"You...sit down and rest for a while, don't tire yourself out."
After saying that, he almost fled out the door.
Zhou Qiqi watched her almost "escape" away and couldn't help but smile.
Could this be considered... a guilty conscience?
Just then, there was a light, childlike knocking at the door.
Zhouzhou rubbed her eyes, standing at the kitchen door in a milky white pajama set, her jet-black hair still a little messy, like a little fluffy ball that had just woken up.
She was clearly drawn in by the aroma; her big eyes sparkled as she stared intently at the pot, her little nose twitching as she inhaled the scent.
"Zhouzhou is awake?"
Zhou Qiqi immediately put on a gentle smile, temporarily putting her backache and pain behind her.
"Hurry up and brush your teeth and wash your face. The red bean and milk porridge will be ready soon. Uncle went to get some meat buns. We'll eat when he comes back."
Zhouzhou nodded vigorously, her little face full of anticipation, then turned and ran away.
A short while later, Shen Huaichuan returned, carrying a heavy lunchbox.
The dining table was set up quickly.
Three small bowls were filled with sweet and glutinous red bean milk porridge, and a lunchbox was filled with plump white steamed buns.
There was also a small dish of pickled radishes that Sister Cuixiang gave us; they were bright red and looked delicious.
Zhou Qiqi added a small spoonful of condensed milk to Zhouzhou's porridge bowl, and the little girl immediately scooped it up with a small spoon and ate it, her cheeks puffed out like a little squirrel.
Zhou Qiqi also picked up a spoon; the porridge was at the perfect temperature and had a smooth, creamy texture.
She sipped the drink, a warm current spreading from her stomach, which even seemed to soothe her aching back.
Shen Huaichuan sat opposite her, eating his steamed buns with practiced ease, but his gaze kept falling on her.
Seeing her slightly furrowed brows and then relaxed expression as she sipped her porridge, and seeing her quietly raise her hand to press her lower back... his eyes flickered, and he picked up a meat bun and placed it on the plate next to her bowl.
Eat more.
He said just three words, his voice still deep, yet carrying an indescribable warmth.
Zhou Qiqi looked up at him and met his deep eyes.
The heat and storm of last night were gone, leaving only a calm, reassuring warmth, and a hint of... deeply hidden apology and heartache.
She didn't say anything, but simply picked up the warm meat bun and took a small bite.
A little bit of meat juice spilled out from the corner of my mouth, it was so delicious, and the dough was soft and fluffy, spreading in my mouth with the aroma of meat, it was so warm.
For some reason, a nonsensical thought suddenly popped into her head.
Is this what home tastes like?
