Lu Zhixia looked at Su Lan solemnly and said, "I spent the whole afternoon with the old man selling medicine. Do you know how much money he made?"
Su Lan shook her head; how would she know how much the medicinal herbs could sell for?
Lu Zhixia raised her right hand, stretched it out, and flipped it over. "He sold it for that amount."
"Five yuan?" Su Lan thought to herself that five yuan wasn't much money.
“Over a hundred yuan! And that’s only part of it. He has a lot of medicinal herbs at home, all of which he dried and processed himself.” Lu Zhixia finished speaking and saw Su Lan’s shocked expression.
"Don't you believe me? I helped him sell them."
Su Lan knew that medicinal herbs could be sold for money, but no one had told her how to sell them.
"That old man is amazing! He has so much money!"
"I think so too, so I want to go up the mountain to take a look. If I can dig up medicinal herbs, wouldn't that be much faster money than selling ice cream?" Lu Zhixia said to Su Lan, counting on her fingers.
“Selling ice cream is time-consuming and laborious, and it depends on the weather. But we can still make money selling it these two months.”
"When the weather gets cold, no one will eat ice cream anymore, and then I won't have any income."
Su Lan nodded in agreement, "You don't need to tell me, I understand. I've been thinking about how you can make money in two months."
The factory isn't doing well right now. Otherwise, you could have your older brother use his connections to get you a job at the textile factory. Even a temporary job would be fine if you can't get a permanent one!
Lu Zhixia was deeply touched; this couple had really gone to great lengths for her.
"So what's important for me now is to make money quickly, rather than relying on these small, immediate gains to make a living."
Su Lan admired Lu Zhixia greatly for her courage; what couldn't she accomplish in the future?
“I don’t know that village very well either. I’ll go ask your brother.”
She turned around and went back into the room. The two beds were pushed together, and the children were sleeping soundly. Her husband was sleeping next to her, and she gently patted his back.
Zhou Cheng groggily opened his eyes and, through the light from outside, realized that he shouldn't have gotten up too late.
"What's wrong, honey!"
"Xiaxia! We're going to a village in Longpan Mountain. Do you know that place?"
"They're quite wealthy. I heard from others that the people there have supported several generations with the medicinal herbs from the mountains." Zhou Cheng's eyes were blurry at the moment, and he wanted to sleep a little longer, so he lay down again and turned over.
"Is that village dangerous?" Su Lan patted her husband's back again after he fell asleep.
Zhou Cheng was woken up again and could only sit up helplessly. "Wife, what do you want to ask? Just ask it all at once."
"Is the village dangerous? I'll ask you one more time." Su Lan was also worried about her husband being too tired to sleep, so her voice became a little weaker.
"There's no real danger for her, but there are mountains right behind the village, and there are bound to be snakes, insects, and rodents. She should be careful of wild animals if she goes there!" Zhou Cheng yawned widely. "What is Xia going to that village for?"
"She said she wanted to gather medicinal herbs." At this moment, Su Lan was already worried about Lu Zhixia's safety; those deep mountains and forests must be very dangerous.
“She’s unpredictable.” Zhou Cheng reached for the cigarettes next to his pillow, took one out, lit it, and took a puff.
He was fully awake, seeing his wife looking distracted.
What's wrong with you now?
“I was thinking about how to persuade her. She said she met an old man who said he could take her up the mountain to collect medicinal herbs.”
"Really?!"
"Would I lie to you? She's right outside! This whole thing is way too risky. What if she's in danger?"
Su Lan watched as her husband put on his slippers and took a few steps out the door.
So she quickly followed him out, afraid that her husband might say something inappropriate.
Lu Zhixia was not surprised when she saw Zhou Cheng suddenly enter. She picked up her bag from the bed and hung it on her body.
"I heard from your sister-in-law that an old man you know can take you up the mountain to collect herbs?" Zhou Cheng said anxiously.
Lu Zhixia tidied her hair in front of the mirror, looking completely at ease.
"Yes, I met him yesterday afternoon. He's an old doctor who lives in that village. I saw that the medicinal herbs were quite valuable, so I was thinking that if I could go up the mountain now to collect a batch of herbs and then resell them, I would have some money."
"Is that person surnamed Bai?" Zhou Cheng then asked.
Lu Zhixia turned to look at him, "Brother Dacheng, do you know him?"
“I know this person.” Zhou Cheng smiled happily. “Six months ago, a colleague of mine was injured, and we carried a door panel to take him to the hospital.”
The bleeding from his leg wouldn't stop, but luckily he ran into this old man who applied some white medicinal powder, which finally stopped the bleeding.
"I see." Lu Zhixia thought it was really a coincidence that Old Master Bai and Zhou Cheng, two people who had nothing in common, actually knew each other.
Zhou Cheng continued, "Later, the man's life was saved. He wanted to thank his savior, and after some inquiries, we learned that the old man's surname was Bai. So we brought him valuable gifts to express our gratitude."
"So it's okay for the girl to go?" Su Lan asked as she came in.
"Yes, nothing will happen. Old Master Bai is a good man." Zhou Cheng put his arm around his wife's waist. "Don't worry!"
Su Lan quickly pushed his hand away, "What are you saying? The girl is still here!"
Zhou Cheng then belatedly realized his mistake and laughed awkwardly.
Lu Zhixia looked around and realized she had brought everything she needed, so she said to the couple,
"Sister Lan, I can't talk to you anymore. Time is running out, I need to catch my train."
Do you have enough money on you?
"That's enough. I have money on me, so you don't need to worry."
Lu Zhixia locked the door and then gave the key to Su Lan.
"Keep this with me for now, I'll come back to get it when I get back."
"Be careful when you go up the mountain to collect herbs!" Su Lan reminded her again, still worried.
"I will." Lu Zhixia turned and left, feeling a warmth in her heart. She hadn't felt this way in a long time.
Although they had only known each other for a few days, she could sense that the couple were genuinely worried about her.
Seeing the person turn a corner and go downstairs, Su Lan said to Zhou Cheng,
"Do you think anyone can just climb Dragon Coil Mountain like that?!"
“Their village relies on the mountains for a living, so they must have their own ways of coping.” Zhou Cheng pulled his wife to sit down at the door.
By this time, it was already dawn, and the neighbors next door were already up cooking.
Zhou Cheng gestured to his wife with his eyes, then lowered his voice and said,
"Don't tell them that Lu Zhixia went up the mountain to collect herbs to earn money. If it doesn't work out, those people will laugh at her again."
"Don't worry, I'll keep my mouth shut!" Su Lan thought that if Lu Zhixia succeeded again and made a lot of money, that would be considered a great achievement.
Lu Zhixia quickly boarded the bus, knowing that the bus station was the last stop, so she sat at the very back.
The car stopped midway.
She saw Song Lingling get into the car with some thugs beside her, noticing the red marks on her neck and her charming expression.
This means they ate the forbidden fruit!
