Early summer, 1993.
The campus of S City's No. 1 High School was very quiet, with only the endless chirping of cicadas.
It was the crucial time for the mock exam, and the corridors of the teaching building were deserted, without a soul in sight.
Only a boy and a girl were standing against the wall outside the classroom of Class 1, Grade 12, clearly having been kicked out by the teacher as punishment.
The boy was Jiang Xiangyang, eighteen years old, and already over 1.8 meters tall, tall and strong.
He wore a military green tank top, with a blue polyester long-sleeved shirt loosely draped over it.
His sleeves were haphazardly rolled up to his elbows, revealing his tanned forearms with smooth and firm muscle lines.
He was wearing a pair of army green polyester trousers, with dirty knees.
He was wearing a pair of Warrior brand basketball shoes, with mud splattered on the edges, clearly indicating that he had just been running around on the court.
His hair was shaved very short, the most common buzz cut these days.
This outfit, among high school boys born in 1993, is considered casual yet spirited, clearly indicating a boy from a privileged background.
Moreover, it must be said that this young man was born with the best qualities of his parents.
He had a square face, deep-set eyes, and a high nose bridge; his eyes, in particular, were dazzlingly bright.
The way his lips curve upwards when he smiles is a perfect replica of his father, Battalion Commander Jiang, when he was young.
Yet the occasional glint of wit in his eyes clearly showed that he had inherited the charm of his mother, Deng Cuixiang.
He has that kind of heroic spirit that makes young girls turn around and take a second look when he walks down the street.
But upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that this kid is not one to stay still at all.
He was scratching his head, lowering his voice, and persistently pestering the girl next to him:
"Zhouzhou... Chenduzhou! Oh dear, Zhouzhou, I really know I was wrong! Please, have mercy and say something to me, okay?"
The girl next to him was Shen Duzhou.
She wore a moon-white dress, simple in style, without any fancy decorations, except for a few slender bamboo leaves embroidered with dark green silk thread at the neckline and hem.
This dress is clearly Zhou Qiqi's creation. The fabric is comfortable, the cut is perfect, and it exudes an indescribable elegance in its simplicity, making Shen Duzhou look serene and graceful.
Her long, black hair was tied into a high ponytail and secured with a bright red silk bow hair tie. The bright color stood out against her simple outfit, making her skin appear even whiter.
On his wrist was a trendy silver digital watch that gleamed in the sunlight, clearly worth a fortune.
Below that were a pair of clean white socks and shiny black round-toed leather shoes. Her whole outfit was neat and tidy, with nothing on her head.
It was a stark contrast to the mud monkey next to him.
Moreover, Shen Duzhou was very tall, about 1.7 meters, with a slender and upright figure.
Her features were very beautiful, but not in a charming or glamorous way.
She has fair skin, clear and cool eyes, a delicate nose, and thin lips that are always pursed into a straight line.
What's most special is that aura; standing there quietly, detached yet pure.
Her high ponytail was perfectly styled, revealing her smooth forehead.
Strangely enough, she doesn't look like anyone in the Shen family.
She is neither like her father, Shen Huaiyue, nor like her mother, Lin Wei.
She bears no resemblance whatsoever to her aunt Zhou Qiqi, and seems to be a person of her own.
At this moment, she simply leaned quietly against the wall, her gaze fixed on the parallel bars on the distant playground, ignoring Jiang Xiangyang's incessant chatter.
Or perhaps she had long since gotten used to it and simply treated the noise as background noise.
Seeing that she was so unyielding, Jiang Xiangyang became really anxious and blurted out something reckless:
"Ancestors! Will you kneel down and kowtow to me? Please don't ignore me!"
As he spoke, he bent his leg and actually made a move to slide onto the ground.
This is a school corridor!
If some passing teacher or student saw this, what would become of them? It would spread throughout the entire school tomorrow and become the new topic of conversation.
Chen Duzhou was furious. He suppressed the urge to roll his eyes and didn't look at her. He finally managed to squeeze out three words through gritted teeth:
"What's wrong with it?"
She knew that if she ignored Jiang Xiangyang now, the kid would definitely do something even bigger.
But as soon as she opened her mouth, Jiang Xiangyang's expression immediately changed.
His previous pitiful look vanished instantly, replaced by a wide grin as he grinned broadly, revealing two rows of bright white teeth. He leaned closer with a cheeky smile, admitting his mistake:
"I shouldn't have thrown things around so carelessly! That crumpled piece of paper was supposed to be on the test paper, how did it end up hitting your head? Hehe, your hair is all scratched up, it's practically a magpie's nest now..."
As he spoke, he reached out to touch the horse's tail on the sunken ferry.
"Jiang Xiangyang! You..."
Shen Duzhou dodged his hand, feeling a pang of regret; she shouldn't have been so soft-hearted as to talk to him.
This person has always been like this since childhood; they become overjoyed with the slightest bit of kindness and have no sense of propriety whatsoever.
They have no idea what they did wrong, yet they're still making sarcastic remarks!
Jiang Xiangyang, oblivious to the danger, continued to tease her:
"Zhouzhou, why do you always utter three-word phrases at a time? It's like sending a telegram! Can't you just say a few more words? It's so much easier for you..."
Shen Duzhou knew that arguing with him was a waste of breath, so he kicked his shin with his white canvas shoes.
Jiang Xiangyang cried out "Ouch!" and nimbly jumped back, shouting:
"No, no, no! Grandma! I was wrong! I was really wrong! Please don't kick it, if you hurt it, who will run errands to buy you soda!"
