Chapter 141: Time to Thread the Needle

Ever since the persimmons were ripened at home, Xiangyang and Zhouzhou would skip and hop back to the family compound every afternoon, not even bothering to put down their schoolbags, and would run to Zhou Qiqi's house, shouting that they wanted to go to the cellar to see if the persimmons were ripe.

Every time, Zhou Qiqi would stand in the yard, hands on her hips, and shout at the top of her lungs, "It's not ready yet! It won't be that fast! Wait a little longer!"

But Xiangyang didn't believe it at all and insisted on dragging Zhouzhou into the cellar.

Zhou Qiqi and Shen Huaichuan went to the market several times in the past few days and bought a lot of things.

Chinese cabbage, radishes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, green onions, as well as bright red apples, golden pears, and dried fruits such as walnuts and chestnuts with their hard shells, were carried back in trip after trip.

The cellar was quickly filled to the brim, with large and small boxes stacked high, piled up like small hills.

Xiangyang is a clumsy kid; he never looks where he's going.

Zhou Qiqi's heart was pounding, afraid that he might accidentally bump into something or burn his hand with lime water while rushing to grab the persimmons.

So they followed at a distance.

But after following along for a while, Zhou Qiqi realized that her worries were completely unnecessary.

Although Xiangyang is always jumping around, as soon as Zhouzhou glares at him, the little guy immediately wilted and stood there obediently, not daring to breathe.

The two men lay on the edge of the water tank like thieves, one mouthing "cooked," the other shaking his head vigorously saying "not cooked."

Xiangyang couldn't help but reach out to grab it, but Zhouzhou reacted quickly, grabbing the flashlight in her hand and slapping it on the back of his hand.

Xiangyang cried out "Ouch!" and quickly pulled his hand back, standing obediently. His pitiful look was so endearing that it was hard not to laugh.

Looking at Zhouzhou like this, Zhou Qiqi couldn't help but feel emotional.

Zhou Shuhua had previously said that Zhouzhou was a quiet little girl, but after spending more than two months together, she finally understood her.

This girl is nothing like the quiet girl she seems; she's a real firecracker!

She's very feisty, and has a strong, courageous spirit. She takes revenge on the spot and is very principled.

And there's one thing she has in common with, which is that she's very good at manipulating people!

Xiangyang, that kid, is a mischievous monkey in the compound, but with her, he's as well-behaved as a kitten.

As long as the persimmons aren't ripe, they'll stay in the sun every single day, coming over to check on them.

I ran around for four days straight, until the afternoon of the fifth day.

When Zhou Qiqi went to the cellar to get white radishes, she unexpectedly discovered that two persimmons that had been placed with the apples had softened.

She was delighted and thought she should take them out quickly so that Zhouzhou and Xiangyang could each have one.

Just as it was time to leave, Zhouzhou returned, but Xiangyang was nowhere to be seen.

Zhou Qiqi couldn't sit still any longer, so she took the persimmons and headed towards Deng Cuixiang's house.

As soon as I entered, I saw that Deng Cuixiang could not straighten her back, but she was still struggling to sit in front of the stove and cook noodles in the sunshine.

Seeing that she couldn't straighten her back, Zhou Qiqi quickly went over to help her to the bed and gave her a pillow to lean on.

"Sister Cuixiang, you're injured like this, how can you still cook? Have you been to the clinic yet?"

Then he looked around the house and asked, "Where is Battalion Commander Jiang?"

"He went to another city for training these past two days and isn't home."

Deng Cuixiang winced in pain, slowly sat down, shook her head weakly, and looked helpless.

"I didn't go to the clinic either; it wouldn't have helped anyway, since there were no doctors there to treat me."

Zhou Qiqi frowned, her face full of doubt.

"Why isn't there a doctor? Isn't Lin Yao one?"

Although Lin Yao seems to have only mediocre skills, she should have no problem applying a plaster or something.

Upon hearing Lin Yao's name, Deng Cuixiang immediately curled her lip, her face full of disdain.

"Hey, you know, they said they assigned a doctor, but Lin Yao is always taking leave. At first, she said she needed to organize the medicine cabinet, then she said she had a cold and fever, and the other day she said she was preparing for her wedding. Basically, she's not going to treat anyone properly. All the military wives in our military dependents' area are complaining, saying that having a doctor is no different than not having one at all..."

marry?

Zhou Qiqi's heart skipped a beat.

I already felt incredibly uncomfortable seeing Lin Yao in the military dependents' area before. Now that she's getting married, I reckon Xu Shu will probably come to the military dependents' area as well.

She truly didn't want to have anything to do with Xu Shu anymore. She silently prayed that the two of them could get married somewhere else, and definitely not in the military dependents' area, otherwise not only Xu Shu, but perhaps Xu Shu's parents would also come along.

Thinking of Xu Shu's parents, Zhou Qiqi couldn't help but shudder.

Although Xu Shu was a scumbag, he hadn't been seen for seven or eight years, and apart from the matter of breaking off the engagement, he hadn't tormented the original owner much.

But Xu Shu's parents were absolutely the worst of the worst. They treated the original owner of the body like an object in the house, constantly beating and scolding her, and venting all their resentment at not being able to see their son on her.

In their eyes, raising the original owner was an immense favor, and the original owner had to serve them like a servant.

If they found out that "Zhou Qiqi" not only didn't marry Xu Shu, but also took the opportunity to marry a military officer, who knows what kind of trouble they would cause.

"Alright, let's stop talking about them."

Zhou Qiqi shook her head vigorously, trying to shake off all those unpleasant things.

She turned her gaze back to Deng Cuixiang's waist and said firmly.

"Your back needs to be checked out at the hospital. I'll have Qin Lei drive you to the Municipal Military Hospital."

Deng Cuixiang quickly waved her hand, forcing a smile.

"No need, no need. It's just a minor ailment. I've had it before, and it'll be fine after a couple of days of rest. There's no need to make such a special trip. Besides, the doctors are all off duty now. My little problem really doesn't warrant going to the emergency room."
