Chapter 134 The Boss Called

Chapter 134 The Boss Called

Bai Lu carried a shopping basket and went to the market to buy vegetables.

Before leaving, she asked Xiao Wei if he wanted to come along. In the past few days, the little guy had suddenly changed a lot. Whenever he had free time, he would go grocery shopping with her and help her carry the shopping basket.

But today, he refused without hesitation.

Bai Lu looked in surprise toward the main house from which the sound was coming from.

The little figure sat upright at the octagonal table, doing homework. Opposite the octagonal table was a high table with a new white telephone on it. The little figure would look up at the white telephone every now and then after doing homework for a while.

They were afraid of missing any major events.

When Bailu returned from grocery shopping, nothing had changed.

After washing the vegetables and returning to the kitchen, the little figure remained motionless, like a sculpture carved on the octagonal table.

Is it because there's too much homework, or the phone is too attractive, or is it because I miss Xiao Cheng too much?

But Xiao Cheng often didn't come home before... Could it be that there's something extremely urgent that you want to tell Xiao Cheng?

Unable to figure it out, Bai Lu went back to the kitchen to chop vegetables. Just as she finished chopping, Xiao Wei came in.

Without saying a word, he sat down in front of the stove and started a fire.

She instantly reverts to her usual diligent self.

Bai Lu looked him up and down and asked softly, "Were you bullied at school?"

Xiao Wei shook his head: "No."

Bai Lu thought about it and realized it made sense. Everyone knows his brother is Xiao Cheng, so who would be so foolish as to ask for a beating?

"Do you have something important to tell your brother?" Bai Lu asked, her curiosity piqued as she cooked.

Xiao Wei said with a serious expression, "A man has entered the house."

Bai Lu: "..."

I poured a whole spoonful of salt into the pot.

Goodness, let's all eat some salted fish together!

"They're here to install a telephone."

"He is a man."

"It was your brother who asked them to install the phone."

"So I'm going to tell my older brother that the phone is installed." The bald boy looked serious and earnest.

Bai Lu suspected that his words were a complaint.

Sure enough, the suspicion was confirmed that night.

"Ring ring—"

As night deepened, Bailu was wringing out the last piece of freshly washed clothing by the well in the front yard. A clear and melodious bell rang from the main house, piercing the darkness and touching the heart.

Xiao Wei, who had finished showering and washing and drying his clothes first, rushed out in a panic, as if his eyebrows were on fire.

"Sister-in-law, is the phone ringing?"

Bai Lu was both amused and exasperated: "Yeah, it was so loud, couldn't you hear me?"

Xiao Wei touched his bald head helplessly, then clutched his clothes tightly, his voice filled with barely suppressed excitement: "Did my older brother call?"

"That's right, only your brother knows the home phone number. Who else could it be but your brother?"

Bai Lu carried the clothes in the bucket to the corridor to hang them out to dry: "Go answer the phone and hear your brother's voice on the phone. Does it sound the same as when he's at home?"

Xiao Wei turned around quickly, but turned back as soon as he took a step: "So what should I say first?"

"Hmm..." Bai Lu thought for a moment, holding the clothes pole, and chuckled, "Let's say hello first."

The little guy nodded and immediately ran back.

The phone rang incessantly, its incessant ringing seeming to highlight how anxious the person on the other end was.

Just as her little hand was about to touch the long white receiver, the phone suddenly stopped ringing.

The little figure stood frozen in place as if struck by lightning, her face filled with confusion and extreme nervousness.

Is it because the older brother has been waiting too long and is getting impatient?

The little figure followed closely behind, returning to the corridor to find Bai Lu, head down as if she had done something wrong: "The phone isn't ringing anymore, my brother must be angry."

"No, that's not it." Bai Lu patted the little guy's shoulder comfortingly: "Phone calls also have rest periods. They will automatically end after ringing a few times if no one answers. They will only ring again when the person who needs to make the call dials again. It's not that the call was hung up on, nor is it that your brother doesn't want to make the call."

"Really?"

Xiao Wei looked up, and his eyes slowly regained their light.

Bailu knows a lot of things, what Bailu says is never wrong, and what Bailu says is definitely right.

Bai Lu nodded under the little guy's expectant gaze: "Really, you should go back to the table and wait. Otherwise, when your brother calls and no one answers, he'll think no one's home and that we're all busy. He'll call back much later..."

The words had barely left his mouth.

The sound came from the main house again.

"Ring ring—"

Bai Lu's words indeed came true.

Xiao Wei shuddered, whether from nervousness or excitement, and stood there motionless.

Bai Lu nudged his small shoulder: "Go on."

The small figure flew back to the main house in a flash.

A small hand quickly grabbed the white telephone receiver and placed it next to the bare little ear.

There was no sound.

Xiao Wei's mind went blank. He stood stiffly in front of the high table, gripping the receiver tightly, having completely forgotten what he wanted to say.

Until, from the other end of the phone, a deep, magnetic voice said, "Hello..."

The familiar voice suddenly entered my ears, instantly waking my excited, tense little head.

"Hello!"

I finally remembered the greetings taught by Bailu.

Xiao Wei listened to the man's voice on the phone, his heart and eyes filled with joy.

His older brother called him!

This is the first time my older brother has called him!

"What about White Dew?"

A basin of cold water was poured over Xiao Wei from head to toe, chilling him to the bone, from his ears to his heels.

Feeling deflated and speechless, I had no choice but to reply, "I'm hanging up the laundry."

There was a sudden silence on the other end of the phone.

A moment of silence fell over both ends of the phone.

After some time, the receiver picked up again: "Is it done drying?"

Xiao Wei: "..."

"not yet."

Another long silence followed.

Xiao Wei looked back and saw that Bai Lu hadn't finished hanging up the clothes yet. Her hand, which wasn't holding the phone, gripped the edge of the table tightly, while her other small hand gripped the phone tightly, squeezing it again and again.

"A man came to our house today."

A man's voice immediately came through the silent receiver: "Who is it?"

"The person who installs telephones."

Xiao Cheng: "..."

After another silence, Xiao Wei paused and continued, "When I came home from school this afternoon, I overheard the neighbors talking about how our chestnuts have found a new market. It's a couple who came to pick them up in their tricycle this morning."

Xiao Cheng didn't hesitate to give a single word: "Oh."

Xiao Wei really wanted to continue the conversation, but he couldn't find any topics to talk about and was feeling awkward: "I'll go check if my sister-in-law has hung up the clothes yet."

"Um."

They left no one behind.

The little bald boy covered his sad face and ran away.

"Sister-in-law! Sister-in-law!"

Bai Lu had just finished hanging up the clothes and put the bucket back in the bathroom when a small figure rushed out beside her.

The little figure raised its bald head, its big eyes filled with a hint of resentment, and pursed its lips, saying, "Big brother wants you to answer the phone."

Bai Lu looked puzzled: "I don't have anything to say. You can talk to him. Didn't you want to talk to your brother just now? Why didn't you talk to him a little longer?"

Xiao Wei's eyes became even more resentful: "I'm done talking, you go talk to your older brother."
