Chapter 3: One Man's Power Decides the Fate
"Don't you dare bully my mom!"
Wang Huiting's blood rushed to her head, and she rushed upstairs like a madwoman, roaring all the way.
Many people had already peeked out of the building to see what was going on, and the corridors were packed with people. When they saw Wang Huiting running over, they all stood to the side to make room for her.
When Wang Huiting ran to her own door, she saw her grandmother, Zhang Cuihua, her stepfather's mother, grabbing her mother's hair with one hand and slapping Li Mei with the other, tearing at Li Mei's clothes from time to time, all while cursing.
"You jinx! You killed one of your own, and now you've killed my son! You're living the high life while my poor son is dead. I'll see how smug you are, how arrogant you are! I'll see you find some other man!"
"Mom, I didn't..." Li Mei was hit hard and let out a painful groan.
A chubby little boy sat on the bed in the living room, holding a chicken in his arms and eating an apple in his other hand. Instead of being scared, he excitedly cheered him on.
"Grandma hit her, hit her! She deserved to spend my money!"
Wang Huiting's anger flared even more, and she rushed towards the chubby boy, grabbing a feather duster from the side and whipping him.
Caught off guard, Tong Guangyao was whipped so hard he screamed, and the chicken he was holding slipped from his grasp and flew away.
"I told you not to hit my mom! If you hit my mom, I'll beat your grandson!"
Wang Huiting showed no mercy and hit Tong Guangyao particularly hard, making him scream in pain.
"You filthy hussy! You piece of trash from the cesspool, how dare you hit my grandson! I'll kill you!" Zhang Cuihua was furious at the sight and immediately let go to grab Wang Huiting.
Seeing this, Li Mei, who had previously only dodged and dared not fight back, quickly grabbed Zhang Cuihua and held her tightly.
Zhang Cuihua was so choked she could barely breathe. She hit Li Mei with one hand while simultaneously trying to slap Wang Huiting with the other. When her arms weren't long enough, she switched to kicking with her legs.
Tong Guangyao is also ten years old this year, and he is not one to stand there and let others hit him. After realizing what was happening, he also punched and kicked Wang Huiting.
The scene was too chaotic, and the place was small and disorganized. Tong Guangyao was acting recklessly and would kick Li Mei and Zhang Cuihua from time to time.
The living room is so small, and with a bed in it, it's already crowded with just four people standing there. Now they're all fighting and a chicken is flying around the house. It's a complete mess. The neighbors who are watching want to help but don't know how to squeeze in and pull the people apart.
Before they could pull the people apart, a small cannonball suddenly rushed in. Before anyone could react, the small cannonball opened its mouth and bit Zhang Cuihua's buttocks.
Zhang Cuihua screamed in alarm.
"Our family lives in the last room on the third floor."
Wang Huizhen pointed upwards, introducing it to Su Ruyi.
"My mom was going to come pick you up, but she didn't know when you'd arrive, so she stayed home to prepare food..."
Before she could finish speaking, a chicken fell from the sky and landed with a thud right in front of Su Ruyi.
The chicken fell from the third floor. If it hadn't been able to fly and flapped its wings in the air, it would probably be a pile of dead flesh by now.
He was just momentarily stunned, then got up from the ground and wandered around unsteadily.
Throwing chickens from a high-rise building—who are they trying to kill?!
One hour ago.
Su Ruyi got off the car and walked to the exit, where she saw someone holding up a sign with her name on it.
She walked in that direction and, upon getting closer, saw a girl who looked about seventeen or eighteen years old.
Su Ruyi had a rough idea that the girl was Wang Huizhen, her stepsister who was less than three months younger than her.
Over the years, Tong Aihua not only sent money home, but also corresponded with Su Ruyi. Her mother, Su Ying, was also very open about her father's situation, so Su Ruyi had a general understanding of the situation there.
Su Ying and Tong Aihua divorced amicably, so there was no resentment between them.
When the two divorced, they agreed that if Su Ruyi didn't get into university after graduating from high school, she would go to Tong Aihua's place and he would make arrangements to ensure that Su Ruyi could stay and live in the city.
Su Ying told Su Ruyi that her father had not abandoned her, but left in order to forge a broader path for himself.
"Hello, I am Su Ruyi, and my mother is Su Ying. May I ask who you are?"
Wang Huizhen looked at the poised and confident Su Ruyi, a hint of surprise flashing in her eyes.
This was so different from what she had imagined.
Su Ruyi didn't seem like someone from the countryside at all; she looked like an ancient lady who had stepped out of a painting.
Slender and delicate, with fair skin and curved eyebrows and eyes.
Just as Tong Aihua explained the situation here to Su Ruyi, Tong Aihua also told his wife and three daughters about the situation on Su Ruyi's side, but it didn't match up at all.
"Hello, I am Wang Huizhen, and my mother is Li Mei."
Wang Huizhen realized what was happening and quickly stepped forward to help with the luggage.
Su Ruyi shook her head and smiled, "It's alright, I can take it myself. You lead the way."
Wang Huizhen wanted to insist, as the two bags were too big and must be quite heavy.
But worried that Su Ruyi might misunderstand, he confirmed it again, and when he received a negative answer, he didn't insist.
Wang Huizhen was very nervous, unsure of what to say to Su Ruyi. The eloquent Wang Huiting had slipped away early that morning, leaving Wang Huizhen feeling somewhat lost and helpless.
She was never good at dealing with people, and Su Ruyi was completely different from what she had imagined, so she was even more at a loss for words.
However, the two didn't have much of a chance to chat along the way. The bus was crowded, and although they were initially sitting side by side, they soon found themselves at opposite ends of the bus.
Little did Wang Huizhen know that just as she was about to arrive home, this unexpected incident occurred, just when she thought she was about to be free.
Su Ruyi looked up and glanced at the spot where the chicken had landed, which was exactly where Wang Huizhen had just pointed.
"This wasn't prepared for me, was it?"
Before Wang Huizhen could react, her neighbor on the first floor called out to her.
"Oh dear, Huizhen, you're finally back! Your grandma and your mom are fighting!"
"ah?!"
Wang Huizhen hurriedly ran towards the stairs, but was blocked by Su Ruyi.
"This chicken should belong to our family. Go and bring it back."
Wang Huizhen remembered that her mother had indeed said this morning that she was going to buy a chicken. It was Su Ruyi's first time visiting, and her stepfather was gone, so she had to treat her well.
Wang Huizhen quickly turned back to hug the chicken, but by the time she came to her senses, Su Ruyi was already gone.
As soon as Su Ruyi walked to the third floor, she attracted the attention of many people.
The corridor was not wide, and with a stove placed inside, it would be completely blocked if people stood on it.
"Excuse me, please." Su Ruyi, carrying two large bags, bumped into them as she passed.
She didn't do it on purpose. Although everyone had made way for her, the space was small and her bag was big, so it was inevitable that she would bump into people.
"This girl looks unfamiliar."
"Judging from this, could she be Accountant Tong's ex-wife's child?"
Someone asked directly, "Young lady, are you the daughter of Accountant Tong?"
"Yes, Tong Aihua is my dad."
The man clapped his hands: "I knew it! You look just like your dad. Look how good you are! Your dad would be so happy to see you."
"What a poor child. Why is God so blind?"
“Your family is in a lot of trouble right now. If your dad were still here, things wouldn’t have turned out like this.”
Su Ruyi simply nodded at them as a greeting.
Whether these people are genuinely concerned or have ulterior motives, she doesn't want to bring them up at this time.
"Hey, stop fighting! Can't you talk things out? What kind of behavior is this?!"
"Tong Yunyun, you should let go right now, that's your grandma."
People living in corner units usually do this. Once it's enclosed, it's their own territory. They can put things in the corridor without having to put away the oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, pots, and pans after cooking, unlike people living in middle units.
Everyone was watching the commotion from outside the door. Two middle-aged women were trying to break up the fight at the door. Inside, it was chaotic, and the two women kept going in and out.
Su Ruyi placed her luggage by the partition door and walked in empty-handed: "I'll do it."
Before the two people at the door could react, Su Ruyi went inside.
"Hey, don't go in and make things worse..."
Before she could finish speaking, Su Ruyi lifted Zhang Cuihua up with one hand. Zhang Cuihua was still clinging to two people: one was hugging the old lady, and the other, despite being bruised and battered, was still biting her buttocks tightly.
Even so, they were still lifted up.
Li Mei quickly let go, and upon seeing Su Ruyi, she knew who she was and felt embarrassed.
Zhang Cuihua screamed even louder. Her buttocks were still being bitten, and with Tong Yunyun's weight, lifting her up like this felt like her flesh was being bitten off!
Su Ruyi glanced at the little girl with her hair shaved into a buzz cut and knew that this was Tong Yunyun, the daughter of her father and stepmother.
"Tong Yunyun, let go! Aren't you disgusting? You bite everything. The chickens at home are gone, what are you still doing here?"
Upon hearing this, Tong Yunyun immediately relented. Her mouth was gushing blood, which looked particularly terrifying. She spat it out onto the ground, and two teeth fell out.
She didn't care at all and went looking for chickens everywhere.
Su Ruyi frowned when she saw the pool of blood on the ground, but she didn't have time to pay attention to it. Instead, she picked up the chubby boy who was fighting back. Because he was interrupted, he not only failed to kick anyone, but was also slapped by Wang Huiting, making him howl even louder.
The chubby boy kept kicking his legs, trying to break free, but Su Ruyi's hand remained steady, without affecting him at all.
Seeing them struggling so fiercely, he tossed them up and caught them, startling them so much that they immediately quieted down.
Su Ruyi carried the two people high up, so that neither of them could touch the ground and they were completely suspended in the air, as easily as holding a badminton racket.
She walked to the door, and the two people who were trying to break up the fight didn't dare to stop her or say anything. They simply let her pass.
As they passed through the doorway, the old man and the child bumped their heads on the door frame.
Su Ruyi walked to the door and gently tossed the two of them outside, sending them flying seven or eight meters away.
There were several men around, so the two of them didn't fall to the ground but were caught.
Everyone was stunned. What kind of strength was that? Even throwing a handful of vegetables wouldn't be this easy.
Su Ruyi clapped her hands, her face beaming with a smile as warm as a spring breeze:
"I'm here, don't cause trouble. Otherwise, I'll beat you up."
