The clinic was filled with the smell of disinfectant and Li Hongjuan's deliberately amplified wails.
Seeing that the nurse hadn't come out yet,
Zhou Qiqi hugged the slightly trembling Zhouzhou even tighter, her sharp gaze sweeping over the wailing Li Hongjuan and her two sons who were also crying, before finally landing on the anxious Zhu Yingying's face.
"Yingying, what exactly happened?"
Zhu Yingying seemed to be holding back a lot of anger, and quickly moved closer to Zhou Qiqi, speaking rapidly and urgently:
"I took Zhouzhou to the phone booth to answer a call. Li Hongjuan came with her two sons. She went in to make the call, and the two boys were playing at the door. They saw that the other children were talking to Zhouzhou and no one was paying attention to them, so they ran to Li Hongjuan to complain. As soon as Li Hongjuan came out, she started cursing Zhouzhou, calling her a 'little mute' and a 'little devil'..."
Zhu Yingying's face turned red with anger:
“Zhouzhou ignored her completely and tried to pull me away, but Li Hongjuan wouldn’t let it go. She grabbed Zhouzhou’s arm and pulled her back! I saw it with my own eyes. She dragged Zhouzhou and slammed her head against her stomach! Zhouzhou stumbled and scraped her hand!”
Zhou Qiqi felt sorry for Zhouzhou and took his hand to check on him.
Sure enough, a large patch of skin on the little girl's delicate arm was scraped, oozing blood and covered in dirt; it looked painful.
But the little girl kept her head down and endured it. Only when her aunt grabbed her hand did she pout her lips in grievance, but she still didn't shed a single tear.
Zhou Qiqi felt as if she had been pricked by a needle.
She took out a handkerchief and carefully wiped the dust off Zhouzhou.
Li Hongjuan also saw the little girl's wound.
"You're talking nonsense!"
She sat up from the examination bed, her voice shrill.
"Zhu Yingying, stop making baseless accusations! I meant well. I saw the kids were arguing and wanted to ask Zhouzhou to play with Xiao Lei and Xiao Feng. What did I say that was mean? This little brat is holding a grudge! He's still angry about that little thing when Xiao Lei and Xiao Feng accidentally locked him in the room! He was deliberately trying to get revenge by pushing me! So many eyes saw it! Old Zhang in the phone booth, and Sister Wang and Sister Chen who were passing by, didn't they all see it? It was she who pushed me!"
As she spoke, she pretended to touch her belly and cried out.
"Ouch... my stomach... it hurts so much... she must have pushed me out and hurt me! You have to pay me! Nutritional expenses, lost wages, and compensation for emotional distress, not a penny less!"
"Oh,"
Zhou Qiqi sneered, "Li Hongjuan, you said Zhouzhou pushed you and hurt you?"
Li Hongjuan patted the bed board, "It's absolutely true! Everyone saw it! The nurse also said I was badly injured!"
"OK."
Zhou Qiqi nodded decisively and looked into the inner room.
“This clinic only has one nurse on duty, not even a proper doctor. She said you were injured, but I don’t believe it. Who knows if your ‘stomach ache’ is real or not? Since you keep saying you’re badly injured, let’s not waste time here.”
As she spoke, she gestured with her chin outwards.
"Let's go to the military hospital right now! We'll go to the emergency room, do a full set of tests, and let the doctors at the hospital use their equipment to tell us whether it's an injury or an illness. Only a written diagnosis report counts! We'll compensate you every penny we're responsible for, but if the tests show you're fine..."
Zhou Qiqi's eyes suddenly sharpened, "Then we need to settle this score for your extortion!"
Upon hearing this, Li Hongjuan's wailing stopped abruptly, and a hint of panic appeared on her face.
Go to the military hospital? That would be terrible!
She was just faking it; at most, she was just feeling a bit resentful. She couldn't possibly withstand the scrutiny of the instruments.
If it turns out she's innocent, that crazy woman Zhou Qiqi will definitely sue her!
Her eyes darted around, and she suddenly raised her voice, shouting in a fierce but weak tone:
"Zhou Qiqi! Stop trying to scare people! You look down on the clinic, don't you? Who do you think you are!"
She pointed to the inner room.
"Do you know who this nurse is? Her family has been practicing traditional Chinese medicine for generations, and she's incredibly skilled! She's just young, that's why she works as a nurse here! In the few days she's been here, everyone praises her for her excellent work in treating patients and dispensing medicine! I trust her! She said I was injured, so I am injured! You want a hospital? Who knows if you're trying to collude with the doctor to sabotage me on the way here? I'm not going anywhere! I want this nurse to treat me! Only her word counts!"
"You insist on going to the hospital? I think you're just guilty and trying to renege on your debt!"
She insisted that she only recognized the junior nurse, and tried her best to flatter her, attempting to pin her "authority" on this person who was clearly biased towards her.
The curtain to the inner room was lifted, and a young nurse with a round face wearing a white coat came out.
As soon as Li Hongjuan saw her come out, she immediately cried out "Ouch! Ouch!" even louder, clutching her stomach and writhing on the examination bed, all the while winking at the nurse and shouting:
"Nurse! You're finally here! Take a look at me! This little brat is so ruthless, that push he gave me was really hard! My stomach... ouch... feels so heavy, and it's cramping in waves... Is... is it going to be lost?"
Her voice was pitiful, and every word she spoke was meant to coax the nurse into continuing the conversation.
The nurse ignored her words, walked straight to the bedside, deftly lifted Li Hongjuan's clothes, pressed the cold stethoscope head onto her stomach, and listened carefully.
Li Hongjuan was still whimpering as she described the "horrific situation".
After listening for a while, the nurse straightened up and looked at Li Hongjuan with a puzzled expression:
"Sister Hongjuan, what did you say? Who said you were going to have a miscarriage?"
Her voice was a little childish, like a little kid's, but her tone was very firm.
"Your baby's heartbeat is very stable, beating steadily, even more stable than my heartbeat when I have low blood sugar. I've looked at you for a long time, and there isn't even a red mark on your belly, and you're not injured anywhere on your body!"
