Chapter 54 Slap that scoundrel

Xiao Bao walked to the door and peeked out through the crack.

He was facing Pei Yuchen outside the house.

Pei Yuchen said gently in a low voice, "Xiaobao, open the door for Daddy."

Xiao Bao stared at him for a while, then suddenly turned around, facing him with his backside, and said to Song Yanzhi inside the house, "Mom, there's no one outside."

After saying that, he grabbed the book and ran off.

They showed no mercy whatsoever.

Pei Yuchen: "..."

When Song Yanzhi heard that no one was around, she didn't think much of it. After finishing her workout, she took a shower and, seeing that it was getting late, prepared to take her medicine and go to sleep.

At the Li family's house next door, Li Tiezhu groggily got up to pee. Just as he reached the door and pulled down his pants, he vaguely saw a tall, dark figure not far away.

He was so frightened that he wet his pants. "Ah—" he screamed, "There's a ghost, Grandma! There's a huge ghost standing at Xiaobao's door!"

Grandma Li's scolding came from inside the house, "Oh, you brat, you've wet your pants!"

With two loud thuds, Li Tiezhu, who had been spanked, burst into tears, still yelling, "It's all the ghost's fault at Xiaobao's door. He scared me. I didn't mean to wet my pants."

"What a ghost... Oh my, you scared me to death..." Grandma Li didn't believe it at first, but as soon as she stepped out the door, she saw a tall, dark figure standing at the Pei family's door. The figure was motionless, which gave her a big fright.

Li Tiezhu hid behind his grandmother, trembling. Seeing that his grandmother was frightened, he immediately shouted, "I told you there was a ghost, but you didn't believe me, Grandma."

Although Grandma Li was startled, she quickly regained her composure. She glared at her dazed grandson and asked uncertainly, "Isn't this Xiao Pei? Why are you standing outside instead of coming inside?"

Pei Yuchen gave a bitter smile, unable to express his grievances.

Grandma Li seemed to understand something instantly. She had noticed the strange atmosphere between the couple recently and was worried about them.

Although Wang Yanmei wasn't a good person, Xiao Pei was a child that everyone in their residential compound had watched grow up. She knew he was a good person and hoped the two of them could live happily together.

We got along really well when we got married, so how come we've suddenly become so estranged?

She sighed. She didn't want to interfere in other people's affairs, but she was worried that Pei Yuchen might have negative feelings towards Song Yanzhi because of this. So she said, "Xiao Pei, don't blame Yanzhi. She's suffered a lot over the years. When you weren't home, she had to get through it all by herself. You know what kind of temper your mother has. She's domineering and stingy. In the past, if Xiao Song felt wronged and wanted to write you a letter, she didn't dare to, because she had to let your mother see the letters she wrote before she could send them to you. She wasn't allowed to send you letters privately."

At this point, Aunt Li sighed, "That child has no one to confide in, no one to comfort her, and she has to keep everything bottled up inside. Over time, she becomes more and more timid and doesn't dare to speak up about her grievances. It's understandable that she has resentment towards you now. Don't blame her, and try to be more understanding of her, okay?"

Pei Yuchen's face turned gloomy and he asked in a deep voice, "Aunt Li, you said that Yan Zhi's letters were all sent to me through my mother?"

Aunt Li nodded and said, "You don't know? Everyone in our compound knows about this. Yanzhi is such a good daughter-in-law, sensible and obedient. She helps take care of your family, and she's even treated like a maid by your older sister from time to time. And she doesn't even get any credit for that. Your mother only gives her a tiny bit of money every month. Even though it's just the two of them, the baby is still so young, he needs some nutritional supplements. Even so, your mother is always borrowing money from her, and she's even borrowed a lot of her dowry money. Tsk tsk... I don't know what to say, but now that Yanzhi is your daughter-in-law, I hope you'll think more about her."

Pei Yuchen's expression was hidden in the shadows, and Aunt Li couldn't see it.

But she felt cold.

She realized she had offended Pei Yuchen by saying something bad about his mother, and immediately understood.

He said awkwardly, "Xiao Pei, if you don't like what I'm saying, just pretend I didn't say anything. After all, she's your mother. It's normal that you're unhappy with what I'm saying. I just feel sorry for Xiao Song."

After saying that, she hurriedly pulled her dazed grandson and turned to leave.

She had only taken two steps when Pei Yuchen's somewhat hoarse voice came from behind her, "Aunt Li, thank you."

He had already guessed that his mother had deliberately said those things about Song Yanzhi. She clearly wanted the money herself, but used Song Yanzhi and Xiaobao as a pretext to not only get the money but also ruin Song Yanzhi's image in his mind.

No matter what, Xiaobao is still her grandson, and in other words, her wife and daughter-in-law.

Even if it was to take money from himself, he wouldn't have refused to share the money with the mother and son.

But he still thought too highly of Wang Yanmei.

I even had my doubts about her...

At this moment, Pei Yuchen finally understood.

Why was Song Yanzhi so certain that he would betray her?

It turns out, it wasn't him who wronged her.

Instead, I've already wronged her...

Pei Yuchen stood still. His home was right in front of him, but he had never felt that his home was so far away.

To everyone else, his future seemed bright and promising.

However, at this moment, Pei Yuchen was surrounded by darkness.

"Creak—"

The door was suddenly pulled open in front of him, and a ray of light shone from inside the room, falling on his face.

It's a bit too bright.

Pei Yuchen narrowed his eyes and moved his stiff body, only then realizing that he had been standing for quite some time.

Inside, Song Yanzhi was wearing pajamas. She opened the door and her gaze fell on him in surprise. Her voice was tinged with fright, "Why didn't you knock? You scared me."
