressed, the atmosphere in the theater immediately changed when the disheveled old beggar Bai Changtian appeared and easily outmaneuvered the bully who came to provoke him with his "snake-style fist."
That kind of tricky, bizarre, and somewhat comical boxing style was something no one had ever seen before!
"Huh? This kung fu is quite interesting!"
Shaw unconsciously sat up straight, and the disdain on his face lessened somewhat.
He is an absolute expert in the film industry and could tell at a glance that the plot of this set of boxing techniques was very cleverly designed and highly entertaining.
Mona Fong also began to get engrossed in the film. She found that the action sequences in this movie were completely different from the rigid and formulaic style of Shaw Brothers' previous works, and were full of inspiration and imagination.
