Chapter 19 Little Hooligan
“Not yet… not yet.”
Ye Xiaoya behind her tightly grasped her sister's hand, obviously frightened by her cousin's appearance, her hands shaking constantly.
The door to the east room was not open, but the door to the main room was. Li Cuihua buttoned her clothes while complaining:
"Xiao Lin, is it ok for you to not come back all night? I think you have gotten used to it. Tell me, where did you go last night? You ran away all night without even saying hello. Are you trying to kill yourself?"
Li Cuihua ran across the yard and quickly pulled Ye Xiaolin in and closed the door. In this era, if a girl stayed out all night, people would definitely gossip about her.
Ye Xiaomei didn't bother to meddle in other people's business and took the opportunity to go out.
Ye Xiaoya was timid. After leaving the village, she looked up at her sister timidly: "Sister, was Sister Xiaolin beaten up?"
Ye Xiaomei shook her head: "I don't know, Xiaoya, we just need to take care of ourselves."
In his memory, he recalled some of the most difficult times for their mother. When their mother was beaten, even their honest father just sat in the yard and endured it without saying a word, while their aunt and two cousins would stand in the yard and add fuel to the fire.
At that time, no one would help them, which also made Ye Xiaomei learn that she would definitely help people who were good to her, but she would never help people who were not good to her.
"Well, sister, why should we rush to buy things when we don't have any money?" Ye Xiaoya felt very cool when she walked in her new skirt. Even if she didn't buy anything, she wanted to hang out in crowded places for fun.
"I'll think of a way. How about I buy you a pair of crystal sandals later?" Ye Xiaomei rubbed her sister's head.
"That's great. Thank you, sister. Many of my classmates are wearing it." Ye Xiaoya danced with her hands and feet together, her two braids bouncing.
Ye Xiaomei pulled the thick long braid behind her head to her chest. She calculated that such a long braid could be sold for seventy or eighty yuan.
When she arrived at the county, Ye Xiaomei went to the barber shop first.
When she came out, several people passing by on the street couldn't help but look at Ye Xiaomei a few more times.
Her neat short hair revealed her small ears. Her bangs just reached her eyebrows, which made her eyes look big and round. Her thin pink lips and fair skin made her look more like a porcelain doll.
"Sister, you...you sold your hair?" Ye Xiaoya pouted with tears in her eyes.
She remembered clearly that her sister loved her hair the most. Many girls in the village envied her sister's long hair, which was black, thick and shiny.
Ye Xiaomei chuckled and said cheerfully, "Sell it. It can still grow. I'll buy you some shoes and some seeds to grow vegetables. With the rabbit hair, we will definitely have some change this year. From now on, you don't have to envy other kids who go to the canteen, ok!"
Ye Xiaomei took out two yuan and gave it to Xiaoya: "You can use these two yuan to buy candy."
Ye Xiaoya looked at the two yuan in her hand with joy and excitement. She folded it up and stuffed it into her pocket: "Sister, can I buy a bag of Tang Monk's meat when I get back? One dime a bag."
"Okay, I'll buy three bags."
"Boss, give me these shoes to try on." Ye Xiaomei strolled around the shoe store.
The boss' eyes rolled around. He had never seen such a pretty girl before. Which village was she from?
"Boss?" Ye Xiaomei found that the boss was staring at her.
"Oh, right here." The boss was a dark and strong man in his thirties. He suddenly came to his senses and his face turned red.
Ye Xiaomei pressed Xiaoya onto a small stool and squatted down to help her try on shoes. Xiaoya pursed her lips and lowered her head in embarrassment the whole time, but her eyes were shining brightly. She thought all the pairs looked good.
"Little girl, this royal blue one is very beautiful. Do you like it?" Ye Xiaomei looked left and right.
Ye Xiaoya was not picky and said, "If my sister says it looks good, then it looks good."
Ye Xiaomei picked out another pair for her mother. Her mother worked in the fields all day, and the heels of her shoes were worn out by her steps. These sandals were better. They would not get wet or dirty whether she stepped on mud or waded through water.
After leaving the shoe store, the boss looked at the employee and said, "Why haven't I seen this girl before? Which village is she from? Have you seen her before?"
The waiter was a girl. He stretched his head to take a closer look. Her back was particularly eye-catching in the crowded crowd. Even though she was dressed like someone from an ordinary family, she was still eye-catching:
"No, I haven't seen her. She looks so fair, I think she's not a country girl."
She looks more like the pampered daughter of an official's family.
After Ye Xiaomei sold the seeds, she bought a bundle of sweet potato vines in a basket. She could just cut them and plant them when she got home.
At the breakfast stall, Ye Xiaomei ordered two tea eggs for one yuan, two bowls of oil tea for two yuan, and two fried dough sticks for sixty cents.
The first time Ye Xiaoya ate breakfast outside, her eyes were rolling around. She felt it was embarrassing to eat on the street.
"Eat, no one is watching us." Seeing that she was shy and ate like she was scraping with her teeth, Ye Xiaomei peeled a tea leaf egg and stuffed it into her mouth: "Eat it with big mouthfuls, okay."
Ye Xiaomei's eyes sparkled as she watched her sister eat with relish. She discovered a secret: she was the happiest person because she could earn money through her own ability and provide her family with enough food and drink. She felt very satisfied.
After the meal, Ye Xiaomei took a piece of toilet paper from the boss's bag and wiped Ye Xiaoya's mouth: "Is it delicious?"
"Hmm, hmm, it's so delicious, sister. It would be great if I could eat fried dough sticks every day." Ye Xiaoya stuffed the last bite of fried dough stick into her mouth, touched her bulging belly and smiled with satisfaction.
Ye Xiaomei saw it all, her heart filled with sunshine: "As long as it tastes good, if you want to eat it every day, then I'll learn how to do it."
We'll have to wait until we have more money in the future. For example, my grandma holds the eggs tightly in her hand, so if we want to eat boiled eggs, we have to rely on ourselves.
"Huh? What a coincidence?" A young couple came up to the stall.
Ye Xiaomei glanced to the side. Zhang Changjiang? The guy with a tuft of yellow hair on his forehead was the guy who sat in the back seat of the car that day.
Ye Xiaomei's heart sank, and she quickly pulled Ye Xiaoya, picked up the basket and left.
"Don't go, I'll treat you to breakfast." Zhang Changjiang walked up and held Ye Xiaomei with his arms.
When Ye Xiaoya saw that the situation was not good, she was so scared that she hid behind her sister.
"I've already eaten, so you don't have to treat me." When Ye Xiaomei turned left, he turned left as well, pacing back and forth on the street like an eagle catching chicken.
"You haven't told me which household you are from in this village, so I won't let you go." Zhang Changjiang looked Ye Xiaomei up and down with a sly smile. Her hair had been cut, which added a layer of playfulness to her gentleness. Her figure was so good that even if you looked at her a few more times, she would still be pleasing to the eyes.
The boss of the fried dough sticks shop sighed and shook his head. Everyone knew how much of a gangster Zhang Changjiang was in this area.
"Sister, I'm scared!" Ye Xiaoya murmured in a suppressed cry behind her.
"Don't be afraid, little girl. Let's go." Ye Xiaomei felt distressed. She pulled Ye Xiaoya's other hand and picked up the basket and smashed it against Zhang Changjiang's chest. A lot of sweet potato vines fell off. Ye Xiaomei didn't care and ran quickly.
"Hey, this girl is so hot." The little yellow-haired boy cheered on the side.
Zhang Changjiang, who was embarrassed, looked unhappy and said, "Is this little girl still not enough for me? You'll see what I am doing."
Ye Xiaomei watched Zhang Changjiang catch up with her. She was so panicked that she grabbed Ye Xiaoya tightly and ran through the crowd all the way to the county hospital:
"Director Li, Director Li..."
