Chapter 8: Filing for Divorce

He hadn't returned for five years, and the people around him were still in shock.

Realizing what had happened, they all came up to greet him warmly.

"Isn't this Xiao Pei? You're really back!"

"Oh my, it's been five years! Your auntie almost didn't recognize you."

Pei Yuchen nodded calmly.

That's just his personality, and nobody really thought anything of it.

"You're finally back. Now that you're back, Xiao Song probably won't dare to treat the child like that anymore."

"Yes, I'm not saying she's not, but the child is so young, and she's doing laundry and cleaning. Sigh, it's true that you don't care about children who aren't your own."

Pei Yuchen's thick eyebrows furrowed slightly.

Before he returned, his mother had also sent a letter saying that Song Yanzhi was unwilling to adopt the two children, and asked him to send a lot of money back.

The two children in the yard were dressed in very shabby clothes.

There are very few children in their family compound wearing clothes like that anymore.

Aunt Li came out when she heard the commotion. She was surprised to see Pei Yuchen and, seeing the people surrounding him and talking badly about Song Yanzhi, she immediately retorted, "What nonsense are you talking about? How has little Song treated them badly? You all have such nice words, why don't you try raising her yourself? Pei, don't listen to their nonsense, little Song isn't that kind of person."

Pei Yuchen remained silent.

He looked up and met Song Yanzhi standing at the door.

Song Yanzhi had just changed her son's clothes when she heard the noise and came out.

Xiao Bao is dressed in very new clothes.

This contrasted sharply with the two children squatting by the door washing clothes.

The people around couldn't help but start gossiping again.

Upon seeing Pei Yuchen, Song Yanzhi's expression remained unchanged.

Pei Yuchen was stunned, seemingly not expecting to see such a scene. After a moment, he regained his composure and walked forward unhurriedly.

Song Yanzhi also looked at him. In her previous life, she was filled with joy and shyness. Although she already had a child, she didn't even have the courage to look this man in the eye.

The sound of a man's steady footsteps approached, and sunlight shone on his sharply defined profile. His nose was straight as a mountain, and his eyes were deep. The interplay of light and shadow made his refined and handsome face appear even more profound.

He was dressed in a neat military uniform, with the buttons fastened to the very top.

He exudes a resolute and composed demeanor.

Undeniably, this man is top-notch in both physique and appearance.

No wonder the male lead's biological mother pursued him from childhood to adulthood.

Pei Yuchen keenly noticed the scrutiny and appraising look in Song Yanzhi's eyes.

He paused for a moment, then instead of questioning her about whether she had truly abused the two children, he asked, "Are you going out?"

His voice was deep and indifferent.

Song Yanzhi: "I'm not going out. It's good that you're back. I have something to talk to you about."

After saying that, she looked down at her son and said, "Xiao Bao, go play."

They didn't even intend to introduce them.

Xiao Bao had absolutely no interest in strangers, not even glancing at his own father, and immediately ran out.

In fact, he had dreamt about it. His father was tall and strong, but he had adopted two children and was very cold to him and his mother.

He doesn't like this father!

Before Pei Yuchen could even say a word to his son, he saw the man leave and stared at Song Yanzhi with a hint of suspicion in his eyes.

The way Song Yanzhi used to look at him wasn't like this. Although they hadn't interacted much, they were married after all. When she stood in front of him, she always kept her head down, her face showing a youthful shyness.

Seeing that Song Yanzhi had no intention of saying anything more, he turned around and went into the house.

Pei Yuchen paused slightly, then stepped inside.

The house is still the same as before, nothing has changed.

He looked around, carried his luggage into the room, and intended to open the wardrobe to change his clothes, but found that there wasn't a single piece of his own clothing inside.

Song Yanzhi only had two skirts.

Very few.

The dress looks brand new.

He frowned slightly.

I've sent a lot of money back home over the years. Could it be true, as my mother said in her letter, that she took all that money back to support her family?

Seeing his movements, Song Yanzhi pointed to the tattered snakeskin bag on the cabinet and said, "Your clothes are over there."

Pei Yuchen: "..."

He stopped what he was doing, turned to look at Song Yanzhi, and asked, "What do you want to talk about regarding the two children?"

He actually guessed it.

Song Yanzhi looked at him.

“Don’t worry.” Pei Yuchen’s voice was somewhat cold, but it carried a hint of reassurance. “I know it’s hard for you to accept that I’m suddenly sending two children back for you to take care of. But I only agree to raise them until they are eighteen. After they start school in two years, I can send them to the school dormitory.”

Song Yanzhi paused, surprised that Pei Yuchen would comfort her first.

Does he think that his current attitude is all about driving the two children away?

In his eyes, is he really someone who can't tolerate other people's children?

Song Yanzhi smiled and said, "That's not what I wanted to talk to you about."

Pei Yuchen raised his eyebrows in confusion.

She raised her eyelids and said calmly, "I want to file a divorce report."

Pei Yuchen: "?"

Song Yanzhi: "If we get divorced one day, I have to guarantee that Xiaobao will stay with me, and the other two children will stay with you."

Pei Yuchen: "...What did I do wrong?"

The man, who could remain unfazed even under immense pressure, was stunned by his wife's words one after another today.

It's true that she hadn't been back for five years, so I can understand her resentment.

But the first thing he said was divorce... without any warning.

For a moment, he couldn't quite keep up with Song Yanzhi's thoughts.

Song Yanzhi said, "You haven't done anything wrong, so I'm talking about the future. Right now, I'm just asking for some security. You've adopted two children, but Xiaobao only has one father. I can't guarantee that you won't be biased and hurt him. Xiaobao's situation is different from other children, and I don't want him to suffer any more harm."

Pei Yuchen understood what she meant.

She thought of her son, who had shown no reaction at all when she looked at him just now. This was not something a normal child would do, even if it was only their first meeting.

His heart skipped a beat, and in that instant, all his emotions toward the child turned into guilt.

"If this puts your mind at ease, I promise you."

Song Yanzhi nodded slightly, showing no intention of continuing the conversation, and said directly, "Then I'll go out and cook."

The topic jumped too quickly, and Pei Yuchen paused again. Had he been living away from home for too long? He couldn't keep up with Song Yanzhi's train of thought at all.

When a normal wife sees her husband who has not returned home for many years, shouldn't she greet him with pleasantries?

He stopped what he was doing and stared straight at Song Yanzhi's departing figure.

Pei Yuchen returned a few minutes later, changed his clothes, and went out again. He wanted to say something to his son, but Xiao Bao had disappeared.

Just as I was about to walk out, a small figure appeared in front of me.
