Chapter Fourteen: My Sister-in-Law is Good

Xiao Cheng seemed to sense the intense gaze directed at him from afar. He turned his head and glanced at her, his gaze passing through the bustling crowd and settling on that slender and delicate figure.

Bai Lu, her face filled with undisguised shock and excitement, gave him a thumbs up—Awesome!

Xiao Cheng's lips curled up almost imperceptibly, and he arrogantly withdrew his gaze to continue operating.

After watching for a while, Bai Lu went out to buy groceries.

I don't know if meals are provided when building a house, so it's better to buy the groceries in advance and have them ready.

The boss has worked so hard and made great contributions; he can't go hungry.

After Xiao Cheng leveled the mud-brick house, he shoveled the useless bricks onto a six-wheeled truck that had been arranged beforehand and had it hauled away. The remaining wooden beams of the roof were left for the homeowner to use as firewood, a decision that had been made in the morning.

Wen Xiuyun and Zhou Zhonghua are new residents who moved here from a remote mountainous area and are not very familiar with the local customs.

They did whatever Xiao Cheng said.

He was entrusted with handling everything from demolishing and rebuilding houses, hiring trucks to transport bricks, and purchasing steel bars, cement, and red bricks.

I had a very pleasant conversation with Bai Lu yesterday. I could feel her sincerity. Wen Xiuyun trusts this young couple.

After Xiao Cheng laid out the ground line, Luo Shiliu, Xiao Dazhuang, and the others began to dig the foundation.

There were two senior workers and one junior worker in the team, all of whom were people they knew well.

They were all good at their jobs. Following Xiao Cheng, they learned a little bit of everything he was good at.

Besides operating excavators.

They really don't have the talent to apply what they've learned.

When Bailu returned from grocery shopping, a group of younger brothers cheered and shouted in unison, "Hello, sister-in-law!"

Bai Lu paused, her face burning red, and she replied awkwardly but politely, "Hello, everyone."

Xiao Cheng watched the girl's hurried departure, his thin lips slightly pursed, and threw a shovelful of mud at Luo Shiliu.

"What are you yelling about?"

Luo Shiliu was the one who started the commotion the loudest. While dodging, he smiled with a roguish air: "Ouch—I'm going to be buried! I was wrong, brother. Next time, I won't lead the shouting to scare your sister-in-law. I should give you this chance."

Before he could finish speaking, another shovelful of mud came.

Wang Hao and the others were all laughing.

Only Xiao Dazhuang said seriously, "Sixteen, you're wrong. Even if Brother Cheng takes the lead, he shouldn't call her sister-in-law. Sister-in-law and Brother Cheng are husband and wife, but they're not from the same generation. How can he call her sister-in-law?"

Luo Shiliu almost burst out laughing: "You're right! If you don't call her sister-in-law, ask Brother Cheng what you should call her."

Honest people are easily fooled.

Xiao Dazhuang stared at Xiao Cheng with an eager expression, only to receive a cold glare in return.

And two chilly words: "Work".

Luo Shiliu suppressed a laugh and patted Xiao Dazhuang's shoulder twice to comfort him: "Don't worry, you'll know when you get married. Brother Cheng doesn't say anything because his wife is shy."

Xiao Dazhuang didn't even have a girlfriend, let alone a wife, and nodded as if he understood.

"Oh, I see. No wonder your wife blushed just now." He told the truth.

As a result, he got a shovelful of mud.

Luo Shiliu had long since run far away, squatting on the ground laughing uncontrollably, even laughing so hard that he knocked his shovel away.

Xiao Cheng delivered a cold, sarcastic remark: "If you don't finish digging the foundation today, you'll be working overtime tonight with a lantern."

"Brother, no, no, no! I was wrong, I won't do it again, I'll never do it again!"

"I'll get to work right away, roll up my sleeves and get to work!"

Bai Lu bought a prepared chicken, shiitake mushrooms, three eggplants, a piece of pork with alternating layers of fat and lean meat, and a bunch of watercress, spending a total of twenty-one yuan and eighty cents.

As Bailu was washing watercress in the basin in the yard, her neighbor Wang Cuihua came over: "Bailu, may I come in?"

The courtyard gate was not closed.

When Bai Lu heard the sound and looked over, she had already come in.

She even came over to help wash the vegetables, very familiarly, but Bai Lu said no, and she pretended not to hear her.

"You're pregnant, how can you always squat down to do things? It must be very tiring. Go get a stool and sit down. I'll wash these vegetables, it'll be quick."

Bai Lu: "..."

I can roughly guess why she came.

Seeing that Bai Lu didn't move, Wang Cuihua very attentively went to fetch a small stool for her to sit on.

"Liu Guanggun finally moved out, all thanks to Xiao Cheng. Now a wealthy family has moved in next door and they're going to build a small red brick house. I never expected Xiao Cheng could operate an excavator, he's really amazing." She started talking to herself.

With a face full of admiration, she washed the vegetables diligently and thoroughly, making sure they were spotless, and even the White Dew season wouldn't shoo her away.

Wang Cuihua rambled on for a long time, telling Bai Lu how she met Abiao, how they got to know each other, how they fell in love, got married, and eventually became a widow.

She was so grateful for Xiao Cheng's help that she almost said she wanted to repay him with her body.

Bai Lu just smiled and didn't say anything.

Seeing that she didn't react as expected, Wang Cuihua could only change the subject: "Liu Guanggun's old house is dilapidated, and the kitchen is unusable. I think Xiao Cheng razed it today too, probably because he's going home for dinner."

"Have you bought enough groceries?" she asked.

Bai Lu said, "I bought it."

Wang Cuihua thought she was referring to watercress and shook her head in disagreement: "How can this little bit of greens be enough? Didn't you buy any meat? Xiao Cheng and the others work very hard and need to eat meat."

"I bought them all." Bai Lu knew, of course, that she needed to eat meat; otherwise, she wouldn't have the energy to work.

“You must be very tired cooking by yourself. Why don’t I help you?” Wang Cuihua offered to help without even asking what she had bought.

She was indeed a little scared when she saw Xiao Cheng last night. A Biao had told her about it before, but words could never compare to the shock of seeing it with her own eyes.

But then I thought about it again, and realized that's how they do things, since they won't fight their own people anyway.

What is she afraid of? There is nothing to be afraid of at all.

Xiao Cheng is so handsome and treats her so well; he is someone she can entrust her life to.

"No need, thank you. There aren't many dishes, I can cook them myself," Bai Lu politely declined.

Wang Cuihua had heard about Bai Lu from other neighbors. She thought she was a timid, cowardly, and indecisive little girl. She believed that if she talked to her a few more times, Bai Lu would definitely agree.

"Why are you being so polite with me? Xiao Cheng helped me, so I'm helping you. Isn't it just what I should do?"

"Besides, I'm a woman and I can't eat that much. I'm usually full after just two bowls of rice."

Although Bai Lu thought the free nanny was nice, she only thought she was nice; she didn't actually have to come inside.

She doesn't like melodramatic backyard drama.

So we need to nip it in the bud. "Thank you for your kindness, but Xiao Cheng said he really likes the food I cook, and he can't eat anything cooked by others."

Wang Cuihua didn't expect Bai Lu to be so direct, and a lot of words she was about to say were choked back down her throat.

She gave an awkward laugh, but still wouldn't give up, and said, "I can also help you with other things, like doing laundry. It's inconvenient for you to be pregnant, so I'll move in and take care of you until you give birth and finish your postpartum period. Wouldn't that be great?"
