Seeing how exhausted she was, Shen Huaichuan said with heartache, "You lie down, I can carry it by myself."
Zhou Qiqi shook her head:
"No way! There's so much stuff! The refrigerator and washing machine are so heavy! How many can you carry by yourself? And what about all the other odds and ends? Besides, it's the middle of the night, Mom and Dad and Zhouzhou are asleep. What if we make a lot of noise and wake them up? Let's do it together, be quiet, and finish quickly!"
That's all money! How many pieces of clothing would I have to sell to earn that back?
We absolutely cannot take any risks!
Without saying a word, she put on a coat and pulled Shen Huaichuan out the door.
The rain came very suddenly.
When the two went out, it was just a light drizzle. But by the time they had carried their most valuable items, the refrigerator and washing machine, back into the house, the rain had become heavy and dense, turning into a moderate rain.
By the time all the appliances had been safely moved, it was pouring rain outside, the rain pounding loudly on the ground.
However, the rain came hard and went quickly.
Shen Huaichuan told Zhou Qiqi to wait under the eaves while he carried all the odds and ends into the cellar one trip at a time.
Zhou Qiqi wasn't idle either. Seeing that her parents-in-law's small bags were on the cabinet by the window, afraid they would get wet from the rain, she went over and helped tidy them up.
While tidying up, I found a few scattered pills under the cabinet. They looked like they had been stepped on, covered in dirt and grime.
She didn't know much about medicine and didn't know what kind of medicine it was, so she didn't dare to throw it away carelessly. She carefully put it in a small paper bag and temporarily put it in the drawer.
After the two of them finished their work, something amazing happened.
The rain that was pouring down just now stopped abruptly!
If it weren't for the dripping water from the eaves, Zhou Qiqi would have wondered if the rain was just her imagination.
The rain mysteriously lessened again, almost stopping completely!
Looking at the suddenly clear night sky, and then at her and Shen Huaichuan's disheveled appearance, Zhou Qiqi was both amused and exasperated, and stomped her foot in anger:
"Good heavens! Are you playing a joke on me?! If I had known it was just a fleeting affair, I wouldn't have gone through all this trouble!"
But things can change unexpectedly, and no one can predict the future.
Moving is better than not moving at all. These days, appliances probably aren't very waterproof. If they get damaged by rain, it'll be too late to cry.
She yawned widely and waved her hand, "Alright, alright, we've already moved it, let's go back to sleep."
Back inside, the two realized that their hair was already mostly soaked with rain and sweat, and their clothes were damp and clinging to their bodies.
I quickly found some dry pajamas to change into, but my hair wouldn't dry in a short time, and the dampness on my body wouldn't dissipate quickly either.
Afraid of passing on moisture to Zhouzhou, the two simply stayed far away from the child and snuggled together on the edge of the bed to sleep.
Before going to sleep, Zhou Qiqi remembered that she and Shen Huaichuan were squeezed on the edge of the bed, deliberately far away from the wall, leaving spacious room for Zhouzhou.
But when I woke up groggily the next morning, I found that somehow I had ended up sleeping on the innermost side, right next to the wall.
There was now a soft little person in my arms, moving restlessly, and looking like they were about to wake up.
She paused for a moment, then subconsciously turned her head to look at the other side of the bed.
They saw that Shen Huaichuan had already woken up. He was dressed and sitting on the edge of the bed, a smile on his lips, quietly watching the two of them.
Zhou Qiqi rubbed her eyes, and asked groggily:
"What...what's going on? How did Zhouzhou get into the middle? When did she arrive?"
Shen Huaichuan smiled and lowered his voice, saying:
"It was late at night. The little girl found her way here by herself while she was sleeping. I wanted to take her back, but she was fast asleep, clutching your clothes. I couldn't bear to wake her, so I just left it at that."
He pointed to the small blanket that had been folded into a neat square next to him.
"Here, the big blanket is for you two, I'll make do with hers."
As they were talking, Zhouzhou opened her eyes, her long eyelashes fluttering a few times.
Hearing the adults talking about her, the little girl felt a little embarrassed and buried her face even deeper into Zhou Qiqi's arms.
Zhou Qiqi knew the child lacked a sense of security, so she didn't say anything, but instead leaned down and kissed her hard on the top of her head. Then she asked Shen Huaichuan:
What time is it?
"What? It's already eight o'clock!"
"It's eight o'clock?!"
Zhou Qiqi was startled; her sleepiness vanished instantly.
"Oh dear! It's so late! No, no, I have to get up and cook quickly, or my aunt and uncle will go hungry!"
She was about to get up as she spoke.
Shen Huaichuan held her down and laughed:
"Don't worry, I got up a long time ago and went to the cafeteria to get breakfast. There are big meat buns and millet porridge on the table, just waiting for you two to get up and eat."
"You're just waiting for us? That's so inconvenient..."
Zhou Qiqi's face flushed, and she quickly patted Zhouzhou gently in her arms, "Baby, let's get up quickly, your grandpa and grandma are waiting."
At that moment, Qin Peilan's gentle voice came from the doorway:
"No rush, no rush, get up slowly, wear something warm, it's cold today, don't catch a cold."
Zhou Qiqi understood that her mother-in-law hadn't seen her granddaughter all night and missed her terribly, which was why she had come over.
She didn't say much, quickly got up, and dressed Zhouzhou as well.
Stepping out of the room, I saw that my parents-in-law were already seated at the dining table.
Upon hearing the door open, the two immediately turned to look, their faces beaming with kind smiles, and greeted each other:
"You're awake? Quick, go wash up first, and then come over for dinner."
Zhou Qiqi was initially worried that her in-laws would be unhappy if she woke up late, but seeing the genuine smiles on their faces, her slight anxiety vanished instantly.
