Chapter 55 Guilt

After all this commotion, it was already getting dark.

After the original owner married into the family, she was kept at home as a slave every day and hardly ever went out.

Fang Yan does go out every day, but she mostly stays in the village and goes to the county town.

I'm not very familiar with the houses in the village.

Zhang Jizhou joined the army at a young age, so he knew even less about the houses in the village.

Fortunately, his work often involves similar situations, and his judgment is better than Fang Yan's.

"This way." Under his guidance, they circled around several times, then slid down a high dam and went through two alleys.

Fang Yan suddenly heard a child crying. She stopped and listened carefully before running towards the sound. "It's Xiaoyuzai crying!"

Fang Yan had already told Zhang Jizhou about the name change.

She also told Zhang Jizhou about how Fang Baishuang used Xiaoyuzai's clothes to lure her to Lion's Roar Ridge.

It has to be said that Fang Baishuang really put a lot of thought into scouting this dilapidated house beforehand.

This dilapidated house was built by the production team to make it easier to guard the fields at night, and it stands there all alone on the edge of the village.

The land contracting system has now been implemented, and this house has been uninhabited for many years.

Although the house belongs to Gouzi Village, it is still a short distance away from the village.

So the child was crying his heart out, but no one in the village heard him.

The small wooden door was locked from the outside, but Zhang Jizhou kicked it open with one foot.

Fang Yan rushed in first. The room was pitch black, but she still managed to catch the child tightly. "Little Fish, Mommy's here. Don't cry."

Little Fish was playing with his neighbor's older brother and sister in the afternoon when he suddenly needed to poop. On his way home, he felt a pain in his neck and then he lost consciousness.

He had just woken up and found himself surrounded by darkness. He called out "Mommy" several times, but no one answered him. The little guy was so frightened that he started crying loudly.

"Mommy, it's all black, I'm scared," Little Fish said, clinging tightly to Fang Yan's neck.

Fang Baishuang had stripped him of his clothes and shoes, leaving him completely naked.

Although it's early autumn now, it's still quite hot during the day, but there's still a slight chill in the air in the mornings and evenings.

Fang Yan was about to unbutton her clothes when she saw Zhang Jizhou take off his mini jacket and hand it to her, saying, "Use this to wrap the child up."

"Mom, is he a bad person?"

Right now, the light is too dim to see people clearly. And the two days I spent with Zhang Jizhou weren't very pleasant, so Xiaoyuzai had long forgotten about Zhang Jizhou.

Fang Yan wrapped his coat around his neck. "He's not a bad person. It's Daddy who's back. Daddy and Mommy came to pick up Xiaoyuzai and take him home."

Hearing that it was his father, Xiaoyuzi nestled on Fang Yan's shoulder and fell silent.

Fang Yan coaxed him, "Because Daddy is very capable, that's why Mommy found Little Fish so quickly. What should Little Fish say to Daddy?"

I wonder if it's because Zhang Jizhou hasn't come back for so many years?

Little Fish was very indifferent to him, unlike other children who were particularly dependent on their fathers.

"Thank you, Dad," Little Fish said softly.

Although he was already a father, Zhang Jizhou had actually spent little time with his child and didn't know how to interact with him. He reached out to him, saying, "Daddy will hug you."

Little Fish ignored him completely, nuzzled its head against Fang Yan's neck, found a comfortable spot, and held her tightly as if afraid someone would take it away.

Knowing that he was still shaken from the fright, Fang Yan hugged him tightly, trying to give the child as much security as possible.

As she walked out of the small, dilapidated house with Zhang Jizhou, she said, "I'll carry you."

Back in the village, they ran into Zhang Zongde and his men who were still searching for the child. "Uncle, the child has been found."

"Where was it found?"

As Fang Yan walked, she recounted Fang Baishuang's story: "I don't know what she was planning, but she knocked Xiaoyuzi unconscious and hid him in that small house over there in the village where she guards the fields."

"What a tragedy! Any man who marries such a wicked woman is truly cursed!"

Upon hearing this, Aunt Wang and the others immediately began to hurl insults at Fang Baishuang.

The child has finally been found, and it's getting late; everyone needs to hurry home for dinner.

After Fang Yan and Zhang Jizhou thanked everyone, the group dispersed and went home.

"How do we get this way?" Zhang Jizhou asked after walking with Fang Yan for a while.

Fang Yan then realized that she had forgotten to tell him about separating the family property.

So he briefly explained the matter of dividing the family property to him, saying, "You can ask your uncle for details and verification. Also, for the next three months, you need to send your allowance to me."

She emphasized this point.

But he also explained, "Of course, if we go through with the divorce tomorrow, then you can give your allowance to whoever you want."

Entering the courtyard in the dark, Zhang Jizhou walked ahead, groped around inside the house, turned on the light, and watched Fang Yan carry the child in. "Shouldn't we give the child a bath? I'll go boil some water."

He was filled with mixed feelings. So many things had happened at home, and even though he was in the county town, he still couldn't help in the slightest.

Thinking about how Fang Yan had shouldered so much responsibility all by herself, Zhang Jizhou suddenly felt quite guilty.

This guilt also extends to Fang Yanyan, who has long since passed away.

Previously, Zhang Jizhou always believed that he had fulfilled his responsibilities as a son, a husband, and a father.
